Chapter 18: Chill Life Midst Chaos, drinking tea.

Kuyogasaki High School

Countless students poured onto the school grounds as the start of the first period approached.

Ignoring the gazes directed his way, Ren and Ai entered the school and headed toward Class 3-A.

Upon entering the classroom, Ren sighed immediately; almost the entire class turned their heads, glaring at the two who had arrived together.

After nodding in greeting a few times and politely declining a couple of group lunch invitations, Ren finally reached his desk near the back of the class.

Sitting at his desk, Ren turned to greet the long-legged beauty seated to his left.

"Ohayo~, Utaha," he said.

Hearing her name, Utaha lowered her book and glanced to her right.

Seeing the smiling face quietly observing her, she coughed a couple of times into her fist, trying to compose herself while maintaining her proud demeanor.

Cough, cough.

"Ohayo~, Rich-kun," she replied, tightening her grip on the book with each passing moment. The longer she looked at him, the harder it became to keep from blushing.

'Hold, hold, hold,' she silently repeated in her head.

"Oh, right, Utaha, you mentioned wanting to observe my interactions with Ai or something, for gathering material?" Ren probed.

Regaining her composure, Utaha nodded, her expression suddenly sharpening.

"Umu~, Rich-kun, what are you planning to do after classes? If it's not too much trouble, could I tag along with you two?"

"Nah~, Ai and I usually just head home. Sometimes we make a quick stop to buy daily necessities or groceries," Ren said, lazily waving his hand as he described his typical routine in Japan over the past few months.

Utaha opened her notebook, jotted down a few notes, and tapped her pencil against the desk before asking again.

"Okay, let's go together after classes, then. Will you be having lunch on the rooftop today?" she asked, lowering her voice and leaning closer to Ren to ensure no one nearby could overhear her plans for the lunch break.

"Gomen ~, I was planning to go somewhere else today. Let's have lunch together another day, okay?" Ren replied, glancing at the two bombshells sitting behind them.

Hearing his response, Utaha nodded, sulking slightly. With a sigh, she turned her attention back to her book, once again immersing herself in the world of romance.

Ren turned his body backwards and said, "Ohayo~, Rias, Akeno."

He nodded and glanced at the two girls lounging behind their desks.

After his upgrades he had done in the car, he could now clearly sense that they were not human—or at least, he felt something unusual.

A faint energy radiated from them, low levels of power seeping from their bodies, likely because they were constantly suppressing the devilish abilities they possessed.

Taking a closer look and inspecting them with his upgraded Sharingan, Ren pierced through their outer layer and perceived the scale of their power more clearly.

'I don't yet know what to compare it to, but at least I don't feel any oppression from their energies, sitting right in front of them,' he thought.

Perhaps it would have been different if he had done the same the day before, but by exploiting his system from who knows where, Ren had skipped a few levels and became somewhat overpowered.

Akeno, noticing Ren's blank expression as he stared at her and Rias's figures, crossed her legs and subtly puffed out her chest.

"Fufufu~, hello, Ren-kun. Like what you see, hmm~?" she teased, crossing her arms under her chest and swaying her shoulders side to side.

Sitting next to her, Rias, oblivious to where Ren's gaze had lingered, also greeted him.

"Yo~, Ren-kun, what'cha up to this morning?" Rias smiled and leaned forward slightly, her chest brushing against the desk, causing it to shift under the pressure.

Ren snapped out of his trance, his eyes briefly caught by the mesmerizing movements in front of him, before quickly regaining his composure.

'Later...' he thought, shaking his head.

"Nothing much, Rias. I just wanted to ask if you and Akeno would like to have lunch with me and Ai. We didn't get the chance yesterday, so I thought I'd invite you now," Ren said, already anticipating their response. If he were correct, they would probably...

Rias glanced at Akeno, exchanging a quick nod, then turned back to Ren.

"Sure, Ren-kun! If you'd like, why don't you join us? We have a spot where Akeno and I usually eat lunch!" Rias said, her excitement evident as she seized the opportunity to learn more about this intriguing new student. She eagerly invited them to her clubroom.

Hayasaka Ai, who had been quietly listening to the conversation, shot Ren a questioning glance.

Noticing his maid pouting at the edge of his vision, Ren chuckled.

"No problem, let's go together," he said as he turned back around. At that moment, the classroom door opened, and their class teacher, Hiratsuka Shizuka, entered with a tired, visibly sleep-deprived expression.

"Alright..." she began, her voice carrying a familiar nagging tone as she addressed the young students.

---

Sound of melody announcing the end of the 4th period and the start of lunch break.

Ren stood up from his desk, stretched his body, and waited for Ai to retrieve their lunch from the classroom lockers at the back, where students typically stored their belongings.

Exiting the classroom side by side, Ren and Ai were joined by Rias and Akeno.

"Alright, let's go! We'll head to my club," Rias said, her excitement bubbling over as she turned and led the way.

As the four walked down the hallway, countless students stared and whispered to one another. The group—a pair of school queens, a cold and unapproachable beauty, and a mysterious new student—drew attention wherever they went.

After leaving the classroom area and entering the clubroom wing, they made a few more turns and stopped in front of a door bearing a sign that read Occult Research Club.

Rias turned to her guests and flashed a bright smile.

"Here we are! This is my pride and joy—welcome to my club!" She twisted the doorknob, opened the clubroom door, and skipped inside.

Ren followed behind Ai, entering last and closing the door behind him. He took a moment to observe the room.

The space was an unconventional blend of a traditional Japanese clubroom with an air of mystery and the supernatural. Two couches sat on opposite sides of the spacious room, with a tea table in the center.

On one couch sat a handsome young man with short blond hair and a mole beneath his left eye. Across from him, on the other couch, a petite girl with white hair and golden eyes nibbled on cookies from an open bag on the tea table. Her long bangs extended past her shoulders, with loose strands over her forehead and a short bob cut at the back.

Akeno, entering the room, headed straight to her tea set and began preparing drinks. Rias, meanwhile, grinned and turned to Ren and Ai.

"Hehe, welcome to the Occult Research Club! These are my club members. This is Yuuto Kiba, a second-year, and this is Koneko, our junior, currently in her first year," Rias explained with enthusiasm as she introduced them.

Ai glanced at the two figures, nodded, and said, "Hello, I'm Hayasaka Ai, Class 3-A."

Ren quickly sized up Kiba, then shifted his gaze, losing interest. His attention settled on the small, cat-like girl nibbling on snacks.

"Pleasure to meet you. I'm Hoshino Ren, same class and year as the others," he said with a smile. He approached Koneko, sat next to her on the couch, and Ai followed, settling comfortably beside him.

Yuuto Kiba, observing the two new guests in their usually quiet clubroom, offered a warm smile and welcomed them.

The much smaller white-haired girl, barely diverting her attention from her snacks, turned her head and said, "Nom nom~, hello, nom nom~." She glanced at Ren and Ai's faces before biting into another chocolate-covered cookie.

Ren nodded his head to Yuuto Kiba and, observing the silent girl beside him, asked.

"Rias, are these all of your club's members? I thought with your and Akeno's popularity, this club would have been packed during free time." Ren already knew the answer.

Rias, leaning against the back of her chair, replied, "Mmm~, there is one more member, but he is extremely shy, and usually just hangs out in the backroom of our club. Currently, it is just five of us, me being the president, and Akeno, vice-president."

Akeno placed a teacup in front of Rias, and, taking another pair of cups, served tea to Ren and Ai.

"Thank you, Akeno," Ren smelled the aroma of tea, and after a moment took a small sip. "Excellent, almost the same flavor I had back in Europe."

Ren praised the tea as he reminisced about all the drinks he had back in his mother's family's house.

"Oh, yeah, Shizuka sensei said you lived for two years in Europe, was it by any chance anywhere near Britannia?" Rias asked.

A regular person might have perceived it as a simple question, but Ren, aware of the ancient and secretive mage families that had long resided in the area, recognized that Rias was fishing for information about his possible roots.

"No, my mother is from Scandinavia, and I lived there to spend more time with my grandparents," Ren explained. "After finishing my third year here, I plan to attend a university in Tokyo and get a degree in Business, later working with my father."

Akeno's hands slightly trembled as she took a sip from a teacup. Rias, meanwhile, couldn't help but think about Norse mythology and their gods.

"Hahaha~" she nervously laughed, scratched her head, "Right."

Ren smiled, noticing every small action they made, and shook his head.

"Well, I'm here now, back in Japan, isn't it better to drop formalities and just have a friendly chat?"

Akeno clapped her hands together, "I just remembered, Rias, this morning I tried making something with a new recipe, let's try it now."

Somewhat understanding that Ren didn't want to answer questions about his background, she decided to divert her president's attention.

After all present members of the club and their two guests opened their lunch boxes, they spent the next 20 minutes eating while chatting about hobbies, news, food, and all things that young adults like to talk about.

Finishing their food and saying goodbye to two younger people, Ren and Ai headed out of the Occult Research Club and went back to class.

Watching as two figures went out and closed the door, all four of them sat, not saying a word.

Rias was the first to break the silence.

"It might not be as simple as we thought, Akeno. Does that mean Ren-kun might have a connection to some Norse gods?"

Yuuto Kiba, only now catching up, "Oh, right, I felt that too, Hoshino-san doesn't seem to be a regular human," he said as silent Koneko followed with a nod.

Akeno went around to stand behind Rias and looked outside the window.

Two figures were walking on the school's grounds, through an open, green outside area that was located right in the middle of all the school's wings.

"I don't think so, President. Maybe we should ask your brother? If anyone with a connection to Norse deities came to Japan, it is as far as I know, his and Serafall's jurisdiction, they should know something."

Akeno mused, turning around and starting to gather tea cups and cleaning the club room.

Ria and slided down her chair and started pouting.

"Politics are sure boring, huh?"
