CHAPTER 76: The lesson begins
Denki couldn't help but feel a weary feeling of hopelessness, as he aimlessly ran through the forest, tripping over roots, and trying not to get whacked by branches. Barely five minutes in and he had already started prepping and throwing a pity part through his sprinting. It felt like his head was being knawed on by worry, like a diver who jumped off a cliff and hit a whirlpool.
How was he supposed to get that bell from Sakura? Yes, he wanted to succeed with this training but it was human nature to become encased by fear. Who would blame him? There were certain students who just struck a chord of nerves and made him go haywire, and Sakura was one of them. He had to be intimidated by the girl who would fiercely stare down a villain that could send All Might flying with a single attack. She was blindingly fast and had enough power to knock out a supervillain, he felt ice on his back at the thought of what those punches felt like.
His heart was banging on his ribs while he stumbled through the forest without any sense of direction, only uncertain purpose.
'I just have to hit her with my quirk,' If he could find a way to stun her for a few minutes, he could collect the bell and make his escape because he didn't know what kind of temperament she was going to have in the aftermath.
The ethical conundrum of harming girls, could not be applied if he wanted to survive this training. Denki knew that much.
Nature's blur was a consecutive color palette of greens, browns, and oranges to complement the coming season. So when Denki got a flash of pink in his eyes, he pulled the brakes on his sprint. Ducking behind a tree, he peered closer, and indeed, Sakura was standing with her back to him in the distance. She didn't show any signs of noticing him, and there was no one else around either.
Due to the unpredictable nature of his quirk, and lacking control, the conditions could not be more favorable for Denki than right now.
"I know you're there," His skin felt like it had bristled in the same manner of a cat when they were startled. Of course, she would notice him. Denki gave his knees a hard hit to urge them to stop trembling, as he came out of the bushes. He acted hastily, perhaps in his best attempt to subdue his worry.
He came out but stayed, "Are you going to try and attack from there?" Sakura asked folding her arms.
Denki forced a crooked grin, his hands shooting small sparks of voltage, "There's no one else here. So I don't have to hold back now!"
Sakura sighed, her shoulder slumping, but when she opened her eyes they had become so sharp Denki's skin felt sliced through. He couldn't help but be brutally aware of her every movement, no matter how casual, as she pulled at her gloves, no sign of any shields. "Let's review. You're able to discharge high levels of voltage from your body. With that million volts attack, you could keep your distance from me, and discharge your power to stun me. However; that move has a drawback and directly attacks your faculties. So even if you manage to stun me, you might just forget your initial target," The bell on Sakura's hip shook, "Then it'll become a battle of recovery, me from the stunning or you from your short circuit,"
For some reason, Denki became very aware of the sweat drop running down from his forehead to his chin, his lips pursed in an attempt not to tremble.
Sakura massaged the side of her neck, "I'm not fond of being shocked, do you understand?"
Denki unconsciously took a step back, then reached for his electrodisk. A recent add-on to his costume. The support item would allow him to make more controlled attacks when he attached them to a target. It had come in handy during the provisional licensing exam.
'Don't let her get to you,' He told himself. Denki had to resist the urge to work with his flight or fight response to activate his quirk and throw down all the cards. He didn't know if he was willing to risk racing against being braindead for a few minutes and Sakura's recovery time from the stun. It didn't occur to him at that time, that Sakura could avoid that attack altogether.
Then, Denki watched as she blinked in another direction, her sense of intimidation lost as if she could control that pressure. But he certainly felt lighter as his attention dragged away. She looked out in the distance. Then she was in the air. After tucking her knees under like she intended for a leapfrog, she jumped. Almost too high for him to lift his head towards.
'What is she doing?' Was this going to be some kind of aerial attack? Well, that was half right. Denki heard him before seeing him, but there was only one person in the whole class, or perhaps the entirety of UA, who would make an entrance so spectacularly.
Katsuki Bakugou.
He was like a missile with poor timing, his hands thrown behind to increase his momentum that held such intensity it was almost visible. He maneuvered through the air with far more control available to Sakura, he grabbed her collar, throwing his other hand directly in front of her face.
'Try and dodge this!' Katsuki thought as he felt his palms heat, before releasing an explosion that blackened the sky, and blinded Denki, who felt his throat go dry as the explosion vibrated through the air, rippling with heat and ash.
Was he insane for releasing an attack that powerful at point-blank range? "WE'RE NOT SUPPOSED TO KILL HER!"

The teachers who had gathered to watch the training had become very still after observing the scene.
Hizashi was perched on the edge of his seat, ready to fall off, "Hey, hey, hey!" His voice was growing louder, with the announcer's tone that he had the sports festival. "What was that?! Bakugou didn't even blink before releasing that attack! Shouta, what kinda ground rules did you lay out for the kiddos to feel free to hit each other with that kind of intensity?"
Admittedly, Hizashi was a little concerned, his energetic tone tempered with a hint of appreciation. He was not a fan of the idea of fully attacking comrades, especially the girls.
Shouta had his arms crossed, a faint frown made its way to his face. "Bakugou fought Haruno in the sports festival, and whenever they get into a scruff with each other, she is always the one to come out on top. He isn't reckless when it comes to using his quirk, he must've realized that Haruno is standing a different stretch than him and to reach it, he needs to go all out,"
Sekijiro held his chin, his moth limply turned downward. "That seemed like a reckless attack to me Aizawa. There will be dire consequences if there is an over-exertion of force."
While training to become heroes, they had been taught the importance of maintaining control of situations and avoiding excessive force because it would have a poor reflection on their image. There had to be a definitive line between heroes and villains. And this was one of the ways they had been taught to do so.
However, this reminder didn't deter Shouta. He had given his students many lessons on the topic, and they knew it well.
"It's not that he is being excessive, it's just that Haruno is that hard to handle,"
..
..
..
Denki was looking around, trying to peak through the smoke from his distance, his vision blurring as he strained them to identify the silhouette and realized that it was too bulky to be Sakura. 'Where did she go?' A new fright hit him at the thought of losing track of her. When you were hunting, you would not want to lose sight of your target. Especially if that target was dangerous enough to turn the tables on you from the shadows.
Katsuki waved his hand through the smoke, his swings moving as if he was gripping the material of ash and debris when he heard and felt a thud on the ground. He went to investigate, as his eyes landed on the object, the muscles on his face pulled tight and his expression darkened when he saw a small log instead of Sakura. He knew he had made contact with something in the air at the time, but he had misinterpreted what really happened.
He thought he was able to gain control of the situation by making sure to block all means of defense and escape from Sakura, in his territory, the air. However even then, where there was practically nothing for her to use, she managed to slip through his fingers with one of her unusual maneuvers that were rarely seen and also remained unexplained.
That was just another habit of Sakura Haruno that completely enraged Katsuki. This was a growing list that started from the first day they met.
'She did the same thing at the Sports Festival,' That hooked a thought into the back of his mind and tugged, pulling him to spin on his heel, both palms out with a blast already in their grasp before he released an explosion. Only to feel the trajectory change against his will, turning upwards, away from its intended target. Sakura was touching his wrist with a hand, her fingers barely seemed to brush against his gloves, yet it was enough force to redirect his blast. But Katsuki wasn't too upset, because he managed to predict her move.
She killed her presence before she ended up behind him. Izuku wasn't the only one who observed Sakura. Katsuku understood that she was not afraid to get close to an opponent because she could protect herself against most attacks. There was also a devious side to her seemingly straightforward fighting style that she masked.
"Well that's surprising Katsuki, how did you even guess I was here?" Her question was as if she deliberately wanted to pour oil into the fire just as it was about to go out.
"Idiot," Katsuki grunted, "You're not playing the same tricks on me and winning!" His knees bent forward, to prepare another attack, a bead of sweat trickling down his cheek. When they started, Katsuki didn't go over the forest terrain even though he was able, instead, he opted to go through and stay under the canopy. Why? It wasn't just to keep out of sight, but so that he could propel himself and complicate his movements. That drew more strength than it would be traveling through a clear sky. However, for all of Katsuki's skills, his quirk had a flaw. He needed to sweat to draw out the best of his ability and as the air continued to carry a chill, that affected the efficiency of his quirk.
"You sure about that?" He bristled at the way she smiled with a satisfied arrogance Katsuki couldn't stand. She jumped back like a gazel when Katsuki leaped forward. Sensing his determination to take the bell from her, she remained cautious of the position of his hands, swatting them away to keep herself from receiving any damage as well as keeping them away from the bell.
Once again her speed was outclassing his own.
"No point having all that power if you can't hit your target,"
Katsuki's voice cut through the forest as he roared like a beast, dripping with challenge as he threw his hand down, a fierce blast erupting from his palm. In one fluid motion, he propelled himself skyward, flipping to hang upside down for the briefest of moments. Then, with practiced precision, he angled himself mid-air, controlling the bursts with a disciplined strength to maneuver behind Sakura.
"AP Shot!" he roared, releasing a volley of tightly concentrated explosions directly toward her from only a few meters away. Unlike his more rambunctious attacks with an open palm, this one was calculated, focused, and compressed, tightened with strength like bullets though smaller, it was far more powerful.
But as the blasts hurtled toward her, Sakura barely blinked. She moved like fluid as she sidestepped each one with a speed that seemed almost supernatural, her movements a blur against the backdrop of trees.
With a single motion, she collected a kunai knife in her hand, the blame gleamed as she parried Katsuki's bullets, sending the explosions scattering around her, setting off like bombs when they finally landed on the ground. The force dissipated the forest floor, leaving little holes and billowing up clouds of dirt.
"Is that all you've got?" This was Katsuki's special move, which he had developed for the licensing exams.
The taunt did not go unrecognized by Katsuki, his expression twisting, but he wouldn't be blinded by his rage. He wouldn't let her bait him the same way she did at the sports festival. Even when she evaded his blasts as if they were nothing but paper, swatting them away as easily as one might brush aside a fly. He shoved down the flush of irritation.
"Oh, don't worry, I'm just warming up," he snarled, fists clenched, sparks crackling at his palms. "I don't care how fast you are, I'm getting that damn bell!"
Katsuki leaped forward, his body twisting mid-air as he launched himself into a new series of attacks, each blast angled to limit her escape routes. Sakura, however, met his every move with a flawless counter.
Despite the force and speed of Katsuki's attacks, she moved with unbreakable control, not a single misstep as she evaded, deflected, and closed the gap between them. She was within arm's reach now.
"Quit dodging and fight me!" He blasted forward in one final push, aiming to overwhelm her with speed, but at the last second, she twisted, and in a move too fast for him to counter, struck him with the blunt edge of her kunai.
"Get better combat skills and I will,"
Denki felt like one of the trees rooted to the ground. He couldn't do anything but stand in awe, gawking at the fight scene unfolding and he didn't want to add any of his corners into the mix for fear of being torn apart. They were wild and fast, with Sakura keeping pace with Katsuki. When it came to speed, combat ability, and instincts, Katsuki was usually standing at the top of the podium with the most balanced set. He could typically blast through any issues, and Denki knew if he interrupted, he would become one of those issues.
'Wait, Sakura's distracted right now,' She hadn't even looked over to check on Denki's position. Fully absorbed in the fight, attention is on Katsuki's onslaught. Denki gripped his pointer between his fingers, an idea fully formed. Before he could question it or find any holes in the plot he wrote, Denki threw the disk in the direction of the two, but further, so that it would land on a tree in the background of their battle. Then he watched and silently hoped for a stroke of luck to push them in the right direction.
'Sorry Bakugou, nothing personal but this is a battle royal,' Denk watched as Sakura hopped across the grounds, evading Katsuki's attacks. Katsuki was pressing her hard, driving her back, and if Denki played his cards right, she would soon be exactly where he needed her.
'All I have to do is wait,' Denki thought, his breath quickening, as he held his wrist, pointing his forefinger and thumb charged with his quirk. He wasn't the type to strategize, a weak point that the teachers informed him he had to work on to adapt and grow as a hero.
While his quirk had the power to take down many types of villains, including those with resistance to physical attacks, Denki had struggled in his battles mostly due to the drawback of his quirk, and lack of control he held over it.
Aizawa told him that he couldn't risk losing his faculties in the middle of a rescue or fighting with a villain because that offered too many opportunities to change the tied of the situation. Denki, like a lot of his classmates, had only been concerned with the degree of power a quirk had to offer, rather than how to adapt them in situations and turn them to his favor.
What he was doing right now wasn't exactly heroic, waiting in the shadows like this, but he was adapting to his circumstances. If he couldn't get directly into a fight to win, then he wouldn't do that.
Ahead of him, Katsuki pushed closer to Sakura. He was no longer keeping a distance which was a risky move, but Katsuki realized that Sakura wasn't taking an offensive position yet. He wasn't sure if this was some sort of play she had written out to mess with him. But he needed to get her off balance just once to pull her down and then he could take the bell. Coming at her with a barrage of blasts, to knock her off her feet. Her statue was the only advantage he had over her, and he was going to use it eventually.
'She's not some invisible force,' He reminded himself. She was just as human as the rest of them and if someone as mighty as All Might could fall, then so could she. He just had to find a way to knock her down before she decided to bare her fangs. Because when that happened, he wouldn't get out unscathed.
THAT'S ALL FOLKS! Hope you enjoyed this chapter and Remember to stay strong!
