Chapter 162: Mark of the Damned (1)
Everyone kept looking at the dark, hoping to see a silhouette or hear something again, but it was like nothing was there now.
For a few minutes, there were no sounds or visuals even when Lucas had activated his perceptive eyes.
"If my perceptive eyes were higher level, then I could have seen the thing already I think."
"What can't be done, can't be done, Lucas. Let's just leave."
"..." Lucas looked in the dark and a part of his being told him that he was missing something, that he had to fight this thing out of no reason other than how it messed with him and Mike's brain.
"Lucas, it's not worth risking our safety over something we can't even see or understand," Sandra's voice carried a mix of caution and worry. She had seen the creature with a better perspective than Lucas.
"I could feel suffocation from this one, and I meet a lot of ghosts but this one is beyond me. It's like the evilest thing I have ever seen." She continued in order to get inside everyone's brain to move forward.
But Lucas remained silent, his mind working furiously. He felt an inexplicable urge to confront whatever had invaded their minds, a determination to fight back against its influence.
"Lucas, we're with you, whatever you decide," John said, his voice a blend of support and confidence.
The group stood there, the tensions high.
In the midst of uncertainty, Lucas's thoughts raced. He recalled the feeling of fear and helplessness when the voice spoke to him, the sensation of being controlled by an external force. He couldn't shake the belief that there was more to this situation than meets the eye.
'We really can't do anything huh...' Lucas thought and he was right.
The creature could not be even seen much less they could confront it.
Lucas knew by fact that things were more serious than the one in the undead dimension. There, it was possible to look at the ones he had to kill but here, it was some sort of a mind game.
The thing in the dark was trying to get them inside the dark in order to do something to all of them and Lucas knew it was not something good anyway. Enjoy more content from My Virtual Library Empire
"We will leave. Mike, can you run now?" Lucas asked the question to the one who had just got up on his feet again, Haley had already fixed him mostly and MIke could now see the situation before them.
A talk with him made them all realize that the main culprit for being manipulated by getting debuffs was really by getting inside the darkness. For Mike, when he panicked and accidentally went inside the darkness, he felt a very odd feeling.
At first, it was heart-stopping fear but then, it became some sort of desire on his own. His mind seemed to have started to daze and now he had started hearing things.
According to him, Mike couldn't tell what the sounds were but he was slightly sure that it was the group shouting his name and screaming.
Yet just after he realized this, he started hearing something more prominent, and in a single second, he knew it was his dead wife calling for him.
Mike lost his composure and just started marching without caring that he couldn't look at anything, it was like it didn't matter whether he opened his eyelids or not.
That was when he met Jerry in a half-sleep state and he remembered nothing about there confrontation that Jerry told him about.
"Yeah..." Mike responded with a slightly distant expression and Lucas nodded in response.
"Sarah, start running, we will get out of this shit hole quick now."
"Alright."
Sarah with the fireball in her hand started to jog in order to let everyone get accustomed to the speed with time.
For a minute, they just jogged but it was still a better distance coverer.
Until Sarah started increasing her pacing, she became fast which made the group reluctantly or desperately start running at the same pace too.
Ella and John felt a bit weird about running as they hadn't done it for a few years on Earth, and the weirdest part was that they felt like they could run a marathon without trouble with this kind of strength and level.
Soon 10 minutes went by, and the group didn't falter. By this time, Manny would have already complained but with the situation so scary, everyone was just desperate to get out alive.
Time went by at its usual speed yet no one was able to tell what it was at the moment or how much they had already traveled.
"Hmm... something is wrong."
"Again? What is it this time?" Jerry asked in between deep breathing, they had already traveled a lot.
"I think that the more we travel, the more my senses are becoming bad," Bill stated while running, he was like an assassin, his steps couldn't be heard properly due to his skills, and he was very fast on his feet when the two daggers were in his hand.
"Bullshit, I don't believe that." Jerry snorted and just kept running with his shield on his back where it was supposed to be.
Lucas didn't say anything while he kept on running just like everyone.
As they continued to run, the surroundings seemed to blur together, the darkness becoming a never-ending expanse. The faint glimmer of hope they had when they started running was slowly fading, replaced by a sense of futility.
Minutes turned into an hour, and still, there was no sign of the exit. Mike's steps were heavy, his mind consumed by the sound of his dead wife's voice. He felt as though he was walking in a dream as memories and emotions clouded his thoughts.
Lucas's perceptive eyes continued to scan the darkness, his senses alert for any changes. He couldn't shake the feeling that they were missing something crucial, something that could lead them to safety yet he couldn't find it at all.
His skill was also used in desceetion as, if his mana were to get low, he did not have the privilege to drink the mana potion as it was deemed worthier to give to Sarah who was the only source of light for the whole group in this mind swallowing darkness.
"I can't keep going," Sandra's voice broke through the heavy breathing. She slowed down, her hands on her knees as she gasped for air.
Lucas turned to her, his expression grave. "Sandra, we can't stop now. We have to keep moving."
"I know, but I can't," she replied, her voice strained. "My body... it feels like it's giving up."
Lucas's gaze shifted to the others. They were all panting, their faces had exhaustion and frustration written all over.
The relentless running had taken its toll, and even their supernatural abilities seemed to be waning in the face of this relentless darkness.
"We can't give up," Lucas said firmly, his voice carrying a hint of desperation. "We have to find a way out of this."
"Lucas is right," Sarah chimed in, her fireball flickering slightly as her energy waned. "We've come too far to stop now."
John and Ella nodded in agreement, their determination reignited by Lucas's words. They had faced countless challenges together, and this would be no different.
As they continued to run, Lucas's mind raced. There had to be a solution, a way to break through this endless darkness and find their escape.
Another half an hour passed but Lucas and the others still ran to the best of their abilities.
"Fuck! How much more?"
"Mike, shoot in the front and all the directions!" Lucas ordered that MIke obliged in a second.
He shot in all directions, the bullets made out of the fire went further and further and nothing happened.
BAM!
Lucas's eyes darted to the left, there, in front of him, a blast was taking place right in front of his eyes.
"M-MOve there!"
"You can't go anywhere! I command you to stay here!" The hoarse voice surprisingly shouted from the darkness behind them.
Yet Lucas did not have the time to take his words to any heed. He had actually found something that could get him out of there if things were to be all good.
The figure in the dark exuded a lot of bloodlust in the hope that even a single person gets left behind yet everyone ran.
Nobody said anything but everyone understood the assignment, they needed to run or else, anyone could get left behind.
After a single minute, Lucas saw something with his perceptive eyes, before the dark even faded, he saw a glimpse of something like a gate.
"STOP!" Lucas said which made them all stop frantically.
"What?"
Everyone had desperation written all over and they kept looking at Lucas with various emotions.
"We're here..." Lucas looked in the front, his eyes were glowing.
While no one else could look at it, Lucas was already staring at it with a grin.
It was a pitch-black gate with a lot of darkish aura seeping out of it.
