Kaito Kid is Superhero

Chapter 79: Chapter 79: Kid vs. Captain America

"Kid! Kid! Kid!"

The night shift ditched work. The early risers stayed up late. People who were supposed to rest were too hyped to sleep.

Hundreds of Kaitou Kid's diehard fans gathered excitedly at the gates of the Gotham Museum, chanting his name.

Captain America, now geared up with his shield, finally witnessed firsthand just how blindly devoted fans could be. People idolizing a thief? Even if this phantom thief wasn't your average criminal, theft was still theft. No matter how popular he was, stealing was still against the law.

Meanwhile, watching from a tall building across the way, Batman had to admit—even he didn't expect Kid to have this many fans. Should he intervene or stay out of it? Batman hesitated. In the end, he decided to wait and see. Kid wasn't someone easy to catch. He might as well watch how Captain America would handle the situation first.

Everyone wanted to know how Kid would make his entrance tonight. Kid's appearances were always full of surprises. But this time, they were going to be disappointed.

"So disgusting." Ada Wong frowned at Liu A'dou—because he'd disguised himself as a female officer and had even entered the women's restroom.

"I'm sacrificing myself for the sake of the Kaitou Kid cause," A'dou said, trying to defend himself.

"Stop using your normal voice. It's way too jarring. Makes me want to puke," Ada said mercilessly.

Liu A'dou switched to a high-pitched feminine tone. "Better now? Keep nagging and next time I'll cosplay as you."

Ada narrowed her eyes. The message was clear: "You wouldn't dare."

Liu A'dou dragged the unconscious female officer into a stall and locked the door from inside. "Let's go. Time to head out. Don't blow our cover."

"I don't need you to tell me that." Ada had already gotten used to her role as Kid's assistant.

No one would notice their colleague had been swapped out. Liu A'dou mimicked the female officer's sharp walk and began patrolling confidently. He strolled right past Steve Rogers and continued down the hall.

He eventually reached the control room. Acting naturally, he slipped inside. Once the main power went down, emergency lights would take about five seconds to kick in. That five-second window was all he needed for his dramatic entrance.

He moved with a speed no security camera could catch, attaching a small remote-detonated charge to the circuit box. Then he left like nothing had happened. On the way in, he had already identified several distraction points where he'd plant explosives to draw police away.

His hands moved so fast the monitors didn't pick up a thing. To the guards watching the feeds, this female officer was just doing her normal rounds.

Left, right, above—explosives were now planted along his route.

Captain America stood firm beside the Silver Star, never leaving his post. He could feel the curiosity in the eyes of the surrounding officers. They were all wondering the same thing: when would Kaitou Kid show up, and how?

Even as officers, they weren't immune to curiosity.

Steve, however, disliked Kid. No matter what good he had done for Gotham, the law was the law. Breaking it couldn't be justified by heroics. He couldn't understand why Gotham had embraced a thief so much. This modern world was absurd.

Standing beside him, Ada could only think one thing—this world sure was full of weirdos. Just look at Captain America's outfit: a blue helmet, red-white-blue star-spangled spandex… It looked like something out of a children's stage play.

Ada had to admit now that she'd been wrong. She used to think Liu A'dou's white outfit and the black uniform he made for her were strange enough, but seeing Steve Rogers' attire, she realized Liu A'dou's taste was actually… pretty normal.

However, the shield in Steve's hand did catch her eye. That was no ordinary item. Even with her trained vision, she couldn't identify what it was made of.

"Ada, do you want a photo with Captain America too?" asked Commissioner Gordon, seeing her staring. He assumed she was just like the other officers, eager for a selfie.

That wasn't what Ada had in mind—but Liu A'dou certainly wouldn't miss the chance. Disguised as the female officer and walking by, he perked up at the mention. "Commissioner, really? We can take a photo with Captain America? I want one!"

"Absolutely not. At least not right now," Gordon replied, exasperated. "Don't bother Captain America while he's working."

"No worries, Commissioner," Steve said with a friendly smile. "Once we wrap things up, I'll be happy to take photos with everyone."

He had always been approachable—back in World War II, Steve started off working recruitment drives for the army. As the poster boy of the military, he'd been trained to be personable. After all, how else could he convince young Americans to enlist?

Commissioner Gordon smiled awkwardly. "That's very generous of you." In truth, he was relieved. A few of his old friends had been pestering him nonstop for autographs from Captain America. Grown men still fanboying at their age…

"No problem at all." Captain America was used to this sort of thing.

"KID! KID! KID!"

Outside, the fans were finally starting to tire. With no sign of Kid yet, many took the chance to rest. But high above, on a nearby building, Batman remained crouched in the shadows, eyes locked on Captain America, focused particularly on analyzing the shield. It was forged from a metal he'd never encountered—extremely durable, incredibly lightweight. This alloy might not even originate from Earth.

Batman didn't really care what Captain America intended to do. What mattered was whether his presence would help or harm Gotham. If it helped, Batman would support it. If not, he would stop it. Of course, he was also curious to see how a showdown between Captain America and Kaitou Kid would unfold.

It was about time. By Batman's calculations, Kid would likely make his move now. If he were in Kid's place, he'd strike at this very moment too. It had been over five hours since the warning note was discovered—people were exhausted, making it the perfect window.

And Liu A'dou had the exact same thought. So he made his move.

He pressed the remote. Boom—total power failure.

With a dull thud, the museum lights blacked out. Outside, Kid's fans instantly caught on. They knew: their idol had arrived. Inside, the police felt it even more—total darkness descended.

Then came the siren. "WOOOOO~" Someone had gotten close to the gem.

He was here. Captain America raised his shield, bracing for action.

The blackout lasted only five seconds. The museum's emergency lights powered on, and everyone turned toward the display case. There he was—Kaitou Kid, standing atop the glass case, the Silver Star already in his hand.

In just five seconds, Kid had somehow appeared from nowhere and snatched the diamond—silently, invisibly. Even Captain America was briefly stunned. How had he done it? From the instant the lights went out to the alarm sounding had been barely two seconds. Then three more seconds before the backup lights kicked in… and yet, Kid had already done it.

No choice but to admit—Kid really was a master thief. And seeing him in person, Steve Rogers could feel it. This thief didn't seem burdened by anything in the world. He floated above it all, living only to steal—untouchable, unstoppable.

"Put the gem down!" Steve finally shouted. His mission was clear—stop the thief.

"It's showtime, folks!" Kid replied. And just like that—the diamond was gone from his hand.

The audience was stunned. The gem had vanished again. Ada, seeing Liu A'dou's sleight of hand, had to admit—it was breathtaking. Small objects really did give him more room to show off.

Everyone held their breath, wondering what Kid would do next, how he'd escape.

And Kid didn't disappoint. "I press!" he said, hitting the remote.

BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! A series of explosions rocked the museum. Police ducked instinctively. These were the small, harmless explosives Liu A'dou had planted earlier. No damage—just noise.

But for Gotham's officers, the sound was all too familiar. Their muscle memory kicked in instantly.

Seeing their intense reaction, the old war veteran Steve Rogers moved as well. He brought up his shield, using it to protect Ada and Commissioner Gordon—ever the selfless hero.

And Kid took that moment to raise his grappling gun and fire into the sky, soaring upward.

No damage? No smoke or shockwaves? Steve realized he'd been tricked. He immediately sprang into action, leaping onto the reinforced glass display for leverage and launching himself upward like he had wings.

Kid, just reaching the rooftop to prepare his grand exit to the crowd, was stunned. Captain America's physical abilities were insane. Not even Bane could have pulled that off.

With the grace of a gymnast, Steve flipped onto the rooftop.

"Hey, hey, that's cheating!"

Watching all of this from afar, Batman had the same thought. Yeah, this guy really was the result of the Super Soldier Program—no longer just a man.
