"Good Morning, Wizards and Gentlemen; if you're standing, I suggest you take a seat because the news I have to share will make your head spin. Multiple reputable sources have confirmed that the Ministry sent out an owl to every Head of House in Wizarding Britain last night. But no one expected that the letter would announce the emergence of a new House. That's right, folks, another magical lineage has ascended to noble status, but this story is far from over. My sources have also confirmed that the newest member of Wizengamot is only sixteen years old.
That's right! Thane Fae, previously known as Thane Carter, is a muggle-born in their second year at Hogwarts! And if you're fuming now, get ready for this: House Fae has been granted the title of Noble and Most Ancient.
For those living under a rock, there are only four other active Noble and Most Ancient Houses. House Longbottom, House Greengrass, House Malfloy, and House Weasley.
These four houses make up the majority of the votes in Wizengamont, meaning they often keep each other in check, with House Longbottom and House Weasley going against House Greengrass and House Malfloy.
But now, with a new seat added to Wizengamot, the delicate scales of power have been thrown out of balance. The next council is set to meet in January, and I have no doubt everyone will be tuning in to see how things play out.
That's all for now Rita Skeeter signing off!"
Thane closed the newspaper and set it aside as the enchanted video in the paper stopped playing, returning to a black-and-white picture of the blonde-haired reporter. Pulling back on his sleeve, Thane revealed the silver watch strapped to his wrist with a length of green dragon leather as he checked, "I guess I should make my way over."
---
Thane tried his best; he really did, but even after all his lessons with Thalion, Thane couldn't help but feel a twinge of annoyance as he sat down. The combined whispers and eyes on him threatened to drown Thane, though for once, he couldn't blame his classmates as they had a more than reasonable to mutter and stare.
'I invited this on myself, a necessary sacrifice. Though I hope it doesn't last for long,' Thane thought to himself as he let out a soft sigh and tried to tune out the countless conversations gossiping about him. It was even worse than before, as Thane's hearing had become several degrees more sensitive after becoming a Fae. Though he could adjust the frequency, his ears could pick up on it, and after a moment, Thane let out a sigh of relief as the background noise went from near deafening to a faint albeit constant murmur.
Though his hearing had been adjusted, Thane became aware of another noise that was almost certain to bring him just as many headaches. A second later, the seat across from him was suddenly occupied by a face that Thane had seen many times but had never exchanged a word with.
"Hello, I'm-"
"Daphnene Greengrass, daughter of Evelina Greengrass, Head of the Noble and Most Ancient House of Greengrass," Thane answered before the girl could finish, "We've had every single class together last year....it would be rather remarkable if I didn't know your name. Though the question is...did you know mine before your mother told you to make friends?"
"H-how dare you-" Daphne started, a haughty look briefly flashing across her eyes before she cut herself off and forced her lips to bend into a pleasant smile, "Of course, I knew your name. I doubt there's anyone in our year who doesn't know it. You suddenly disappeared without a trace; not even Dumbledore could locate you. Though I think I speak for everyone when I say that no one expected you to return in such a...shocking manner."
Thane stared across at Daphne for a moment, taking in every detail. On the surface, Daphene seemed to be a perfect example of high nobility raising, with perfect posture, a bright, inviting smile, and looks that would one day blossom with maturity. Thane could easily see through her facade. He did not doubt that Daphne's parents had taught her how to navigate through high society,
But before Thane, Daphne had always been at the top of any social climate, with the only ones matching her status being sworn allies or enemies. This meant she had no idea how to negotiate with an equal party, especially as the one seeking to curry favor with the other.
Thane smirked and leaned back in his chair. "To save the both of us some useless back-and-forth, how about you just tell me why your mother sent me here?"
"I have no idea-" Daphne started, but Thane interrupted her with a sigh as he stood up to move seats, "Wait!"
Daphne shouted as she lunged across the table to grab the hem of Thane's robes. Pausing, Thane purposely looked down at Daphne's offending hand, which quickly retreated as a furious blush spread across her cheeks, "Just sit down and be quiet...please."
Daphne almost seemed to force out the last word, and Thane was tempted just to walk away, but being petty wasn't worth more than what he could get out of a potential allegiance with one of the oldest families in Great Britain, 'I'll wait until the Malfoy's come groveling.'
Thane convinced himself as he sat back down and faced Daphne, "Ready to speak plainly."
Daphne glared at Thane before sighing, "As you guessed, my mother sent me here to make... friends."
"You've never had to do that before, have you?" Thane asked sarcastically with a mischievous smile as Daphne blushed darkened, "No, but I can say with confidence that this is beneath me!"
"I'm sure your mother will be pleased to hear that you failed at such a simple task," Thane replied, his smile still impish as he took great joy in Daphne's plight. "Tell me, is there anything she wants specifically...other than my votes in Wizengamot?"
Daphne growled, glaring at Thane with thinly veiled hatred, "I have no idea. Apparently, I don't need to concern myself with the finer details."
Thane smirked as Daphne was clearly quoting her own mother: "This is one of the few moments I don't envy those with parents."
Daphne sniffed dismissively, "I don't know what you're talking about. Parents are a nightmare—always telling you what you can and can not do."
"Oh, woes you," Thane replied with mock sympathy, "How do you live with two people who loved you enough not to give you up to some random stranger?"
Daphne opened her mouth to respond when the drum of countless footsteps echoed off the vaulted ceilings, and a small army of Hogwart's new first years entered the dining hall, their eyes wide with wonder as they panned across the room.
"It seems like we'll have to save this conversation for later," Thane spoke just as everyone in the room stood up and started to cheer and clap, signaling the start of the Sorting Ceremony.
