Chapter 39: Chapter 39: Chidori Unleashed! Lightning vs Lightning!
A week later.
With a roar of thunder, the wind swept away the last of the clouds, and dark masses rolled across the sky like waves.
Deep within a quiet corner of the Konoha Forest, a loud rumble echoed—strikingly in sync with the thunder overhead.
"Ox–Rabbit–Monkey."
As Kakashi completed the hand seals, high-density Lightning Release chakra surged and wrapped around his right hand. The arcane lightning cracked and jumped wildly, releasing dangerously bright flashes of light.
A high-pitched screech split the air, sounding like a thousand birds screaming in unison.
Kakashi lowered his right hand, leaned forward, and burst into a high-speed dash toward a massive tree ahead of him.
Crackling with energy, the Chidori left a scorched trench in the ground as he ran.
Upon reaching the tree, he lunged—and with one fluid strike—his lightning-coated hand sliced straight through the trunk.
Squeak—BOOM!
The tree groaned, split in half, and crashed to the forest floor, kicking up a thick cloud of dust.
Kakashi retracted his chakra and, with a one-handed seal, released a C-rank Wind Style: Gale Palm, dispersing the dust with a single gust.
"Huh. Not bad," he muttered, eyeing the carbonized, smoking wound in the trunk. "Pierces clean through using high-voltage chakra and momentum. If I ever wanted to barbecue a forest, I think I've got the recipe."
After studying the Lightning Release jutsu used by the Third Raikage during the war, Kakashi had been inspired to develop something of his own.
And sure enough, using the Raikage's techniques as reference, his understanding of Lightning Release had skyrocketed.
One week later—boom—Chidori, version one, was complete.
Still, it was crude. A close-range, high-speed assassination move that relied on sprinting to maximize its damage output.
Of course, in the original timeline, it wasn't until he got the Sharingan—with its enhanced perception—that he could fully capitalize on it.
But this Kakashi had some cheat codes.
For starters, he had Mitotic Regeneration—meaning he could afford to tank a hit or two.
And with his mastery over the Lightning Armor technique, his defense was already ridiculous.
As he admired his work, a bolt of lightning suddenly split the sky and struck the ground not far in front of him.
"Oh?"
Kakashi raised an eyebrow.
With zero hesitation, he activated the Lightning Armor again. Chidori surged back to life in his right hand.
BOOM!
The sky darkened even further, the thunder more aggressive than before. Lightning danced violently along the edge of the clouds.
Another bolt cracked through the air—aimed straight at Kakashi's head.
"Atta boy!"
With a grin, Kakashi jumped into the air and punched the lightning bolt head-on, splitting it with a crackling palm.
"Heh. You call that a lightning bolt? I've seen more intimidating sparks from static socks."
As he landed, he held his left hand behind his back, striking an exaggerated martial arts pose.
BOOM BOOM BOOM!
Three more bolts rained down on him instantly.
"Okay, okay, that was sarcasm! Calm down, Zeus Jr.!"
Kakashi started dodging with Lightning Body Flicker, zigzagging between the bolts with absurd grace, muttering the whole time.
"Sure, all I wanted was to test my new jutsu, but now I'm in a live-action weather report. Wonderful."
He leapt, rolled, and flipped—lightning chasing him at every turn.
But surprisingly, it turned out to be a good training session.
He'd just been messing around recreating the famous "lightning cutter" moment, but now, he decided to make the most of it—training reflexes, agility, and reaction speed.
An hour later, Kakashi finally called it quits, his armor flickering out as he stood, drenched in sweat.
Then with a flick of his fingers, he vanished in a Flying Thunder God flash.
He reappeared in his room.
"God bless the Second Hokage. May his genius forever guide lazy overachievers like me."
Kakashi stripped down, stepped into the shower, and let the hot water pour over him.
As the steam filled the bathroom, he closed his eyes and calmly reviewed everything he'd just learned.
Meanwhile, at the Namikaze household...
"Minato, what's on your mind?"
Kushina had spotted Minato lounging on the recliner, lost in thought. She walked behind him and gently began massaging his temples.
"I was thinking... what if I could recreate the principle of the Tailed Beast Bomb into a new ninjutsu?"
Minato looked up, stroking Kushina's hand as he spoke softly.
"Eh? What brought this on?"
Kushina tilted her head, confused.
"When I fought the Raikage, I couldn't break through his Lightning Armor. Not even with Rasengan."
"In the end... Kakashi saved my life. He risked everything to seal Raikage's chakra, and gave me the opening to land the killing blow."
"Huh?!"
Kushina's expression changed completely.
"Kakashi saved your life?! Why didn't you tell me earlier?! I would've gone to thank him myself!"
Minato chuckled at her reaction.
"I was going to, but I've been too caught up in the Sand–Konoha alliance talks."
The truth was, he hadn't wanted to worry her.
"No way. As soon as this rain stops, I'm cooking a full-course 'thank-you' meal for Kakashi!"
Kushina already looked excited as she started planning ingredients.
"Ehm... yeah, about that—maybe let's not."
Minato's face twitched. "I think what Kakashi would really love is a new jutsu."
Kushina blinked.
"…You're scared I'll poison him again, aren't you?"
"N-No! I just think… he values power more than food right now."
Minato quickly changed the topic. "Anyway, you know the Tailed Beast Bomb works by changing chakra's form and compressing it to the extreme, then firing it all at once."
"I'm thinking… maybe it's possible to develop a version of that jutsu that regular shinobi can use."
Kushina raised an eyebrow.
"No hand seals, just pure chakra manipulation... Minato, are you serious?"
"As serious as when you snuck ramen into your ANBU gear."
Kushina's cheeks turned pink.
"Give me time. I think I can do it."
Kushina looked at him, her eyes softening.
He was glowing with determination again.
She loved that about him.
Just then, Minato reached out, pulled her close, and smiled.
"I think I have a breakthrough idea. Want to help me test it?"
Kushina bit her lip, eyes glimmering with affection.
"Only if you promise to reinforce the Nine Tails seal afterward."
Their eyes locked.
As thunder rolled again outside, no more words were spoken.
