Journey of the Scholar

Chapter 127: Chapter 126: Cult: Demon Summoning?

As Ruchir and his instructor were about to head back to continue the ghost investigation, they heard some familiar voices approaching. It was Garret and Robert, who were hurrying towards them with a mix of determination and nervousness.

"Ruchir! Wait up!" Garret called out, waving his hand energetically.

Ruchir raised an eyebrow, surprised to see them. "Garret? Robert? What are you two doing here?"

Robert, catching his breath, straightened up and replied, "We're here to help, obviously. Can't let you have all the glory, can we?"

Garret nodded enthusiastically. "Yeah, and we figured it's time we prove ourselves, especially after... well, you know, the last incident."

Professor Aanya, eyeing the two with a bemused expression, couldn't resist a playful jab. "Prove yourselves, huh? You mean like how you almost proved yourselves in that brawl yesterday? Impressive, truly."

Garret's face flushed with embarrassment as Robert snickered. "C'mon, Professor, give us a break! We're serious this time."

Professor Aanya chuckled and shrugged. "Alright, alright. Just don't trip over your own feet."

Robert, trying to hide his amusement, nudged Garret. "You better not trip, Garret. We all know you're the clumsy one."

Garret shot him a glare. "Says the guy who almost knocked over a vendor's cart last week."

Ruchir couldn't help but smile at the exchange. Despite their usual antics, there was a certain charm to their friendship. "Alright, if you're going to help, just remember to stay focused. This isn't just some small-time case; we're dealing with something serious."

Garret puffed out his chest. "No worries, Ruchir! We'll be as serious as a—" He was cut off as he stumbled over a loose stone, barely catching himself before falling.

Robert burst out laughing. "As serious as a what, Garret? A toddler learning to walk?"

Professor Aanya shook her head, smiling. "And here I thought this would be a dull investigation."

As they made their way back to the site where the ghost was last seen, the mood was a mix of tension and light-hearted banter. Garret, always the chatterbox, couldn't help but ask, "So, Ruchir, what's the plan? Are we going to set a trap or something? Maybe lure the ghost out with some bait?"

Professor Aanya, not missing a beat, teased, "You volunteering as bait, Garret?"

Garret's eyes widened. "W-What? No! I mean... maybe?" He looked around nervously. "I was just asking, you know."

Robert patted him on the back, grinning. "Relax, Garret. I'm sure Ruchir has a better plan than using you as ghost bait."

Ruchir, suppressing a laugh, said, "Let's just focus on gathering more information for now. The ghost seems to be tied to that woman's story, so we'll need to look into that more deeply."

As they arrived at the location, the air seemed colder, and a sense of unease crept over them. Garret shivered, trying to shake off the feeling. "Is it just me, or does this place give off some serious bad vibes?"

Professor Aanya, more serious now, nodded. "It's not just you. Keep your wits about you."

Just as they began their investigation, Garret and Robert stumbled upon something unusual—a hidden talisman buried under a pile of rocks. Robert picked it up, examining it closely. "Hey, Ruchir, check this out. This doesn't look like it belongs here."

Ruchir took the talisman from him, his eyes narrowing as he studied it. "This... this could be a clue. Good work, you two."

Garret beamed with pride. "See? We're not just here for comic relief. We're useful too!"

Professor Aanya smirked. "Don't get too cocky now. We still have a lot to figure out."

As they continued their investigation, Garret couldn't help but throw in a joke here and there, much to Robert's amusement and Professor Aanya's mock annoyance.

But despite the light-hearted moments, they all knew that they were treading on dangerous ground. The ghost was real, and they would need more than just jokes and luck to deal with it.

Finally, as they wrapped up their search for the day, Professor Aanya clapped Garret on the shoulder. "You did good today, Garret. Just... try not to trip over any more stones, alright?"

Garret grinned sheepishly. "No promises, Professor. No promises."

Ruchir and Professor Aanya, along with Garret and Robert, continued their investigation into the mysterious ghost haunting the capital.

The more they dug into the matter, the more unsettling the clues became.

It was late in the evening when they found themselves in an old, abandoned part of the city—a place where the shadows seemed to stretch unnaturally long, and the air was thick with an eerie silence.

Ruchir knelt down, examining a series of strange symbols carved into the ground. His brows furrowed as he tried to decipher their meaning.

The symbols were unfamiliar, nothing like the usual array of cultivation techniques or protective runes he was accustomed to seeing.

Professor Aanya stood beside him, arms crossed. "These markings... they're not just for show. Someone—or something—put a lot of power into these."

Ruchir nodded, his voice thoughtful. "I've seen these symbols before, but I can't place where. They're older than anything we typically encounter in the capital. They might even predate the empire itself."

Garret and Robert, who had been keeping a watchful eye on their surroundings, exchanged uneasy glances. Garret, unable to contain his curiosity, asked, "So, what do you think these symbols do? Are they connected to that ghost?"

Robert added, his voice low, "Or worse, what if they're calling something even more dangerous?"

Professor Aanya sighed, the weight of her experience evident in her tone. "It's not far-fetched. These symbols... they have the air of a dark ritual. Whoever did this isn't just playing with ghosts—they're trying to accomplish something far more sinister."

Ruchir's eyes widened as a thought struck him. "A ritual... what if this ghost isn't just a spirit, but the byproduct of something much larger? We might be dealing with a cult."

Professor Aanya's expression darkened. "A cult in the capital? That would explain the secrecy and the deliberate effort to cover their tracks. If that's the case, we're in far more danger than we initially thought."

Garret gulped audibly. "A cult? That's... not good. Like, really not good."

Robert, trying to maintain his composure, said, "But why a ghost? What's the purpose?"

Ruchir rose to his feet, his mind racing. "A ghost could be a byproduct, or maybe a test. If they're performing rituals, they could be trying to weaken the boundaries between our world and the spirit realm. Or worse—what if they're trying to summon something? Something that's not just a ghost."

Professor Aanya's eyes narrowed. "A demon."

The word hung in the air like a death sentence. The very thought of a demon being summoned within the heart of the empire was enough to send chills down their spines.

Garret looked like he was about to faint. "A d-d-demon? Here? Now?"

Robert, trying to lighten the mood despite the fear gnawing at his insides, quipped, "Well, at least we know why things have been so weird lately."

Professor Aanya ignored Robert's attempt at humor, her focus on the task ahead. "If they're trying to summon a demon, they'll need a lot of power—and they'll need to be close to something of great significance. A noble family, a place of power... something that holds sway in the capital."

Ruchir's mind raced as he considered the possibilities. "But we haven't uncovered any specific targets yet. If we could find out who or what they're targeting, we could stop them before it's too late."

Garret, trying to be helpful, added, "Maybe we should talk to the noble families? See if any of them have noticed anything strange?"

Robert, for once taking the situation seriously, said, "Or we could look into places of power—shrines, ancient sites, anything that might attract a cult's attention."

Ruchir nodded. "We need to move quickly. If they're already this far along in their plans, we don't have much time."

As they discussed their next steps, a sudden chill filled the air, and the faint sound of chanting reached their ears. It was coming from deeper within the abandoned district, where the shadows seemed to pulse with an unnatural energy.

Professor Aanya's eyes sharpened. "We're not alone. They're here."

Ruchir tightened his grip on his weapon. "Then we confront them now, before they can complete whatever they're doing."

Garret and Robert exchanged nervous glances but nodded. Despite their fear, they knew this was their chance to prove themselves.

The group moved cautiously through the deserted streets, following the sound of the chanting. The further they went, the louder it became, until they reached the entrance to an ancient, forgotten temple hidden in the heart of the district.

The temple's doors were slightly ajar, and the light of flickering torches cast eerie shadows across the cracked stone walls. Ruchir peered inside, his heart pounding as he took in the scene before him.

A group of robed figures stood in a circle, chanting in a language none of them recognized. In the center of the circle, a large, ornate bowl filled with a dark, viscous liquid bubbled ominously. The air around them crackled with dark energy, and the presence of something malevolent was almost tangible.

Ruchir gestured for the others to stay back as he crept closer, trying to catch a glimpse of what the cultists were doing. His blood ran cold as he realized they were in the final stages of their ritual. The dark liquid in the bowl was not just a prop—it was a medium, a connection to whatever they were trying to summon.

Professor Aanya joined him, her expression grim. "This is worse than we thought. They're not just summoning a demon—they're binding it to this plane. If they succeed, it'll be unstoppable."

Ruchir's mind raced as he tried to think of a way to disrupt the ritual without getting them all killed. "We need to stop them now, before it's too late."

Garret, who had been trying to stay calm, whispered, "But how? There's so many of them, and they're using some serious dark magic."

Robert, his voice barely above a whisper, added, "We need to find the leader—the one in charge. If we can take them out, the ritual might collapse."

Ruchir nodded. "Right. We'll target the leader. Garret, Robert, you two create a distraction—make as much noise as you can. Professor Aanya and I will take out the leader and disrupt the ritual."

Garret and Robert exchanged nervous glances but nodded, their resolve firm. "Got it. Just don't let us get turned into demon fodder."

As they prepared to launch their attack, Professor Aanya placed a hand on Ruchir's shoulder. "This isn't going to be easy. Stay focused, and don't hesitate. The fate of the capital might depend on what we do here tonight."

Ruchir took a deep breath, steeling himself for what was to come. "I won't let the empire fall to darkness. Not today."

With that, they sprang into action, hoping against hope that they weren't too late to stop the cult's dark ambitions.
