Chapter 63: Chapter 63 : Rune Workbench

"Alright, then we'll have to change locations. It seems the place I prepared can't be used," said Lily with a slight shrug of her shoulders.

The two of them quickly made their way to the study. Lily wasn't entirely sure how much Anduin understood about Runology, so she asked, "Runes, or magic symbols, are primarily made up of ancient runes. How much do you know about this field?"

Anduin, who had previously read a few books on ancient runes, replied honestly, "I've read Easy Introduction to Ancient Runes, and I also have a Runes Dictionary and a Magic Symbol Pronunciation Table. I can barely recognize all these characters. Right now, if I refer to the dictionary, I can manage some basic translations, but I'm still completely confused about how to combine ancient runes to form actual runes."

"Anduin, your diligence and erudition always amaze people. What you've mastered so far is more than what many third-year students know. So, tell me, how do you understand runes and magic symbols?" Lily looked at Anduin with a mix of surprise and curiosity. Ancient Runes was an elective for third-years, and it was rare for someone to know so much in less than a year after enrolling.

Anduin recalled what he had read in books and, combining it with his own understanding, explained, "As far as I know, ancient runes are a form of magical writing, which is why they're also called magic symbols. It's said that the runes existing in the magical world were learned from places like the bones of certain magical creatures. Some scholars even believe they were a script created by the gods. After many years of study and research, wizards eventually mastered their meanings and functions. Throughout history, many runes have been lost or forgotten, while the runes as we know them are formed by combining ancient runes in specific ways. These runes hold more precise and powerful magical properties. In my understanding, if ancient runes are like letters, then runes are like words. And if ancient runes are words, then full runes are like phrases or even short sentences".

Lily's eyes lit up as she listened to Anduin's explanation. She nodded approvingly and said, "It seems your understanding of Runology runs quite deep. That's correct. Most runes are indeed composed of ancient runes, and many spells are essentially translations of one or more rune combinations into incantations."

Anduin nodded in understanding. He had already learned a bit about this from Professor Flitwick's Charms Club. Moreover, Quirrell, a senior member of the club, was even attempting to invent a spell called the Amplifying Charm, which involved continuously combining and modifying runes before translating them into a usable incantation.

Lily continued in a calm, instructive tone, "That's right. To conduct proper rune research, you first need to master and study ancient runes. Also, times are changing; many new runes have been discovered, and some previously lost characters have been restored by archaeologists."

This was the first time Anduin had heard that new characters were still being discovered. He listened intently, his gaze fixed on Lily.

Seeing Anduin's focused expression, Lily couldn't help but smile slightly. Teachers always took delight in diligent students, and she went on, "Similarly, many spells or runes have been passed down through generations, but the runes that compose them have been lost. Many scholars are working on restoring these. Mr. Edgar Bones, whom you've met, is a leading figure in this field. He once restored a lost character from the Freezing Charm; that character means 'loss,' and he also developed several different rune combinations."

"Oh?" Anduin had never heard this before. He hadn't expected that the bearded uncle he'd met earlier possessed such expertise.

Lily continued with enthusiasm, "The study of combining runes into new runes and how these interact with each other is even more complex. Many runes contain multiple meanings, like this one." Lily drew a symbol on a piece of parchment and then explained, "This character means 'fly,' but it can also mean 'leave' or 'go.' It's one of the characters that make up the Levitation Charm."

Anduin nodded, carefully committing the character to memory.

"If combined differently, it can form Accio or the Expelling Charm. This character also appears in the rune combination for the Muggle-Repelling Charm. It's a very practical symbol," Lily added patiently.

"And in the runes or rune combinations that make up many spells and alchemical tools, we usually first identify a core character, which we generally call the base character, and then we combine other runes around it. The combination of magical runes isn't like ordinary writing, which follows strict rules like left-to-right orientation. The ways runes can be combined are varied: some form circles, others rectangles, some even overlap, and many characters themselves are three-dimensional, requiring three-dimensional configurations. At this point, we need to use a specialized tool for studying runes, and that is the rune workbench."

"A rune workbench?" Anduin had never imagined there was so much to it—or that going deeper into the field would require specialized equipment.

"Exactly. Let me show you." With that, Lily drew her wand and tapped it lightly in the air. A cabinet in the study swung open to both sides, revealing a workbench adorned with intricate openwork patterns. It resembled an elegantly carved desk, but its complex structure made it clear that it was no ordinary piece of furniture.

Lily then guided Anduin to sit in front of the workbench. Upon closer inspection, Anduin noticed that the surface wasn't flat; it was slightly concave overall, with numerous hollow areas that emitted a faint magical glow. There was no doubt, this table wasn't meant for ordinary writing.

"Now I'll demonstrate how it works. This is a fully functional rune workbench, equipped with features like recording, materialization, combination, and testing. We can record certain runes, including three-dimensional characters, and materialization allows us to retrieve those recorded symbols, like this."

Lily uttered an incantation, and a rune appeared on the surface of the workbench. It was the very same 'fly' character she had shown him earlier.

Anduin couldn't help but marvel, not only at the magic of the workbench itself but also at the vast, intricate knowledge contained within Runology. All of this was opening up an entirely new world to him.

"Now we can try some combinations." Lily summoned several more characters and began combining them skillfully. It seemed to be a relatively simple configuration, made entirely of flat surfaces without yet forming a three-dimensional combination.
