Ethan moved quickly but silently, keeping a careful distance as he tailed the cloaked figure.
They weaved through the narrow alleys of Arendelle, occasionally glancing back. Ethan stayed just far enough behind to avoid detection, slipping between crates and sticking to the shadows cast by tall, snow-dusted buildings.
Whoever it was moved with purpose—light on their feet, practiced.
Definitely not a merchant. Not a peasant either.
But just as he turned the corner into a narrow alley that sloped downward between two worn stone buildings… the figure vanished.
Ethan froze.
No footsteps. No creaking wood. Just an empty, snow-covered path and the distant sound of bells chiming in the town square.
"Damn it," he whispered.
He moved forward slowly, eyes scanning every crack, window, and shadow.
Nothing.
He sighed and leaned back against the wall, running a gloved hand through his hair.
"Who the hell was that?" he thought. It wasn't the first odd thing since arriving—and it definitely wouldn't be the last.
With no answers and the system still quiet, he had little choice but to shift gears.
Survive. Integrate. Investigate.
Ethan left the alley and returned to the bustling streets, still packed with people preparing for the coronation. Banners fluttered, shops displayed their finest goods, and laughter echoed through the air.
And then he saw her.
Anna.
She was in the square again, this time holding a basket filled with cloth and fresh bread, talking cheerfully to a vendor.
She wore a dark green skirt and a navy cloak over her shoulders, her auburn hair in twin braids. The way she smiled while talking, her nose scrunching slightly—it was exactly as he remembered from the movie, but somehow… more real.
Ethan hesitated. It wasn't often he approached people so directly—especially after the whirlwind his life had become.
Still…
He walked toward her. Quietly.
"Hey," he said casually.
Anna turned, eyes lighting up with recognition. "Oh! It's you—Ethan, right?"
"That's right." He gave a short nod. "Didn't expect to see you again so soon."
"I live here," she said with a grin, then quickly added, "I mean, not right here, but you know—Arendelle."
Ethan smiled slightly. "Makes sense."
She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, shifting the basket in her arms. "So, are you going to the coronation?"
"Thinking about it," Ethan replied. "Still trying to find work, actually. I'm a bit… new."
Anna tilted her head, curious. "What kind of work?"
"I'm good with weapons. Hunting. Defense. That kind of thing."
"Like a royal guard?"
"More like a solo adventurer." He paused. "Freelancer, you could say."
Anna looked him over, her curiosity building. "You really are from far away, huh?"
"Farther than you'd believe," he said under his breath.
Anna suddenly brightened. "You know… maybe you should talk to Kai or Gerda. They're part of the castle staff. If anyone knows about jobs, it's them. Or—" she paused, eyes twinkling, "—you could just come to the coronation. Get to know people. It might help."
Ethan thought about it for a moment.
Anna was being kind. Honest. Maybe too trusting. But he wasn't sensing any ulterior motives. And right now, she was one of the few connections he had.
"I might take you up on that," he said finally.
Anna smiled again, her cheeks slightly red from the cold—or was it from something else?
"I should get going," she said. "Big day tomorrow. But I'll keep an eye out for you, okay?"
"Same here."
She turned and started walking down the street, but not before glancing back one last time.
Ethan watched her disappear into the crowd. He stood there for a few moments, alone in the cold.
"No money. No map. Trapped in another world. And now I'm getting invitations to royal events."
He shook his head and exhaled slowly.
"Just another day in the life."
He turned away from the square, heading toward the docks where work might be waiting—part of him now set on learning more about this world… and its people.
But most of all, he was beginning to realize something else:
This world wasn't going to let him stay in the background for long.
