Chapter 32: Chapter 31: Infestant ~To the Temple~
Dante's group drove toward a suddenly appeared temple. The streets were deserted, residents likely evacuated.
Suzuya murmured, "We're about to fight demons, huh…"
Tatsuta teased, "What, scared now?"
Suzuya replied, "Not really, but it makes you think."
The others grew pensive, sharing her sentiment.
Yuubari said, "Right? I expected Deep Sea Ships upon assignment, not demons."
Miyuki added, "That was a shock, wasn't it?"
Miyuki glanced at Murakumo for agreement.
Murakumo asked, "The Commander?"
Miyuki nodded, "Yeah, 'half-demon' sounded like nonsense."
Jintsuu admitted, "I was skeptical at first."
Shigure said, "I got eaten by a demon before arriving."
Murakumo snapped, "Stop that story."
Kitakami noted, "That shared dream was weird, right?"
Denki agreed, "It was intense."
Souryuu asked, "I hear about it a lot, but was it that wild?"
Only some shipgirls saw the shared dream, leaving others curious yet doubtful.
Satsuki explained, "It's the Commander fighting endlessly."
Hatsuyuki added, "Against everyone, non-stop."
Fumizuki said, "Not a dream I'd wanna see…"
Kisaragi, staring at the Holy Water Dante gave her, murmured, "It's tough."
Aoba, intrigued, scribbled notes while listening.
Tatsuta said, "Speaking of dreams, Akagi's dream is curious too~"
Akatsuki asked, "Does the Commander die?"
Tatsuta declared, "No way. He's unbeatable… absolutely."
Her words seemed to reassure herself.
Junyou, carefree, said, "That's why we're here—no worries~"
Inside the car…
Akagi asked, "Where's the army?"
Dante replied, "Still ahead."
Kaga warned, "Admiral, my planes can't fly at night. If we fight demons…"
Dante said, "Took too long preparing. If planes are out, leave it to the others outside."
Houshou asked, "What's the temple's interior like?"
Dante shrugged, "We'll see when we get there."
The car sped toward the city center. Soon, the army's blockade came into view.
Akagi pointed, "There."
Kaga asked, "Will they let us through?"
Dante said, "If not, we'll force our way."
Houshou pleaded, "Please, no recklessness—everyone's in the back."
Dante quipped, "Tell that to the army."
Stopping at the defense line, a soldier approached. After verifying their identity, they were let through, though not without snide remarks from the army. Dante smirked, while many shipgirls in the trailer stuck out their tongues. Adorable.
Dante said, "Now it's game time."
The temple's appearance dimmed the city's lights, casting an eerie vibe.
Dante shouted, "Get ready!"
Entering the defense line meant stepping into enemy territory. Demons could strike anytime. As they advanced, demons swooped from above.
Tatsuta yelled, "Intercept! Don't let them near!"
Tatsuta, Suzuya, Murakumo, and Shigure fired at the demons. Other shipgirls steadied them in the trailer.
Miyuki complained, "It's cramped, and rigging makes it worse!"
Murakumo snapped, "Endure it if you want to live!"
Naka suggested, "Use the curry?"
Yuubari vetoed, "No! That's our trump card, not for here."
Hiei's curry was reserved for tough foes, not low-level demons.
Dodging attacks, they spotted a demon ahead—Arachne, human upper body, spider lower half.
Dante ordered, "Hold the wheel."
Akagi panicked, "Me!?"
"Just keep it straight," Dante said, leaning out, rapid-firing Ebony & Ivory, mowing down demons.
"Getting fun!" he grinned.
A demon, shot by the shipgirls, landed on the hood, still twitching.
Akagi screamed, "Eek!?"
Its grotesque face pressed against the windshield.
Akagi, frantic, fumbled the controls, "Doesn't this car have something!?"
Washer fluid sprayed the demon's face.
Akagi yelled, "Not that!"
Houshou urged, "Calm down!"
Akagi kept fumbling, activating wipers.
"Useless!" she cried.
Kaga shouted, "Admiral!"
Dante grabbed the demon, yanking it off. "No free rides!"
Back inside, he said, "Akagi, wipers and fluid won't kill demons."
"I know!" she snapped.
Haguro asked, "Is it over?"
An explosion rocked the car. A military helicopter appeared, firing missiles at them.
Satsuki gasped, "The army's!?"
Suzuya cried, "Why're they attacking us!?"
Shiratsuyu wailed, "We're too hated!"
Despite army-navy tensions, no one expected an attack now.
Hiei declared, "I'll shoot!"
Jintsuu stopped her, "Wait! You'll kill the pilot!"
Hiei hesitated, "But…!"
Suzuya asked, "Then what!?"
Ooi warned, "We'll die otherwise!"
Junyou urged, "Decide fast!"
Hiei looked to Kongou, who nodded slowly.
Hiei shouted, "Fire! Hit it!"
Her shot struck the helicopter, but it emerged through the smoke.
Ikazuchi gasped, "What!?"
Shigure asked, "Why didn't it crash?"
Souryuu questioned, "Is that possible?"
Yuubari realized, "Impossible… unless…!"
Miyuki asked, "Unless what?"
Hatsuyuki echoed, "That 'unless'?"
They realized: it's a demon—Infested Chopper, a military helicopter possessed by the Infestant parasite, which could control both living and inanimate objects.
Fumizuki whispered, "That's a demon…?"
Souryuu urged, "It's a demon, so no pilot to worry about—shoot!"
Hiei's shots hit but didn't down it.
Tatsuta cursed, "How tough is that thing!?"
Akagi pleaded, "Admiral, anything!?"
Dante eyed Yuubari's switches. "Which is which?"
He pressed one, launching mini-missiles. They homed in, hitting the Chopper.
Yuubari cheered, "See that? My invention! Awesome, right?"
The explosions didn't down it.
Yuubari fumed, "Why won't it fall!?"
Houshou urged, "Try again!"
Dante pressed the switch—nothing.
"One-shot deal?" he groaned.
Kaga asked, "Anything else?"
Dante tried switches: a buzzsaw ("For logs or barriers," Yuubari said), decorative lights ("Christmas vibes"), wings ("For romance"), and a torpedo that fell and exploded behind.
Tatsuta snapped, "A torpedo on a car!?"
Suzuya added, "None of this helps!"
Dante ordered, "Use the curry!"
Haguro said, "Hiei, your curry's time to shine!"
Hiei grumbled, "Not thrilled!"
Switching to curry shells, Hiei fired. The curry splattered the Chopper, stopping its propellers. It crashed, exploding.
Naka said, "Should've used curry first."
Yuubari sighed, "Our trump card, wasted…"
Another attack hit, snapping the trailer's hitch. It flipped, spilling the shipgirls. Dante stopped the car.
Aoba groaned, "Ouch, now what?"
A tank rumbled in—Infested Tank, another possessed vehicle.
Suzuya exclaimed, "Now a tank!?"
Denki noted, "Army's too!"
Tatsuta yelled, "I hate the army!"
Shells fired. Souryuu shouted, "Hide!"
The shipgirls took cover behind rubble. The tank aimed at the car.
Dante ordered, "Get out!"
Akagi, Kaga, and Houshou scrambled, but Houshou's clothes caught, trapping her.
Dante cursed, "Idiot…!"
He rushed back. "What're you doing!?"
Houshou stammered, "My clothes…!"
The tank fired, igniting the car.
Kaga gasped, "No…"
Akagi cried, "Why…?"
Souryuu pulled them to cover. "Look!"
Dante stood atop rubble, holding Houshou.
"Close call," he said.
Houshou apologized, "Sorry, Admiral."
"Join the others and hide," he ordered, charging the tank.
Its shells missed Dante's agile dodges. He spotted a large, moving eye on the tank—its weak point. Stabbing it with Rebellion, he pushed deeper, but the tank endured, aiming machine guns. Dante leaped back, firing Ebony & Ivory. The tank sprayed flames, blocking approach, but stopped. Dante charged again, only for a curry shell to fly in, splattering curry. Dante dodged; the tank, coated, burned and broke down.
Dante glared at the shipgirls, unrigged, unsure who fired. "Who shot that?"
Silence.
Dante, half-demon, risked harm from curry. "Who tried to kill me with it?"
Awkward glances. One avoided his eyes.
"Yuubari," Dante said.
She flinched, "…Teehee☆"
"Be careful," he sighed.
Kitakami asked, "Now what? Car's gone."
Jintsuu suggested, "Walk?"
Hatsuyuki groaned, "Tough…"
Akagi noted, "We're short on time."
Dante said, "Got another ride."
Light burst from him, forming Geryon, a giant horse.
"Get on," Dante said, opening its carriage.
Tatsuta asked, "This thing?"
Suzuya questioned, "Is it safe?"
Dante forced them in. The carriage fit all but was cramped. Closing the door, he said, "Over capacity."
Akagi protested, "You're not riding!?"
Dante ignored her, shutting the door. Spotting an abandoned bike, he started it and rode off, Geryon following.
The temple glowed red ahead…
