Chapter 13: Chapter 12: Labyrinth - Survive the Jester's Trap
Devil May Cry Naval Base - Mess Hall
"Hello!" a voice called out.
"You! From before!" the shipgirls who recognized Jester shouted, urging the others to stay back and remain cautious.
"Having fun, devil boy?" Jester sneered.
"What do you want?" Dante demanded, glaring.
Jester, unfazed, grinned. "You're enjoying yourself with these lovely ladies, so I thought I'd join the party."
Dante drew Rebellion, while Tenryuu and Tatsuta brandished their rigging's sword and spear.
"You're not invited!" they shouted.
The three charged, but Jester vanished instantly. A sudden light flared beneath them, swallowing Dante and the shipgirls.
Dante woke, sprawled on the ground in an unfamiliar place. Stone walls, ceiling, and floor formed a vast corridor stretching endlessly ahead and behind. The shipgirls were nowhere in sight.
"Damn it… we got separated," he muttered.
Elsewhere, the shipgirls stirred.
"Akagi, you okay?" Kaga asked.
"Yes… Kaga, where's everyone else?" Akagi replied.
"Gone," Kaga said grimly.
"Where are we?" Ooyodo asked.
"We were just in the mess hall, right?" Akashi said.
"Aki, Kaminari, Den, Kongou, you all okay?" Mamiya checked.
"What was that?" Aki wondered.
"Where is this?" Kaminari asked.
"No clue," Ooyodo admitted.
"We're fine," Den said.
"We got separated from the Admiral…" Kongou sighed.
Ooyodo, Mamiya, Houshou, Akashi, Aki, Kaminari, Den, and Kongou awoke together.
"What the hell is this place?" Tenryuu growled.
"Completely different from before," Kitakami noted.
"It's… creepy," Kisaragi shivered.
"Damn it! Tatsuta's gone!" Tenryuu exclaimed.
"Don't yell! It echoes!" Miyuki snapped.
"…My ears hurt," Hatsuyuki mumbled.
"We gotta find Tatsuta!" Tenryuu urged.
"I get it, but do you know the way?" Kitakami asked.
"Uh…" Tenryuu faltered.
Tenryuu, Kitakami, Kisaragi, and Hatsuyuki woke together.
"Are you all okay?" Tatsuta asked.
"Barely…" Haguro replied.
Tatsuta and Haguro were with drop ships from a previous mission: Miyuki, Satsuki, Fubuki, and Murakumo.
"I'm fine, Tatsuta!" Satsuki chirped.
"Fubuki, you okay?" Haguro asked.
"Probably!" Fubuki replied.
"This place is so dusty…" Murakumo grumbled.
Jester's voice echoed through the spaces. "Welcome to my special realm—a surprise from me! Have fun, friends!"
"Lousy surprise! This won't get you any girls!" Dante shot back.
The voice faded. A rumbling came from behind—a massive ball, Jester's face painted on it, rolled toward them, filling the corridor.
"Seriously bad taste!" Dante yelled.
He fired Ebony & Ivory, but the bullets ricocheted off. Switching to Spiral, a high-penetration anti-tank rifle, he shot again—same result. Dante bolted.
The giant ball appeared in the shipgirls' areas too.
Akagi-Kaga Pair
"Run, Kaga!" Akagi shouted.
"Damn it!" Kaga cursed.
Houshou's Group
"This tacky ball? I'll blast it!" Kongou deployed her rigging, firing her main guns. The ball rolled on, unscathed.
"What!?" Kongou gasped.
"No good! Run!" Houshou ordered.
They fled.
Tenryuu's Group
"Run!" Tenryuu yelled.
"Waaah!" the others screamed.
Tatsuta's Group
"It's still coming!" Murakumo complained.
"We need to regroup with the others!" Haguro said.
"I hope Tenryuu's okay…" Tatsuta murmured.
The floor collapsed beneath them.
"W-what!?" they cried, falling into a pit.
Akagi-Kaga Pair
Akagi and Kaga fled the ball. "That face pisses me off," Kaga growled.
"Kaga, ahead!" Akagi pointed.
A door appeared. They dove through into a wide chamber, the ball stopping its pursuit. Suddenly, Enigma demons dropped from the ceiling, their six arms firing magical arrows. Akagi and Kaga deployed their rigging, launching fighters to counterattack.
Houshou's Group
Fleeing the ball, they spotted a door and entered a chamber with a suspension bridge over boiling lava.
"We have to cross this?" Mamiya stammered.
"No turning back," Kongou said.
"No choice," Houshou agreed.
"It's scary…" Den whimpered.
"Don't look down, Aki, Den!" Kaminari warned.
"I know! Stop shaking it, Kaminari!" Aki snapped.
"I'm not!" Kaminari retorted.
"Ooyodo, you okay?" Mamiya asked.
"Barely… Akashi?" Ooyodo replied.
"This is terrifying!" Akashi admitted.
Blood Goyles swooped in, aiming to knock them into the lava. Houshou deployed her rigging, her fighters covering the group as they crossed.
Tenryuu-Kitakami Pair
Fleeing the ball, they reached a crossroad. "Right!" Tenryuu and Kitakami shouted.
"Left!" Kisaragi called, veering left.
Hatsuyuki missed the turn, running straight. The ball chased her.
"Why me!?" Hatsuyuki cried.
Tenryuu, Kitakami, and Kisaragi sighed in relief, but another ball dropped from the ceiling.
"…What?" they gasped.
It rolled toward Tenryuu and Kitakami. "It's coming!" Kitakami yelled.
"Run!" Tenryuu shouted.
Meanwhile, spider-like Arachne demons appeared, attacking Kisaragi. "No! Stay away!" she screamed, fleeing.
Tatsuta's Group
"What is this!?" Miyuki groaned.
"This hurts! Where are we?" Murakumo snapped.
They landed in a wide chamber. Soul Eater demons, gelatinous and eerie, emerged. The group deployed their rigging, firing main guns, but the demons turned to purple mist, dodging the shells.
"Danger!" Haguro shouted, blasting a Soul Eater sneaking behind Murakumo. It writhed and vanished.
"Thanks, Haguro!" Murakumo said.
"Why did it work this time?" Satsuki asked.
"I think I get it," Tatsuta said. "They solidify when attacking from behind. That's when we hit them."
Trusting her theory, the group covered each other's backs, attacking the Soul Eaters as they materialized.
Tenryuu-Kitakami Pair
"Ow, damn it!" Tenryuu groaned.
"I don't feel alive anymore," Kitakami muttered.
After falling through the trapdoor, a torrent of water surged toward them. "What!?" they yelped.
"This is all we get!?" Tenryuu shouted as the flood swept them away.
Tatsuta's Group
"Exhausted…" Haguro panted.
"Me too…" Satsuki added.
"Same…" Fubuki mumbled.
"I hope Hatsuyuki's okay," Murakumo said.
Having defeated the Soul Eaters, they moved forward, finding another door. "Another one…" Murakumo muttered.
"More demons?" Satsuki worried.
"No choice but to go," Haguro said.
"Right," Tatsuta agreed.
They entered a twisted amusement park, Jester's face plastered everywhere.
"This is beyond bad taste," Tatsuta said.
"Gross," Satsuki added.
Akagi's and Houshou's groups arrived.
"Miyuki! Hatsuyuki!" Akagi called.
"Miyuki! Murakumo!" Hatsuyuki ran to them.
"Where were you!?" Murakumo snapped.
"You're all safe," Houshou said.
"Glad you're okay, Houshou," Ooyodo replied.
"Is this everyone?" Kaga asked.
"Kisaragi's missing!" Satsuki said.
"The Admiral too!" Murakumo added.
"And Tenryuu…" Tatsuta said.
"Kitakami too," Den noted.
"And Naka!" Fubuki added.
A massive water pillar erupted from a nearby fountain, spitting out Tenryuu and Kitakami.
"Tenryuu!" Tatsuta gasped.
"Kitakami!" the others cried.
"You're okay!" Tenryuu said to Tatsuta.
"You too…" Tatsuta replied.
"Stay back, destroyers!" Tenryuu barked.
"Only the Admiral, Kisaragi, and Naka are left," Houshou said.
"Yo," a voice called.
Dante approached, carrying Kisaragi. "Admiral!" the group shouted.
"Kisaragi!" Satsuki and Fubuki rushed to her.
"Everyone here?" Dante asked.
"Naka's still missing," Den said.
The amusement park's rides whirred to life. Jester appeared on the merry-go-round.
"Not bad, making it this far!" he taunted.
The shipgirls tensed, deploying their rigging.
"This tacky place your idea?" Dante asked.
"Don't be so mad, devil boy," Jester said, eyeing the shipgirls. "Your ladies have odd tastes."
"What's that mean?" Kaga demanded, bow drawn.
"Your friends were killed by demons, yet you stick with this demon? Got a thing for that?"
They assumed he meant Cerberus and the magical weapons. "We trust the Admiral. You don't get to judge," Akagi said firmly.
Jester smirked. "Your Admiral is a devil."
The shipgirls froze, especially those who'd lost comrades to demons.
"Stop spouting nonsense! The Admiral's no devil!" Tenryuu roared.
"Whoops, said too much?" Jester mocked, covering his mouth.
"If you doubt me, ask devil boy yourself," he added.
"Lies, right? The Admiral being a devil—it's a bad joke, isn't it?" Ooyodo asked.
Dante, glaring at Jester, said nothing.
