Chapter 439: The Truth Behind the Incident, The 500,000 Fruit Plate
Europe, Austrian Capital, Vienna.
As Luo An's interactions with Javari grew more frequent, he noticed that the latter was becoming increasingly easier to talk to.
Especially after Javari had failed to outdrink Luo An, was bested in a shooting contest, and was defeated in a fist fight; and upon hearing about Luo An's ludicrous gambling skills from Mrs. Hanover and Caroline, Javari's attitude improved even more.
Now, the relationship between Javari and Luo An seemed more like that of old friends.
While out drinking, Javari, stubbornly claiming that he had let Luo An win those previous contests, boasted that ten Luo Ans combined couldn't have bested him in his youth.
Luo An, unruffled, chuckled and then gestured to the waiter to replace all the red wine on the table with vodka.
"..."
Upon seeing this, Javari's eyes instantly bulged, and he gave Luo An a sideways glance.
He had realized during this time that not only was Luo An a cunning and agile little fox, but he also had a thick skin, was petty, and somewhat scheming.
Choosing to ignore the vodka-filled glass Luo An handed to him, Javari picked up a piece of fruit from the table, stuffed it into his mouth, and asked while eating:
"How have you and Mona been these past few days? Have you noticed anything amiss?"
"No."
Luo An shook his head. He and Mona had been touring various European countries these past days, experiencing local customs and enjoying culinary delights.
Seafood paella in Spain, cream stewed vegetables and seafood in Belgium, and volcanic grilled meat cooked by the erupting magma near a volcanic restaurant—all these had left a deep impression on Luo An and Mona.
However, Javari wouldn't ask such a question for no reason, so Luo An put down his glass and asked:
"What happened?"
"Remember that mole?"
After swallowing the fruit in his mouth, Javari calmly explained the ins and outs of the whole affair to Luo An.
Javari, 54 years old, has been risking his life and working for the CIA for over 30 years.
A few years ago, due to Jacques Jon (Chapter 115) and some other issues that left him irritable, as well as gradually getting older and wanting to spend his remaining years with Mrs. Hanover, Javari had submitted a retirement request to the CIA headquarters.
The CIA headquarters did not reject Javari's request but instead gave him one final mission involving Brenekoff, promising that after he completed this task, he would be allowed to retire and enjoy the rest of his life.
But a guy named Ross had set his sights on Javari because of this matter.
Ross was a colleague from the European region who provided logistical support for certain missions Javari was executing, ranking slightly higher than Javari within the CIA.
Having worked in the CIA for so many years, Javari naturally followed the agency's tradition and secured a substantial retirement fund for himself by various means.
Ross didn't know the exact amount, but understanding Javari, he knew it wouldn't be a small sum.
Thus, Ross tampered with the mission files, leading to Javari's failure and allowing Brenekoff to get hold of the account number and password Javari had kept close to his chest.
Before executing this mission, Javari had made some contingency plans. Regrettably, all those precautions were eliminated by Ross, who knew him well.
Just in case, Ross had also planted a fake file in the computer of that safehouse, aiming to use this trap to get rid of any backup plans of Javari's he might have missed.
As for Caroline, Ross was aware of her existence. He did not harm her and even mailed the severed hand to her with the intent of using Caroline to find out if Javari had any contingencies left and then eliminate them together.
However, what Ross never anticipated was that Caroline would find someone as incredible as Luo An.
Out of caution and prudence, and because he was worried about exposing himself and Mona, Luo An had acquired three fake identities for the trio right from the federation, disguising themselves as different people.
For all ten fingers of the three, Luo An had especially crafted fake finger cots to prevent exposing fingerprints and drove through deep forests, smuggled their way into Canada, and finally entered Europe.
With Luo An's recent maneuver, Ross, who had a solid footing in Europe, completely lost track of Caroline.
Just then, the CIA had sent Perena and others to investigate the failure of the Javari mission, so Ross could only play along with them for now, diverting his attention away from Caroline.
And then... Luo An pressed on triumphantly with Caroline and Mona, following the clues, entering casinos, snatching people off buildings, and ultimately discovering leads on Javari.
At that moment, Ross was completely dumbfounded. By the time he came to his senses, he was furiously cursing while hastily reaching out to the Desert Lion Mercenaries to track and kill Luo An's group, to eliminate Javari.
But Luo An, like the legendary Ares, annihilated the group of mercenaries, and successfully rescued Javari from the bunker...
Had it not been for Luo An, Ross's plan to kill Javari, seize the wealth amassed by Javari over the years, and deceive CIA headquarters, would have a high chance of success. Caroline would also be discreetly dealt with by Ross after some time, leaving no trace behind.
Unfortunately for Ross, Luo An gave him a huge surprise that he didn't seem to like very much.
"..."
After listening to this narrative, Luo An's expression did not change as he picked up a pineapple slice from the table and stuffed it into his mouth, his eyes fixated on Javari, he asked:
"What did you mean when you asked if Mona and I noticed anything unusual these past few days?
You didn't call us back to tell me that Ross isn't dead and has escaped from you, did you?"
"That's not the case."
Javari shook his head. He'd been working at the CIA for so many years and wasn't inept; Ross understood him, and he understood Ross just the same. Thus, it didn't take much effort for Javari to find Javari and send him to hell to repent.
Ross didn't have any friends, had never married, had no relatives or children, so when he died, he just died. No one would specifically seek to avenge him.
Feeling slightly relieved, Luo An had thought that this story would follow the old-time novels where after defeating the lesser villain, a bigger one would emerge, and the back-and-forth would continue for dozens of chapters.
"So..."
Swallowing the fruit in his mouth, Luo An questioned:
"Why did you call Mona and me back here?"
"I called for Mona's return, not yours," Javari replied, glancing sideways at Luo An. If Mona wasn't always glued to Luo An, he wouldn't have asked to call them both back.
Luo An paused at his words and, without saying much more, took the fruit plate in front of Javari and placed it in front of himself.
"..."
Javari looked speechless and set aside his fork, indicating that Ross had previously gotten a set of account numbers and passwords from him and took his money.
Now that Javari had escaped the bunker and found Ross, what goes around comes around, and he managed to get hold of Ross's retirement funds in return.
Javari called Mona back to Europe with the intention of handing this money over to Mona and Caroline.
Hearing this, Luo An's eyes narrowed slightly as he extended his now empty hand in front of Javari and asked:
"What about mine?"
"What yours?"
Javari was taken aback for a moment, then realized what Luo An was referring to.
He slapped away Luo An's hand and pointed at the fruit plate in front of Luo An, saying:
"This is your share, this fruit plate, five hundred thousand."
"...Do you think this is a loaf of German bread from before World War II?"
