Chapter 51: Who? Who Are You Talking About?
The Strange Crow
"What the...?"
Drake Myers frowned, spotting a crow perched nearby.
It seemed utterly lifeless, too still to be a normal bird.
Where had it come from?
His system offered no alerts, leaving Drake irritated and wary.
Swift Action
Down below, Kureo Mado, Akira Mado, and Kotaro Amon had just finished clearing out a group of ghouls.
While they deliberated their next move, Drake grabbed the sword left behind by Muraoka Yutaka.
The system chimed in his ear:
"Weapon activation: 99% compatibility."
Without hesitation, Drake lunged toward the crow.
The bird didn't even react before being split cleanly in half.
As Drake descended, he used his incredible strength to control the fall, finally landing with a loud thud on the pavement.
A Suspicious Encounter
Dust settled as Drake stood, his sword buried in the concrete.
Kureo Mado and the others froze, weapons drawn, tense as they watched the mysterious figure emerge from the smoke.
Only when they recognized him did Mado lower his Quinque, though his eyes remained sharp.
"What was that?" he asked, glancing at the bloodied remains of the crow.
"It's not mechanical, nor does it feel like a kaiju," Drake muttered, inspecting his blade.
The crow had left no solid remains, only a pool of blood on the ground.
"It's... strange. Too strange to be just a regular animal," he added with a scowl.
A Brief Exchange
"What brings you here, young man?" Mado asked, his tone oddly casual.
Drake gestured toward the building above. "Just moved in. Didn't expect to meet you all again.
"And you? Why isn't the Defense Force assisting you?"
Mado's Perspective
"CCG and the Defense Force are separate entities," Mado replied coolly.
"We work together only when necessary. Besides, the Defense Force is busy handling kaiju across Yokohama.
"I don't intend to waste their resources on small fry."
Drake nodded, though he suspected there was more to the story.
The rivalry between the CCG and the Defense Force was no secret, and it was clear that Mado harbored some disdain for the latter.
A Lesson on Humanity's Strength
Mado's next words, however, caught Drake off guard.
"Young man, did you know that humans, too, have powerful fighters?
"While the Defense Force relies heavily on technology, there are warriors out there who fight on their own terms."
Drake's eyes narrowed. "What do you mean?"
Legends Among Humans
"Take Bang, for example," Mado began, his tone almost reverent.
"He runs the Bang Martial Arts Dojo here in Yokohama, though he's often in Tokyo. His specialty? The Flowing Water Rock-Smashing Fist.
"He has countless disciples, and his strength far surpasses yours.
"And yet, the Defense Force has never targeted him.
"Shinomiya Isao? Bah! Without his advanced technology, he'd be nothing!"
Drake's Shock
Drake stiffened at the name "Bang."
Could it really be him? Was the Hero Association not yet formed in this world?
"Bang isn't the only one," Mado continued. "Atomic Samurai—a master swordsman—also stands among the strongest humans.
"He has a few notable disciples as well and fights kaiju independently, relying solely on his skill and strength.
"These warriors trust their abilities over technology, which is why they haven't aligned with the Defense Force.
"Even someone like Hoshina Soshiro—skilled as he is—would pale in comparison to them."
The Invitation
Mado's eyes gleamed as he turned back to Drake.
"You have potential, young man. If you join us at the CCG, I'll personally vouch for you."
