Chapter 50: Chapter 050: He Was Simply Arrogant Enough to See Victory as a Natural Byproduct
Teiko Middle School's hellish training finally entered a recovery and adjustment phase one week before the Tokyo District preliminaries.
During that time, Shigure Akihito successfully completed his first player attribute upgrade. After carefully comparing the stats, he ultimately chose to advance Nobunaga Kiyota.
From D to C rank, all of Nobunaga Kiyota's attributes increased by 6 points.
And for Shigure Akihito himself, when he tallied the highest values among all the players he had unlocked so far, his current attributes became:

The effect of this rank-up was obvious, Kiyota's C-rank stats had essentially given Shigure a well-rounded boost across the board.
This made Shigure Akihito even more excited for the upcoming Nationals.
Soon after,
The Tokyo District Preliminaries kicked off.
Shigure stood near the front of the Teiko lineup, with Coach Naoto Sanada leading them into the arena. At this moment, they were still in the player's tunnel.
As usual, just before stepping onto the court, Coach Sanada turned around and had the team gather in a circle.
"Tokyo's number one seed should naturally be within reach,"
"But don't get cocky."
"And don't forget, "
"What's our ultimate goal?"
Following that, Sanada and Captain Masaki Ōkura extended their hands into the center.
One by one, all the starting players, including Shigure and Nijimura, placed their hands in.
Ōkura shouted loudly:
"AHH!!"
"Our goal is, "
The rest of the team followed in unison:
"National Champions!!"
"National Champions!"
"National Champions!"
This squad of fierce Teiko players, in their signature white uniforms, radiated an intense will to win.
That powerful spirit echoed from the player's tunnel, reaching all the other teams ahead and behind, stirring the atmosphere even before Teiko set foot on the court.
And then,
They stepped out.
As Shigure Akihito emerged into the arena, the bright overhead lights immediately burst into view.
Ahead of him,
The rhythmic thump of basketballs,
The squeak of sneakers on polished floors,
The cheers of school cheering squads.
All of it surged toward him at once!
It was overwhelming.
Having never participated in such a large-scale, official event before, Shigure felt as if he'd been struck by lightning. He hadn't expected that even a regional prelim would draw so many teams, or pack so many spectators into the stands.
And beside him, even Nijimura Shūzō, despite trying to hide it, was visibly excited. After all, he was just a first-year too.
That's when Nijimura suddenly heard a soft exhale from beside him, followed by a quiet murmur:
"Our first championship as first-years... starts here."
Nijimura had always sensed it.
This teammate, Shigure Akihito, had an unusual calmness on the court, one that almost seemed detached from winning itself.
Sometimes, he seemed more obsessed with matchups, situations, tactics, even stats, rather than the outcome of a game.
Like,
In some scrimmages, he was strangely fixated on blocking shots.
At other times, he'd be disinterested before tipoff, but something about the opposing team would catch his attention, and he'd suddenly explode into action, racking up points like a man possessed.
It was as if,
By doing these things, he was discovering something more important than winning.
Since joining Teiko, their time together had been relatively smooth, and Nijimura had grown more and more convinced,
That Shigure Akihito's view of victory...
Was different.
To him, victory was just a byproduct of chasing something else.
A natural outcome.
Almost arrogant.
And yet... somehow, it worked. He just kept getting stronger.
Nijimura: "…"
From the moment I realized how strong I was,
From the moment I understood that as long as I worked hard, I could go even further,
Wouldn't it be boring if I were the only one?
Nijimura glanced sideways at Shigure Akihito, who wore an expression of pure anticipation.
"Hah…"
This is gonna be good.
Facing a strong opponent…
That's when it really gets exciting.
End of chapter...
