Chapter 58: CHAPTER 58

Uchiha Shisui shook his head, and Uchiha Itachi followed suit, indicating their uncertainty.

Uchiha Gen smiled faintly and turned to Itachi. "Why is it impossible?"

Uchiha Itachi froze. After a long hesitation, he still couldn't articulate a reason. "I... I can't think of one. My intuition just says that such a thing couldn't happen."

"What about you, Shisui?"

"Earlier, Gen-sama, you mentioned that Senju Hashirama led the founding of Konohagakure, so he was deeply trusted by the people."

"If he declined the position, wouldn't that betray everyone's expectations?"

Uchiha Itachi's eyes lit up as if realizing something. "That's the reason."

"Shisui, you're absolutely right."

Acknowledged, Shisui immediately smiled with satisfaction.

"Senju Hashirama was the ideal candidate for the First Hokage. Only he had the prestige and popularity to unify the village. No one else could manage it."

"Without Hashirama, Uchiha Madara might have enforced leadership through sheer strength. But with Hashirama present, Madara couldn't overpower public opinion."

"If someone else had assumed the role without support, it would have caused unrest. Instability would lead to internal conflict. And civil war would have destroyed Konoha before it ever solidified."

"Hashirama could never allow that outcome. So he had no choice but to take up the mantle of Hokage."

"Though I'm Uchiha, I must agree Senju Hashirama's appointment was both logical and appropriate."

Shisui and Itachi nodded solemnly, acknowledging the truth of Hashirama's superiority.

"After Senju Hashirama became Hokage, he promised Madara the position of Second Hokage. But by then, Uchiha Madara had already decided to leave the village."

"Why?"

"Because he no longer trusted Hashirama."

"Did he lose faith just because he didn't get the title of Hokage?"

"That was part of it."

"From what I've deduced, Madara's mindset was shaped by the times."

"To Madara, the Hokage should be the strongest."

"Who was considered 'capable' during the Warring States Period?"

"A powerful shinobi," Uchiha Itachi answered immediately.

"Correct."

Itachi beamed upon receiving Gen's affirmation.

"In that harsh era, survival depended on strength. The strongest naturally held authority."

"So if Hashirama, the strongest, voluntarily gave up the role, wasn't it fitting for Madara, second only to him, to take it?"

"But that's where Senju Tobirama came in."

"Without Tobirama's interference, Madara still might not have secured the position. Public support was against him."

"No concrete record describes Tobirama's involvement, but it's widely believed that his opposition was firm and influential."

"This created a deep, irreparable rift between Madara and Hashirama."

"There was another reason Madara couldn't stay. He felt betrayed by his own people."

Shisui frowned. "Why would his own clan turn against him?"

"Because a vicious rumor had spread throughout the village."

"That Uchiha Madara killed his younger brother, Uchiha Izuna, to gain the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan."

"Many including some Uchiha believed this."

"Why?"

"Because Madara's power was frightening, and he had transplanted his brother's eyes."

"Wait… Madara really killed his brother and stole his eyes?" Shisui gasped in horror.

Itachi also looked stunned.

"The records state otherwise. Uchiha Izuna died from battle injuries—most sources say it was at the hands of Tobirama Senju."

"Before his death, Izuna entrusted his eyes to Madara to preserve the clan's strength."

"Phew…"

Both Shisui and Itachi sighed in relief. They couldn't accept that their ancestor had committed fratricide for power.

"Didn't Madara explain?"

"What's the point? Sometimes the truth is irrelevant. Once a rumor spreads, any denial just sounds like a cover-up."

"Public opinion was never in Madara's favor."

"Besides, Madara's pride wouldn't allow him to grovel or explain himself."

"He simply walked away. If the village didn't want him, then he wouldn't stay."

Shisui narrowed his eyes. "Who would start such a rumor?"

Uchiha Gen chuckled. "What do you think, Shisui?"

"I have a guess… but I don't want to believe it."

"Haha, the real question is: who benefits from the rumor?"

"Do you think it was Hashirama or Tobirama?"

Shisui replied honestly, "The First Hokage had no need. Madara wasn't a threat to his position."

"Smart answer."

"Yes, Senju Hashirama, by most accounts, was benevolent and wouldn't resort to such tactics."

"Besides, he tried to make peace, even when Madara became a threat."

Zhisui nodded in agreement. "What happened next?"

"After the two parted ways, Uchiha Madara seized control of the Nine-Tails and returned to challenge Senju Hashirama. In the end, Madara was defeated and presumed dead in their legendary battle at the Valley of the End. Senju Hashirama also passed away not long after, due to the toll of constant battles and overuse of his chakra."

"What? He controlled the Nine-Tails?"

"Was Uchiha Madara really that powerful?"

Shisui was stunned. He had witnessed the terrifying power of a partial Nine-Tails Jinchūriki during the battle at Kirigakure.

Even a Jinchūriki unable to fully control the beast was fearsome—how overwhelming must the complete Nine-Tails be under the full control of someone like Madara?

"According to historical records, the Uchiha clan's Mangekyō Sharingan and the Senju clan's Wood Release are the natural counters to tailed beasts—any of them, no matter how powerful."

"It is said that, before both Senju Hashirama and Uchiha Madara, even the mighty Nine-Tails could be subdued with little difficulty."

"What? That powerful?"

"That's hard to even imagine!"

Shisui was once again floored, his expression frozen in disbelief.

Uchiha Itachi, too, was visibly shaken.

Although he didn't yet fully understand the scale of power between the Nine-Tails, Madara, and Hashirama, a swelling pride grew in Itachi's chest.

Look this was the heritage of the Uchiha clan. No wonder his father constantly emphasized the clan's legacy and honor.

"I can hardly imagine it either," Uchiha Gen said, half-truthfully.

After all, what one sees in written accounts or even through inherited memories pales in comparison to experiencing such power firsthand. But it didn't matter someday, he would reach that level, and maybe even surpass it.

After a pause to digest what he had heard, Shisui asked again, "Why did Uchiha Madara return to fight Senju Hashirama?"

"The official record claims he intended to destroy Konoha."

Seeing their concern, Uchiha Gen added, "But that's not the whole truth."

"If Madara truly wanted to destroy Konoha, he could have infiltrated the village directly and unleashed the Nine-Tails inside it. With his skill and summoning technique, entering Konoha unnoticed and making it a battlefield wouldn't have been difficult."

"I believe his true motive was to defeat his lifelong rival Senju Hashirama.once and for all."

The real objective, of course, was to obtain Hashirama's cells to achieve the power of the Sage of Six Paths, but that part remained unspoken.

Shisui and Itachi nodded solemnly, accepting that explanation. The Konoha they knew and loved was already deeply tied to their identity, and neither wanted to imagine it destroyed.

"Shisui, Itachi, remember this well."

"Remember what?" they asked in unison.

"Our Uchiha clan was second only to the Senju in the founding of Konoha. All other clans came after us."

"I'm referring to the true Senju bloodline like Lady Tsunade, the granddaughter of the First Hokage. Distant relatives and allied clans don't count."

"When Uchiha Madara left Konoha, our clan had grown comfortable with village life. No one followed him. That was the moment our path diverged from his."

"Still, Madara was once our clan leader. It's difficult to sever that connection entirely."

"Though he died in that battle, it was Madara who initiated the conflict. Senju Hashirama can't be blamed."

"Therefore, the Uchiha bear some responsibility for that tragedy. In that sense, we owe the Senju a moral debt."

"And since the Senju clan led Konoha's founding, their political power naturally exceeded ours."

"So lowering our heads sometimes is not a disgrace. Wouldn't you agree?"

Shisui and Itachi nodded quietly. Indeed, they were not yet equal.

"But that doesn't mean we should belittle ourselves. The Uchiha are still the co-founders of Konoha."

"Do you understand? Without both the Uchiha and the Senju, Konoha would never have come into existence!"

"Do you want to know why?"

Since today was a rare break, Gen decided to pour his ideology into them thoroughly—let them drink deeply from the well of knowledge. The more they absorbed, the more they would resonate with his perspective.

Shisui and Itachi nodded eagerly, eyes wide, their curiosity ignited like dry leaves meeting fire...
