Chapter 231: Rumours
The Academy had only a limited amount of information about the civilization that lived on the other side of the doorway that could only be opened with the keys.
Even that information was only learned thanks to the rare few survivors that had managed to return alive in the past.
For a world that was even more vast than their own words, the amount of that world's hierarchy that the Academy had managed to learn, was no different than a small glimpse into that world.
The history that the Academy had managed to learn wasn't even enough to fill a hundred pages in the books that were delivered to the students.
That's why, this was called a suicide mission, as well as one which decided the future equation between Chronos and the Academy.
The students that were crossing the portal to the other world, didn't just have to guard against the descendants of Chronos, but they also had to survive in the other world, and return with not only more valuable information but also the treasures of artefacts that they could find.
The success and failure was decided based on the value that the students were able to retrieve from the other side. But it wasn't as if the artefacts or treasures were lying on the streets.
The aim of the entire mission was written only on the last page of the book. The mission was for the students to assimilate in the world, and if possible get close to the major families in the other worlds.
The mission was for them to eventually steal the most valuable item that they possibly could. But the other world was also aware of their identities, since they had already infiltrated those places a few times in the past.
That was precisely why it was called a deadly mission, where not even one of them might return alive. If Jeskirin wasn't confident about her daughter's abilities, he never would've sent her for this mission.
"Did you know about the existence of that realm?" Elias asked Astralious, walking through the corridors of the battleship.
He was quite fascinated by the existence of a place that even the Upper Realm couldn't harm. It was called an ancient civilization by the people of the upper realm who knew about their existence.
It was the land of death in the eyes of the Academy, but it was also the most treasured land, which contained items that even someone like Freya might drool over.
It was even said that the other realm possessed things like the awakening stones, from the world that had long been destroyed.
"It was the first time I heard anything like this. An ancient civilization that might even be stronger than the Upper Realm's combined forces? If that is true, then it is truly incredible."
Astralious was just as amazed as anyone else who has learned about this civilization for the first time. The only problem was that the information that they had managed to learn was limited.
All they knew was that the other civilization spoke the same language as them, but their writings were different. Even the Academy couldn't decipher their writings, despite a few students in the past bringing out a few scrolls.
The book did contain a rough map of the other world, but it was an extremely crude map that was far from helpful. It was as if someone had drawn it based on the rumours or stories that they had heard on the other side.
There was even a warning written under the map that it might not be accurate, suggesting the students to not foolishly believe in its accuracy. It was only a map for reference, and nothing else.
Fortunately, even though the lines in the map might not be accurate, it did mention the existence of the Empires that had divided the land.
The borders of the Empires might not be accurate, but their names were more or less correct. At least unless a big change had occurred on the other side in the last few years.
Elias stepped out of the battleship that had landed on a red planet that had a heavy smell of burnt coal. He thought that he was going to see some people from his family, especially since the Academy had sent a battleship here.
Surprisingly, the planet appeared to be completely abandoned, and his family hadn't sent anyone. Elias found it slightly hard to believe. Did Dreke's mother actually give up on him?
Was she really going to let him enter the other realm, from where he might never return. If he didn't return, didn't it mean Dreke wasn't going to return either? It felt slightly unreal.
Other than the youngsters, there were only Freya and Jeskirin in this barren land. The two of them were staring blankly in the distance, waiting for something.
"It should be the time." Freya raised her hand, and summoned the key. She thrust the key forward, like a sword cutting through empty air.
Jeskirin also did the same, matching her timing. The two keys started shining. The light gradually grew stronger, forming a mysterious portal that was filled with strange energy. There was a heavy scent of blood that shadowed the burnt smell of this world.
Freya and Jeskirin observed the portal, to ensure that there was nothing wrong with it. Freya even tried using her abilities to send a small attack to the Portal, but just like the past, even her attack failed to pass through the barrier as her strength had surpassed the limit of the barrier.
"Still as hard as ever for us to pass through it. We can only rely on the younger ones." Jeskirin stepped aside, and turned to the youngsters.
"I suppose you have already learned everything that you were supposed to know? There is nothing more for me to explain. Just remember your mission."
He didn't offer any words of encouragement, even though his own daughter was about to enter. He might not be confident about others, but he was extremely confident about his daughter's skill.
Her abilities were truly incredible, and could kill anyone. If she wouldn't survive in the other world, then who would?
His daughter didn't wait for any words of encouragement either. She silently entered the portal, without any hesitation. The others from Chronos also entered, showing that they weren't afraid of the civilization.
This was an opportunity for them to achieve something that could leave their names in the annals of history.
"Try to return alive." Freya said to the Academy students, almost making Elias cringe at her false sympathy.
"We won't disappoint the Academy!" The Seniors puffed up their chests, and stepped inside the portal. Even though they had read the stories about the other civilization, they thought that most of it was an exaggeration.
They were confident in their skills. After all, they had trained throughout the years for just this kind of thing.
After every student of the Academy had entered, only Elias was left behind. He took a deep breath, and also stepped forward, stopping merely a step before the portal.
"I wish I could have killed you myself. Regretfully, I can't stoop to such a low level as to kill you personally," Jeskirin told Elias, who raised his head. "I wish you a good death, you cursed existence."
Elias didn't say anything in response. Even though he was reckless, he didn't want to ruin an opportunity to explore the other side.
"I hope you don't blame me too much," Freya also said. "For the future of the Academy, I had no choice in the matter. If you can actually return alive, I will give you extra rewards as an apology."
Elias had a lot of things in his mind that he wanted to tell the two of them. In the end, he only said one thing before stepping into the portal.
"I don't think you can afford the reward I might want."
Freya frowned, and wanted to ask what reward he was talking about. But it was too late, and he had already entered the portal, disappearing inside the void.
"Even at death's door, he is still so arrogant. Does he really think he is Aliath?" Jeskirin raised a brow, almost scoffing at Elias's last words. "Speaking of Aliath, have you heard any news about him? Is his corpse found yet?"
"Even if I heard anything about him, do you think I would tell you?" Freya rolled her eyes.
"So you don't know either." Jeskirin could already guess the answer from her reaction. "It seems like you're no better than me. All we know are some vague rumours. What's funnier is that a certain rumor says that he is still alive, and hiding within..."
He looked towards the portal, shaking his head lightly. "Some fools really love to exaggerate the rumours as much as they can. As if he could even enter that place with his strength, even if he had a key."
