Chapter 45: Chapter 45: The Queen of Rōran
Whoosh~
Whoosh~
Bang!
As fireworks bloomed in the night sky, a dense "crowd" gathered below in celebration.
"Long live the Queen!"
"Lady Sara!"
Countless "people" chanted joyfully in the streets. If one didn't already know they were puppets, it would be hard to tell.
Kakashi stood atop a tall building, surveying the scene below.
"This kind of setup… even knowing it's fake doesn't make it less creepy," he muttered, sighing as he traced the chakra lines in the air.
Suddenly, something caught his eye—a girl in elegant, regal attire stepped onto the balcony of the central palace, flanked by two puppet guards in dark green cloaks.
That must be the current Queen of Rōran.
Since most of his work had been underground so far, this was Kakashi's first time seeing Queen Sara in person. It was ironic—below her were empty shells of people, while she, isolated and deceived, was still very much real.
He turned to leave with a shake of his head.
"Ah!"
A sudden scream rang out from the palace balcony.
Sara, the young queen who had been basking in her people's adoration, was abruptly shoved by a hidden hand from behind one of her puppet guards. She toppled off the edge, falling straight toward the stone ground below.
She was about to die.
Swish!
A spark of lightning cracked through the air. A silver blur shot forward, and just like that—Sara vanished mid-fall.
The puppet crowd continued cheering, oblivious to the attempted assassination.
In a secluded hall, Kakashi set the stunned queen down gently.
"You're safe now," he said calmly.
"Eh? AHHH!"
Sara blinked, then screamed. Her hand flew up, ready to slap the silver-haired boy holding her.
"Oh, no need to thank me all at once," Kakashi said dryly as he casually tossed her onto a nearby couch.
"Ouch!"
Sara landed on her backside, eyes welling up as she winced. "Who are you, you rude little—!"
"Just a kind passerby. You know, the kind that helps stray animals across the road... or in your case, falling royalty."
Kakashi gave an exaggerated shrug, clearly unbothered by her glare.
"W-What? That's not— I'm the Queen, not a stray dog!"
"Ah. Apologies, Your Majesty of Gravitation."
Sara puffed up. "That's not funny!"
"What I mean is, we just happened to meet by chance, so why not leave it at that?" Kakashi said, turning to go.
"But hey—just a tip. If someone just tried to push you off a balcony, it probably means you're not on their 'keep alive' list anymore."
"You might want to wander into that 'joyous crowd' outside before you end up dying alone and confused."
He had just reached the exit when—
Swish!
Three masked figures appeared in front of him.
"You didn't stick to the plan," said the blond young man in front.
Kakashi scratched the back of his head, feigning innocence.
This was that moment when you're caught napping at your desk and your boss asks how the report's going.
"I could ask the same... who are you guys?" he said, just as Sara pushed past them to stand in front of him protectively.
"Actually," Kakashi said, just in time, "I'm with them."
That surprised him. The queen's impulsive defense of him made him feel like maybe saving her wasn't such a waste of chakra after all.
"We mean you no harm, Your Majesty," the blond man added. "We're here to protect you."
It was Minato Namikaze—Kakashi's sensei.
He then calmly explained the situation.
"So let me get this straight," Sara said, eyes wide with disbelief, "you're telling me Anrokuzan is a ninja from the future, who came here six years ago just to weaponize the dragon vein, start a war, and conquer the world?"
"That's completely absurd!"
"Anrokuzan was trusted by my mother. He's her successor and a peaceful leader—he'd never create weapons like that!"
Sara's voice was firm, eyes full of defiance.
Minato's tone remained gentle. "I'm sorry, but you've been deceived."
"I don't believe you!" she snapped. "You're the suspicious ones! You broke into the palace, and now you're feeding me lies!"
With a final glare, she turned on her heel.
"Hey, where are you going?" Kakashi called.
"To find out the truth myself!"
She paused only long enough to say it, then took off in a huff.
Kakashi watched her go and chuckled. "Says she doesn't believe us, but her legs are sprinting toward reality like they've got a grudge."
Minato turned to him. "Let's split up. Since you're confident Yamato and your clone can handle the base, you take on protecting Queen Sara."
"Yes, sir."
There went his lazy afternoon. Kakashi gave a mental sigh.
"Shadow Clone Technique!"
A clone appeared beside him instantly.
"Minato-sensei, take him to Naruto and help heal his injuries first."
Then without another word, Kakashi dashed after the queen.
