Chapter 36: An Indirect Kiss
"Alright, time's up. Gather all your books and English notes at the front," Lin Rouxi instructed firmly, her sharp gaze scanning the classroom.
One of the students stepped forward to collect the books, stacking them neatly on the teacher's desk. Once everything was in order, Lin Rouxi handed out the exam question papers to the students.
"You have one hour to complete this test. When time is up, submit your papers—finished or not. If you complete it early, you may turn it in before the deadline. And remember, any form of cheating will be met with strict punishment," she announced in a no-nonsense tone.
Checking the time on her wristwatch, she gave the signal, "You may begin."
The room fell into an intense silence as the students hunched over their desks, scribbling away. Ye Chen glanced at the paper and smirked. Too easy.
Without hesitation, he started answering the questions, his hand moving swiftly across the paper. In just ten minutes, he was done. He reviewed his answers briefly, nodded to himself, and stood up.
The sound of his chair scraping against the floor drew everyone's attention. Murmurs filled the room as Ye Chen walked confidently to the front and placed his paper on the teacher's desk before returning to his seat.
Lin Rouxi glanced at her watch, frowning. "Ye Chen, are you sure you want to submit it now? You still have fifty minutes left. You might want to check your answers."
Ye Chen smiled. "I'm confident, Teacher Lin. There's no need to double-check."
His nonchalant attitude left the class stunned. Many exchanged pitiful glances, convinced he had just sealed his fate with a failing grade.
Zhao Yanyan, seated beside him, leaned in with concern. "Ye Chen, why were you in such a hurry? Are you absolutely sure about your answers?"
Ye Chen chuckled, tilting his head playfully. "Relax, Yanyan. I'm sure. Besides, if I score well, don't I deserve a reward?" His tone was teasing, his gaze warm.
Zhao Yanyan's cheeks turned a shade of pink. "Hmph, let's see first. If you fail, you're on your own!" She quickly turned back to her paper, avoiding his amused gaze.
Bored of waiting, Ye Chen leaned back in his chair and closed his eyes, appearing to doze off while discreetly absorbing the faint Yin energy emanating from Zhao Yanyan beside him.
Lin Rouxi, curious, picked up his test paper and skimmed through it. With each answer she read, her eyebrows rose higher in astonishment. Perfect… every single answer is correct.
She had been teaching for years, and never once had a student aced her test—especially not in this class. Looking over at Ye Chen, who was sleeping peacefully, she shook her head, a small smile playing on her lips. Just what kind of student is he?
When the hour ended, Lin Rouxi collected all the answer sheets and began grading them immediately. The students, far from eager, slouched in their seats, already anticipating bad results.
Fifteen minutes later, she began announcing scores. The results were as expected—low.
"30… 41… 35… 51… 47… 39…"
The class groaned collectively, disheartened. Even the best among them barely touched 60.
"Zhao Yanyan, 90. Well done."
The boys cheered. "As expected of our class goddess!"
"Yeah, without Yanyan, our class would be hopeless."
Zhao Yanyan blushed at the attention but kept her focus on Lin Rouxi, anxiously waiting for Ye Chen's score.
Lin Rouxi hesitated for a moment before finally announcing, "Ye Chen… 100."
The room fell into stunned silence.
"What?! That can't be right!"
"Teacher, maybe he cheated!"
"Yeah, how could someone finish in ten minutes and get a perfect score?!"
The protests grew louder, particularly from the male students who couldn't accept Ye Chen's feat.
The female students, however, had different reactions. Their eyes sparkled as they gazed at him with admiration. A smart and handsome man? What more could they ask for?
Lin Rouxi silenced the class with a sharp slam of her ruler against the desk. "Quiet! Do any of you truly believe someone could cheat an entire test in ten minutes? If so, I'd like to see you try next time."
That shut them up. Even the most skeptical students begrudgingly accepted the result, though one person still burned with resentment—Sen Tu, who clenched his fists tightly, his hatred for Ye Chen intensifying.
Lin Rouxi sighed. "Class dismissed. Those who scored below 50, you will complete exercises 50–60 and submit them tomorrow. If you fail to do so, you won't be allowed into class."
Groans erupted across the room, especially from the students who had barely managed to scrape by.
As the students packed up, Ye Chen turned to Zhao Yanyan with a cheeky grin. "So, about my reward…?"
Her face turned scarlet. "Not here! I'll… I'll give it to you later."
"Later? Where?" Ye Chen teased, leaning in slightly.
"Ugh, just follow me to the school's back garden, alright?" she huffed, clearly flustered.
Ye Chen smirked, his mind wandering into questionable territory. Maybe she'll finally…
Just as he was about to leave with her, Lin Rouxi's voice called out, "Ye Chen, come with me to my office."
He groaned inwardly. Great timing, Teach…
Zhao Yanyan giggled. "I'll wait for you in the garden. Don't take too long."
Ye Chen followed Lin Rouxi reluctantly, knowing his plans for the evening had been delayed.
Upon arriving at her private office, Lin Rouxi walked over to her desk and pulled out two neatly packed lunch boxes. She placed them in front of Ye Chen.
"Since you cured my illness, I promised you a treat. I made these myself. They're much healthier than the cafeteria's food," she said, her voice carrying a slight nervousness.
Ye Chen, unfazed, took one of the boxes and opened it. The presentation was flawless—perfectly arranged vegetables, tomatoes, meat, and eggs. It looked mouthwatering.
He took a bite. His eyes widened. "Wow, this is amazing! Way better than anything I've had before."
Lin Rouxi, watching his reaction, felt an odd sense of satisfaction. She had expected him to be polite about it, but his genuine delight made her heart flutter.
They ate in a comfortable silence, though Ye Chen devoured his portion far quicker than she had anticipated. She shook her head, amused by his appetite.
Once finished, Ye Chen stood up. "Thanks for the meal, Teacher Lin. I have to go now—someone's waiting for me."
As he left, Lin Rouxi absentmindedly reached for her tea and took a sip. She placed the cup down and blinked.
Her face turned crimson.
"Ahhh!" she squealed, realizing she had just drunk from Ye Chen's cup. I just had an indirect kiss with my student!
Her heart pounded in her chest, her mind spinning wildly.
Meanwhile, Ye Chen, oblivious, was already making his way to the back garden, eager to see what reward Zhao Yanyan had in store for him.
