Chapter 776 Storm in the Night

There was no moon today, and the pitch-black waves undulated.

Once inside, there were no currents in the South Pacific, but any waves indicated a not-so-small weather front, a vast ocean swept by a powerful wind.

Last night the moon was more than half full, tonight it had vanished without a trace; this did not conform to the basic law of the moon's appearance, thus something else in the sky had covered it.

The only thing that could cover the moon in the sky was dark clouds.

Big winds, dark clouds, a slightly muggy air.

Any experienced sailor could easily tell that a storm was about to hit.

Bi Fang sat at the bow nibbling shark meat patties, sipping water from his wooden cup; he only dared to eat such an amount of food when he was well-hydrated. He had to eat; a tough battle lay ahead.

The sails had been lowered early on.

All around was pitch darkness, devoid of any light, impossible to determine direction.

The stars were not visible, everything else was a blur, one couldn't see one's hand in front of one's face.

Bi Fang did not dare to bet that unfurling the sails wouldn't blow him to some unknown place by chance, with good luck naturally like traveling thousands of miles in one night, but with bad luck, the efforts of several days might be wasted.

The atmosphere was eerily quiet, so much so that even the sound of Bi Fang eating meat was not heard, as somber as the calm before a battle, or rather, the calm before the storm. Oh, no, this was the calm before the storm.

[What should I do, I'm already panicking.]

[Don't panic, just hug Master Fang tightly.]

[I wish to have an adventure with Master Fang, to be held in his arms and comforted softly when facing danger (heart eyes), ah, I'm dead.]

[What a Mary Sue plot!]

[Now is the time for fantasies, bubbles are infinite.]

[Is there a possibility, I mean, a possibility, that Master Fang might consider you as emergency food (Dog's head)?]

[A case of shipwreck cannibalism, right?]

[Explain, what is this?]

"A classic case of a shipwreck." Bi Fang swallowed a piece of shark meat, he had always been following the barrage, "In 1884, a pleasure yacht named 'Mimosa' set sail from Southampton of Central Country."

"More than a month later, on July 5th, when the yacht sailed to the northwest of the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa, it encountered a storm and sank quickly."

"Four crew members escaped to the only lifeboat, the living conditions at sea were extremely harsh, with little food and water. For the first two days of drifting, they did not eat. On the third day, starving and thirsty, they opened a can of radishes they had saved during the escape and shared it."

"On the fifth day, they caught a turtle and sustained themselves on it and remaining canned food. For the following eight days, there was no food or fresh water. They could only occasionally collect some rainwater with oilskin capes to survive."

"On the sixteenth day, two crew members began to fall ill. On the nineteenth day, the 17-year-old crew member Richard Parker fell into a deep coma. Faced with a dire situation, the captain made a hard decision, suggesting they draw lots to decide whose death would buy life for the others."

"One of the crew members refused, and the proposal to draw lots was rejected."

"But the following day, they still saw no hope of rescue, so one of the crew members, Stephens, suggested sacrificing Parker at the captain's insinuation."

"After a prayer, Stephens held down the unconscious crew member as the captain plunged a knife into the man's throat, ending his life. Subsequently, the three of them survived on the flesh and blood of the deceased crew member for four days until, fortunately, they were rescued by a passing ship."

Bi Fang placed the empty wooden cup back into the slot, closed the watertight lid, and tapped it lightly with two fingers.

"This is a famous maritime disaster case, basically known by all who study law, and also clearly understood by survival experts as a historic event."

"I remember the judge's words about the case verbatim."

"While we refuse to acknowledge that certain inducements can serve as an excuse for crime, we must not forget the inducements in this case: the environment was so harsh, the pain so unbearable, maintaining proper judgment and good conduct was incredibly difficult."

"We often force ourselves to establish standards we cannot reach, to set rules we cannot follow. Yet no person has the right to claim that inducement is a reason for exoneration, even if he himself might succumb to such inducement; nor does anyone have the right, out of sympathy for the criminal, to try to change or weaken the definition of crime."

Bi Fang twisted the watertight lid, tightening it to prevent loss during the upcoming storm, then added more seawater into the barrel.

This evaporation device was Bi Fang's proud creation, polished to a smooth finish, made from a single hollowed-out tree stump, almost entirely one piece.

In the bottom of the round barrel, seawater accumulated, evaporated, and then, under the inverted funnel-shaped watertight lid, condensed into the wooden cup in the center.

The weather was still unbearably hot, and every day, during daylight hours, a fair amount of freshwater would accumulate, sometimes even with some to spare.

Bi Fang wrapped the shark meat in palm leaves, then encased it in canvas, before pulling out a length of hemp rope from the bow, securely tying down his tools and supplies to the body of the ship, while also reinforcing the connection platform between Viking and the aircraft carrier.

The hull of the aircraft carrier was not deep, but it was not empty; inside were logs and planks, secured with several turns of rope, materials reserved for unexpected circumstances.

"Normal survival is extremely difficult, without sufficient knowledge, without enough ability to act. They encounter obstacles at every turn, hit a wall at every step, tread as if on thin ice. With woefully inadequate supplies, they don't know whether what they're doing is right, whether they're delaying death or hastening it."

"They would feel fear, it's quite normal, truly quite normal. Everyone is afraid of death, especially a meaningless death; it could not be more ordinary."

"The heart races wildly, the brain starved of oxygen, thoughts seem to freeze; even making a simple tool causes trembling hands. You want to create a fishing spear, but lack the materials, and while crafting it, mistakes happen, like cutting a finger, blood gushing forth, intense pain jolting your brain, driving you further into despair."

"No food, no water, no companions, no hope."

"That is the norm in survival."

[What the hell is with this immersive sensation?]

[Why is my empathy so intense?! (Crying)]

"I've demonstrated many, many techniques that seem effortless, always turning danger into safety, never facing true desperation, but you have to understand one thing, that's me, not you."

"The storm is coming."

Bi Fang stood up, his expression solemn.

In the dark world, a branch-like lightning bolt rapidly branched across the clouds.

A brief silence.

An explosive boom echoed in my ears.
