Limitless Summoner: Rise of the Soul God

Chapter 127: Demons again

Trying to argue with that old hag was a losing battle. Ethan had learnt this a long time ago. So the next day, another task was added to his list, and that was to make more talismans. The plus point was he managed to learn a couple more spells, a protection mana barrier, and a minor teleportation.

He also learned something that he wasn't all that pleased about.

Love Talisman

The bestseller of the shop. Apparently, the old hag was famous for making these love talismans. This was what she had been peddling those old women, possibly scamming them.

The shocking part was that the love talisman was actually very close to the disguise spell. It worked in a very mysterious way. Some of it made the target feel confused and mentally vulnerable, and some of it made the caster appear more attractive.

The old hag had teased him about using one on him if he didn't deliver the talismans on time, and whenever Ethan thought about it, a chill ran down his spine. The old hag was dangerous.

He shook it off and started quickly arranging the runes. He got the work done in time and headed out to make the delivery runs. Most of the time, the old hag handed over the talismans personally, but sometimes on rare occasions, Ethan became the personal delivery boy.

Today was one of those days, and Ethan hurried along, quite impatient to finish the task and get back to his training. However, when he got onto the main street, he couldn't help but notice that the place was extra busy.

Ethan's pulse quickened as he wondered if this was somehow related to him. He was a wanted man with two charges. If they sniffed him out, then the ending wouldn't be a good one. He quickened his pace, wanting to get back into the house and lay low for the time being.

He crossed a couple of guards on the way who were busy chatting with each other. Thanks to his disguise spell, none of them bothered to look at him, but Ethan froze abruptly right on the street.

He did not purposely eavesdrop on their conversation, but he overheard them nevertheless. The two of them were discussing demons.

"I heard last night the city lord sent several men to guard the border towns."

"A lot of rumors are going around about demon attacks."

One of them finally noticed him standing simply. "Hey, what are you looking at, brat?" Continue your journey on My Virtual Library Empire

Ethan silently shook his head. "Nothing. Sorry, sir. I heard something about demons and was worried. Are we safe inside the city, sir?"

"Yes, yes. Your lazy ass is safe. Do you see demons roaming around here, boy? There is no need for you to panic. Even though the Lord knows you do not deserve it, we men try to take care of our city. We put our lives on the line and do the work while lazy asses like you can live in peace. Hmph."

The guard snorted in contempt and continued to walk away. Ethan did not linger around any longer as various confusing thoughts ran through his mind. He made his deliver and returned to the house as soon as possible.

The next item on the agenda was to water the plants, but he couldn't bring himself to do it. Was he really safe inside the city? Was he willing to hand over his safety to the likes of those guards? Those men would probably be the first to run away from an actual demon attack.

Ethan's breathing became labored, and without realizing it, he started having a panic attack. What the hell had he been doing all these days? Was he having fun playing house with the old hag, Lia, and Luna? How much longer was he going to do this?

Magic training was all fine, but his real strength was his summoning, and he hadn't progressed in that for weeks. Even with his mage training, he hadn't actually battled beasts or any other opponents. If things continued this way, he was bound to become weak. He needed to fight. He needed to level. He needed to get back in the game. Break time was over.

Just because there wasn't a target on his back now, it didn't mean he was safe. Besides, he did have a target on his back. Ethan snapped out of it and made a decision. He found the old hag sitting in her study, reading something and scribbling something.

"I will be gone for a few days. They will be staying here with you."

"Mmhmm. About time. You should take the next step forward. Cross into the next rank and come back."

Ethan nodded, a little surprised. He closed the door and walked when he heard the old hag's voice again. "Of course, when you come back, I need you working overtime to finish all the pending work. Don't think you can cheat me. I will find you, brat. You better get back on your own. Get back in one piece."

He paused for a moment and then smiled. He did not leave immediately. There was some planning to be done and some preparation.

Ethan spent the rest of the night in the underground workspace, crafting one talisman after another. When his mana ran out mid-battle, he could always use these as backups. So he could never have enough.

The next morning, Ethan gathered his few belongings and approached Lia and Luna. Both of them, still rubbing sleep from their eyes, looked up at him with puppy dog eyes.

But Ethan did not relent. He strictly asked them both to stay back. Lia still ran after him without Luna knowing. "Master, don't you need my buffs? I should come with you, please. Let me come."

"No. I will take you next time. If both of us leave, then Luna might end up wandering off on her own again," Ethan declared firmly, shaking his head. Lia could only watch him leave as she silently prayed in her heart.
