Lord of the Rings: Warriors

Chapter 159: Chapter 159: Stalemate

"Alternate shooting cover!" Thranduil, a master of commanding archers, drew his bow and joined the other elven archers, firing at the outer walls and arrow towers of Dol Guldur.

Though the elves' shooting speed was not fast at this moment, it was precise enough. Every arrow was aimed at the arrow slits and shooting holes in the city wall and towers.

Any enemy appearing there would face an onslaught of arrows already locked onto their positions.

"Guards! Form shield walls! Cross the bridge!" Rynar's eyes narrowed. The Zaltarion Royal Guards, with their invincibility skill, were undoubtedly the best vanguard.

In such a steep and perilous terrain, unless there were some thick-skinned trolls lying in ambush on the other side of the city wall... there was no one else who could break through their defense.

"Shield wall!"

A hundred royal guards split from the rest, forming three rows. The guards on the left and right stood close together, their thick tower shields forming a wall that surrounded them.

The middle row of royal guards raised their tower shields overhead. The overlapping shields instantly created an impenetrable sky defense.

The three rows of royal guards activated their shield wall skill, and in that moment, a moving "wall" emerged!

"No one can break through their defense! No one!" Omsk praised. This was the most elite infantry of the Zaltarion Empire!

They had once intimidated all of Middle-earth! They were the foundation of the empire!

"Boom! Boom! Boom!" The synchronized, heavy steps of the guards reverberated as this moving wall of defense finally reached the bridgehead.

"Destroy the bridge!" The orc leader watched in horror as the impenetrable wall of soldiers advanced toward the castle.

Realizing there was no other option, he quickly gave the order to destroy the bridge, for Dol Guldur's outer city was perched on a cliff.

"Kill them! Don't let them destroy the bridge!" Vanervi roared, catching the orc's conspiracy on the wind.

"Throw! Throw! Don't conserve your energy or battle aura!" Elenthor shouted angrily.

With their command, the originally accurate and lethal shooting became fast, precise, and ruthless!

Torrents of arrows rained down from the sky, and several trolls trying to throw stones were instantly riddled with arrows, their bodies turning into pincushions before they even had a chance to scream. They fell to the ground, dead.

"Quick! Rush forward! They're going to destroy the bridge!" The experienced royal guards also saw through the orcs' plan.

However, in their heavy armor, they could barely maintain their formation, slowing their advance. Though they wanted to speed up, their pace still couldn't increase.

"Boom! Boom! Boom!" Several dull thuds echoed.

"Damn! Ballistae!" A royal guard with a keen eye exclaimed. The arrow towers in Dol Guldur began to retaliate, and the crossbows hidden in the flat-topped towers came to life.

"Hold steady!"

"Boom!"

Although the heavy crossbows couldn't break through their defenses immediately, the sheer force of their impact was hard to ignore.

The first few bolts had already pushed them half a step sideways, forcing the entire formation to halt. If there were more ballistae, they could have been knocked off balance and sent flying.

"Elenthor! Thranduil! Vanervi! Suppress the crossbow towers!"

Rynar said urgently. Ordinary elves couldn't reach the three or four-kilometer range of the ballistae, but the three of them—hunters of the sixth rank—certainly could.

"I see them!" Vanervi seized his longbow, drawing it to full moon and aiming at the crossbow towers hidden among the high towers.

"Bang!" The fire-infused energy on his arrow exploded in flames, engulfing half the tower top in fire.

"Boom!"

"Damn! Off target!" Vanervi cursed. While he had successfully hit the crossbow tower, it wasn't destroyed. Seconds later, the crossbow tower resumed its fire.

"Your Majesty! We can't hold! We can't advance!" The royal guards at the rear shouted in frustration. The constant barrage of crossbow bolts made it impossible for them to move.

Every time they tried to reposition, the impact of the giant crossbow would send some of them flying.

"Think of something! The shields are already dented!" A royal guard's voice called out.

Each crossbow bolt not only shattered the battle aura on the shield's surface but also caused damage to their tower shields.

While the fine gold alloy shields were sturdy, they couldn't withstand the enormous power of the dragon-hunting crossbows.

"Straight ahead!

Troll charge! Out with the spears!" One of the guards warned. Indeed, several massive trolls in iron armor were leaping over the city walls and charging at them.

If they let them through, these trolls could easily push the elite royal guards off the cliff.

"Swish! Swish! Swish!" From the shield wall's gaps, three streaks of cold light suddenly flashed.

The trolls in front howled in pain as they collapsed to the ground. After struggling for a moment, they lay still.

Their fall caused a chain reaction, tripping the other trolls charging from behind, and one unlucky troll even tumbled off the cliff with a howl.

Their sudden downfall immediately caught the attention of the allied forces.

Taking advantage of the royal guards' extraordinary defense, Rynar ordered the elven archers to fire indiscriminately at the area.

The royal guards behind their shield wall listened to the rain of arrows as the trolls were torn apart, some falling to the ground or rolling down the mountainside.

"Gods! They've blocked the path!" Rynar cursed, leaping up. The trolls were dead, but what were these mountains of flesh?

If there weren't the constant crossbow interference, the royal guards could easily push the bodies off the bridge.

But the issue was, they were now stuck on the bridge, unable to move.

"What the hell! It's become a stalemate!" Rynar covered his face. Aside from the royal guards taking hits, everyone else was freely unleashing their firepower.

The orcs targeted the stone bridge and the royal guards on it, while the allied forces targeted the orcs hidden in the city.

As for the royal guards… they were cowering behind their shields, trembling.

"Boom!" With the efforts of the royal guards at the front, they managed to push the first troll's body off the bridge.

They had barely reached the middle of the stone bridge when… there were still seven more bodies ahead of them.

"Suppress the crossbow towers! Don't let them shoot again!" Rynar nearly went mad.

Those damned orcs were like rats in a field, always popping in and out, and the giant crossbows kept firing unexpectedly. The three sixth-rank hunters couldn't fully suppress them.

"How many crossbows have they set up? Haven't we cleared them all yet?" Omsk asked bitterly. He had confirmed that at least ten crossbows had been hit, but some were still firing.

"The Ringwraiths are involved!

They're protecting the crossbow towers! Although we successfully hit the crossbows, we clearly haven't broken through their defenses!" Rynar quickly realized the problem.

The Ringwraiths seemed to be intent on preventing the allied forces from engaging in close-quarters combat.

"Keep going! Kill them!" Rynar gritted his teeth, grabbing his longbow and firing it with fury. Precision? Who needed precision? It was all orcs inside, surely one would be hit, right?
