Chapter 7: The Battle of Sanyou(3)

The encirclement was formed, and the walls began advancing quickly. Kael, Hozu, Tetsuji and Ishiro were at the forefront of said assault, having jumped over our shield-walls, and they were destroying their forces, making sure no counter-attacks were formed.

On the other side.

Shin, Kyou Kai, and their 3 giants were also over the shield walls, destroying their defences and allowing the walls to advance quicker. At the same time, the Hi Shin Light Infantry, alongside the cavalry of both forces, were working their assess off in the Eastern part of the Left flank, between the left flank and the middle.

They were engaging the Wei Forces there, and making sure none of them got too close to comfort to the ensuing encircling.

However, the encircling was working. Very much so, we'd already closed the gaps. Pressing the remaining Wei soldiers together into a large mosh-pit, as the spears did their work. Slaughtering the men closest to the shield walls.

Additionally, as the encircling advanced, and the circle became smaller. Those who left the circle to make space, formed up behind. Creating a second line, which could utilise their spears to attack from behind their brother.

The entire strategy proved extremely efficient, and 5 minutes following the total encirclement, over 1000 Wei soldiers had been killed, and only 1500 remained. And those numbers were quickly decreasing, I suspected we had something along the lines of 3 minutes left, till they all died.

However, I kept urging them to hurry up, as the smokescreen was closing in. And the other Wei elements, those not encircled. We're beginning to retreat slowly, which was boosting morale. But we didn't want to charge too far ahead.

After the encircling, I had killed another 3 or so officers, the highest among them being a 500-man commander.

However, the slaughter of the encircled troops was taking too long, and I needed to hurry it along.

"Solider, contact Kaen, Roku and Hozu. Order them to perform the Water-Gate Formation." I said to a nearby man on a horse, and he nodded, rushing off.

My hands reached into my quiver, and I felt approximately 25 arrows left, I carried about 32 arrows per quiver, and I only had one as it stood. So I had shot 7 shots, which was fine honestly. But I planned to spare them for officers, and when they were most needed.

It took another 3 minutes, till my new strategy was prepared, and it started with Roku and his cavalry.

All 300 of them, or 288 charged, gathering momentum from the open plains, away from the Battlefield. Before they charged straight towards our encirclement, more specifically the area which Kaen´s troops occupied, on Shin's side of the encirclement.

They didn´t intend to stop, and as they were about to crash into them, the wall opened. And about 10 men stepped aside, letting in the horses, 5 horses in width as they charged into the encircled troops, bunched together and prime targets.

The unsuspecting men were trashed, ridden over, kicked, slashed and punched. The cavalry was led by Ishiro, who ensured no trap was set for them, as they charged through the encirclement.

As they were about to reach the other side of the encirclement, whereas Hozu´s men stood, they suddenly took a right turn. As they began riding the edges of the encirclement, crashing into any troops there. And killing even more with their weapons.

They continued like that for 2 rounds, before they eventually left. By Hozu opening up and letting them through, before closing it again.

The Cavalry charges had been efficient, the sheer kills racked up to 300. And during those 5 minutes, over 600 of the Wei Infantry died, 400 to the cavalry and 200 to the infantry.

But that was not the only thing the Cavalry Charge affected. The experience of a cavalry charge into their mosh-pit, slaughtering their friends. Made morale at an all-time low, as many of the soldiers simply threw down their weapons and surrendered.

Of course, we took none. And they were killed the second they put it down, as we charged forth. The Wei were given no mercy, and although they fought like caged animals. They were in a cage after all, and there was no escape.

However, I didn´t have infinite amounts of time, which I was reminded of by a ringing of a large bell, which halted the Wei Forces, and most of the Qin Forces.

"ATTACK!" I shouted with all my might, and my men didn´t hesitate. Jumping onto the Wei soldiers, who had been ordered to drop all their fights and escape at the sound of the bell.

Unfortunately, they quickly regained themselves. But they were far too gone, with less than 600 troops left. They were being slaughtered, and less than a minute remained.

However, I also noticed the smoke cloud, approaching at a dangerous pace. So I grabbed the nearest soldier, bringing him in close.

"Contact all my officers, once the last of the Wei are slaughtered, form the turtle in the middle of the encircling." I said to him, and he bowed. Forming a salute before he rode off, heading towards my officers.

The Arrows would be extremely dangerous, especially against units not in a formation, the turtle would heavily lower the casualties, and I just needed to hunt down those bell-squads, and they wouldn't be aware of our position.

But then the chariots would come, and honestly. Just remaining in the turtle would be better, but I had no plans of doing so.

For Shin had an interesting strategy of charging the main force, and I sure as hell wouldn't let that opportunity slide away.

And with that, I waited as the smoke-screen slowly closed in on us, and with the repeated sounds of the enemy ´gongs´, almost all fighting closed down. And so did ours, as the last of the Wei Forces fell.

I regrouped with my main force, as I found my 5 officers. Standing with the infantry.

"Kaen, Hozu, Tetsuji. From the turtle formation, and began slowly retreating away from the Battlefield, the infantry fight is over." I told the 3 men, and they nodded. Rushing to their infantry and beginning to shout orders.

"Ishiro, Roku. How many cavalry do we have left?" I asked them, and Roku responded.

"285, sir. Most of whom are wounded, so we just sent them back. But those are our current count, might be one or two off."

"Alrighty good. We´ll remain in the smokescreen, and find the moment to strike a counter-blow, alright?" I said, and both of them nodded. Steadfastly.

"Alright, let's form a long line. 5 in width, make sure the cavalry always focus on the man in front of them, and follow him. Understood?" I said, and they responded.

"Yes, sir!"

"Alrighty, hurry up. Form them up behind Ishiro." I told Roku, and he nodded. Getting to work, regrouping his cavalry as the smokescreen began enveloping the Battlefield.

Just as the last horseman formed up, a whistling sound was heard. Followed up by hundreds of arrows hitting our forces, mainly the infantry. But luckily, they had formed the turtle formation and were relatively unharmed.

"Ishiro, run around in random motions. I´ll make sure the arrows don't hit me." I said simply, not bothering to explain the principle of the various bells around the battlefield, which notified the archers of our position.

And with that, Ishiro headed off. The long cavalry line following him.
