Chapter 20: 20 flower plantation.
After a gloomy day night passed and sun rise over the river felt surreal. Another day started.
After finishing her morning breakfast, Aparna left for grandpa Surappa's house. As she reached their house, she saw the young man leaving for work already. She took few big strides and reached the house in a short time, went inside , grabbed two baskets and left by saying she'll come back after work. She ran and caught upto the young man very shortly. At the grandpa's house they just felt something came and went back like a sudden wind. They chuckled at Aparna seeing how desperately she wanted to follow him. Aparna caught up to him shortly but he didn't even glance at her. She called him once... twice.... four times..... still no response. He just kept walking forward without giving her any attention. She just silently walked with him to field by his side without uttering a single sound. They reached the field and went a little deeper as flowers there're ready for reaping. Young man had no difficulty in following the narrow path. He passed through them as if he were a snake, on the other side Aparna could not help but stop multiple times to pass through narrow spaces between the plants. He was not going in the path that was made to pass normally instead, he chose to pass through the plants as if to annoy Aparna. Aparna ''wait a minute. I can't catch up. Lead to a wider space so that we can pass freely '' with pleading voice. He still didn't care about her. He just passed through the small spaces between the plants. Finally they reached the portion of land where need to pluck the flowers. He suddenly stopped and placed the baskets on ground and started doing his work. Aparna looked like a kitten whirled in mud with flowers and leaves stuck on her hair, her saree muddled as she passed through narrow spaces. She looked so pitiful. She inwardly sighed and '' who am I to complain when the one who came here willingly is myself!!'' She encouraged herself mentally and started working beside the young man. She looked at him often to check if he was looking at him, to her disappointment he didn't even look at her once. He kept doing his work. One basket's filled with flowers and started filling the other one. Aparna, who was busy looking at him , couldn't even fill quarter of the basket not to mention one. She stopped working for a while and went to the other side of him and looked at him slanting herself to look at his eyes. Young man flinched as something suddenly appeared into his line of sight. Aparna briefly chuckled. He regained his composure and started again. Aparna let out a loud long sigh shaking her head sideways long with her wrists flailing. She didn't think that it would be too difficult to hear his voice. She repeated the same stance again and again for about five times only to be treated like invisible dust. She gave up for now and continued with the work she filled more than ¾ of the basket by the time the young man completed two baskets. He took those on to his shoulders and started walking towards exit. Aparna thought'' thank God he is walking on a wider path now. I wouldn't have known what happened if I were to walk in those narrow path with this basket '' letting out a sigh of relief. They walked to grandpa's house and placed those flower in the specified room and went to the kitchen to grab some water.
After coming out of the kitchen he was about to go out. Aparna who was just about to sit, stood up immediately and followed him. Grandma saw both of them doing the same thing as if they're twins.
Aparna followed him without knowing where he was going. On the way she encountered many people , but just greeted as they pass by because the young man in front of her is not the type to wait for her sake. She felt bad to just pass by when everyone calling her with such affection. She shook her head violently to disperse those thought and to follow one and only goal for now that is right in front of her. He entered into a small shop selling flowers and took the order for flowers and. As venkanna put his hand in the money box... Aparna '' uncle Venkanna, how are you?''asked excitedly as she found someone to talk when he stopped. Venkanna ''Aparna, what are you doing here at this time?''asked in surprise. Aparna just pointed her finger towards the young man. ''Oh .! You came here on errand of Surappa, okay okay. Take this chrysanthemum.''handed her a flower from the basket of chrysanthemums. She took that and '' these really smell so nice and pleasant. Thank you uncle Venkanna'',placed in her hair. ''Come by our home sometime your aunt miss you.'' Venkanna added. '' Sure uncle. I miss you son too. His cheeks are so round plump....'' making delicious sound. Venkanna felt proud. Venkanna gave the money to the young man and as he counted the money Aparna looked around the shop and found a basket with multi layered jasmine flowers. She turned towards venkanna '' uncle, can I take a flower from this basket?'' Venkanna nodded. After counting the money he left the shop followed by Aparna. He went to the river bank and sat on a big rock which enough for a fully grown man to sleep on. As it was mid day he spread the towel which is over his shoulder on to the rock. He just sat and stared deeply into the river. Aparna just sat beside him with a small distance between them. They just sat together without a single word exchanged. As the sun felt too hot Aparna put over her veil of saree over her head. The young man next to her seemed like he's not at all affected by the heat. She struggled to sit there but did not get up. The young man got up and walked towards the river...
