Chapter 40: Chamber End
James stood tensely, his wand tightly gripped, his eyes locked on Tom Riddle. The phantom of Voldemort had just finished his taunting monologue, revealing the truth of his identity.
"Enough talk," James muttered under his breath. Without warning, he fired a spell directly at Tom.
"Stupefy!"
Tom reacted instantly, whipping Ginny's wand to counter the spell. "Expulso!"
The clash of spells sent sparks scattering in the dim chamber, illuminating the damp stone walls and serpent statues in harsh bursts of light. James felt the impact ripple through his arm, but he held steady, sending another volley of hexes toward the phantom.
"Impressive," Tom said with a sinister smile, deflecting James' attack and firing back. "But you're outmatched, boy."
James dodge a particularly violent spell that smashed into a nearby statue. "Outmatched?" he shot back, a smirk playing on his lips. "By someone borrowing a little girl's wand? Pathetic."
Meanwhile, Ron had sprinted to Harry and Ginny. Harry was shaking Ginny, trying to wake her, but she was still pale and unresponsive.
"Harry, we need to get her out of here!" Ron said urgently, glancing nervously at James and Riddle trading spells.
"Right," Harry agreed. He grabbed Ginny under her arms, and together with Ron, began dragging her toward the chamber's exit.
But Tom's eyes flickered toward them, and his expression twisted with malice. He hissed something in Parseltongue, his voice echoing chillingly in the chamber. The ground trembled, and with a groan, a hidden door in the wall slid open.
From the shadows emerged the Basilisk.
Its enormous, glistening body slithered into the chamber, and its yellow, slit-pupiled eyes scanned the room. Tom smirked at James, who momentarily faltered at the sight of the massive creature.
"Kill" Tom hissed in Parseltongue, his voice commanding.
The Basilisk turned toward James, its fangs bared. It lunged, but Harry, seeing the danger, abandoned Ginny and yelled, "Hey!" He sent a spell streaking toward the serpent. The Basilisk snapped its head toward him, its focus shifting.
"Run!" Harry shouted to Ron, who grabbed Ginny and continued dragging her to safety.
James, in the thick of the duel, fired a well-aimed Confringo at Riddle, who deflected it with a shimmering shield. "You'll have to do better than that," Riddle taunted.
"Oh, don't worry, I plan to," James retorted, darting to the side and using the cover of a crumbled statue to fire a rapid succession of spells. "Expulso! Diffindo!"
Tom barely managed to block the barrage, his borrowed wand sparking under the pressure. The fight was evenly matched for now, but James knew it wouldn't last.
Across the chamber, Harry was in a desperate game of cat and mouse with the Basilisk. The serpent's massive body smashed through stone columns as it chased him, its fangs snapping dangerously close. Harry tried to fire another spell but lost his wand when the Basilisk's tail swiped him, sending him sprawling to the ground.
"Damn it!" Harry muttered, scrambling to his feet as the Basilisk loomed over him. Trapped and unarmed, he climbed onto the Salazar Slytherin statue, the snake's head following his every move.
Meanwhile, Ron had secured Ginny in a safe corner and sprinted back into the chaos. "James!" he yelled, just as Tom aimed a powerful hex at him.
"Protego!" James shouted, barely shielding Ron from the spell.
"I'll help you!" Ron said, raising his wand.
"Stay back, Ron!" James barked. But before Ron could act, Tom sent a disarming spell flying at him.
"Expelliarmus!"
Ron's wand was torn from his hand, landing neatly in Tom's outstretched palm. With a flick, Tom sent Ron flying into a wall, where he crumpled with a groan.
"Pitiful," Tom sneered. He turned his eyes to James. "Bow before me, and I might spare your life."
James, panting and battered, straightened. "Not a chance." He unleashed another wave of spells, forcing Tom to retreat behind a column.
Across the chamber, Ron stumbled to his feet and spotted Harry's wand lying abandoned on the floor. He grabbed it, muttering to himself, "Should've stayed back… but no, I had to come running." Then his eyes widened in horror as he saw Harry cornered by the Basilisk, still clinging to the statue.
"Oi, over here, you oversized belt!" Ron yelled, firing a spell at the serpent's head.
The Basilisk hissed in anger, its attention snapping to Ron. Harry, seeing his chance, spotted a sword gleaming inside the hat Fawkes had delivered. Summoning his courage, he grabbed the blade, leaped from the statue, and drove the sword straight into the serpent's skull.
The Basilisk thrashed violently, its death throes shaking the chamber. Harry was thrown clear, landing hard on the stone floor but alive.
Meanwhile, James and Tom's duel reached its climax. Both were battered and out of breath. James muttered to himself, "All that training, and I'm still barely holding on."
Tom chuckled darkly. "You can never be my equal, no matter how hard you try."
But James noticed something—Tom was flickering, his form unstable. The phantom's magic was weakening.
"Let's finish this," James said, raising his wand.
Tom nodded grimly, his borrowed wand glowing ominously.
"Bombarda!" James shouted, sending a spell toward Tom.
Tom countered with a throwback charm, aiming to deflect James' spell. James followed it with a disarming curse.
Tom dodged the blast, but James' Expelliarmus struck true, sending Ginny's wand spinning from his hand. However, Tom's charm connected, throwing James backward into a pile of rubble.
Tom face twisted with triumph. "You could have won, boy," he sneered. "But now, you've lost." He raised Ron's wand and cast a blasting curse.
James smirked despite the pain. "Checkmate."
Tom's unease grew as he realized too late—Ron's wand was faulty. The curse backfired spectacularly, engulfing Tom in a burst of energy.
"No!" Tom screamed as his form began to unravel.
James, struggling to stand, shouted, "Destroy the diary!"
Harry, clutching the sword, plunged it into the diary. Ink spilled out like blood, and Tom Riddle let out a guttural scream before vanishing into nothingness.
The chamber fell silent, save for the faint sound of water dripping. James looked at Harry and Ron, exhaustion etched on his face. "Next time… let's not wait until the last minute to kill the giant snake."
Ron, still clutching Harry's wand, muttered, "Yeah, next time, someone else can play the hero."
Harry move to ginny , cradling the injured Ginny, managed a weak smile. "Thanks, James. We couldn't have done it without you."
James shrugged, wincing at the pain in his ribs. "Let's just get out of here before this place collapses. I've had enough drama for one day."
