Malevolent Immortal

Chapter 81: The Crucible of Souls

The obsidian chamber pulsed with a malevolent energy, reflecting Kai's form like a funhouse mirror – a distorted parody of the ruthless cultivator he had become. His body, sheathed in flickering, dark flames, pulsed with raw, untamed power.

The Wraith, a spectral entity woven from the threads of Kai's mortality, awaited him, its form shifting and reforming, a swirling vortex of ethereal agony. Its eyes, twin orbs of malevolent starlight, locked onto Kai's.

"You cannot escape the echoes of your deeds," the Wraith hissed, its voice a symphony of regret and despair. "Your pursuit of power, fueled by the fear of death, has left a trail of devastation. Embrace the inevitable, or be consumed by it."

Kai laughed, a harsh, rasping sound devoid of humor. The dark flames surrounding him roared, echoing the derision in his voice. "Death? I court it! I dance with it!

He raised his dark, flame-wreathed blade, a weapon forged from the very essence of the his darkness. The blade crackled with energy, an ominous prelude to the tempest that was about to erupt.

The Wraith lunged, a flurry of spectral claws lashing out. Its attacks were ethereal, swift as whispers, aimed at the places where his vulnerabilities had once been. Yet Kai, enhanced by months of reverse cultivation in the abyss, anticipated each movement. His blade danced, cutting through the spectral claws with deadly precision.

"Shadowstep!" Kai muttered, vanishing into a wisp of darkness, appearing directly behind the Wraith. The Shadowstep, a technique perfected under Yumiko's brutal tutelage, allowed him to teleport short distances through the shadows, a gift from his awakened dark affinity. He swung his blade, aimed at the Wraith's ethereal heart.

The Wraith recoiled, surprised by the sudden attack, and reacted with a skill akin to his own shadow manipulation: it solidified, parts coalescing into temporary defensive barriers. But Kai had foreseen this reaction; it was a defense tailored for flesh, and it reacted slower.

"I have honed myself within the crucible of shadows! I can match even this illusion! I surpass any and all pretenders!", Kai roared as his weapon collided again and again into Wraith's phantom form.

" Death's Embrace!," a ghastly howl burst out as wraith focused all his qi to one point, a blow capable of shattering most Core Formation realm cultivators. It used several spectral clones aimed at disrupting his shadow attacks.

Kai was battered; each attack brought painful shards of memory: the villagers' weakening bodies, Chen's lifeless gaze, Meon's betrayed trust. The Wraith wasn't simply fighting him; it was flaying him with his past, attempting to break his will.

But the visions merely strengthened him; his blade spun into an offensive flurry. Kai focused; years spent fighting for mere scraps of survival and later, dominance in the world fueled his counterattack. He danced with his spectral opponents, using speed to counter strength, turning the wraith's own strategy back at it, using quick shifts in pace and precision counter attacks while dodging weaker attacks with subtle movements. His actions were a storm within the obsidian mirror:

"Abyssal Maw!" a horrifying roar reverberated, a shadowy maw engulfing several of the wraith's illusory constructs.

Dark Fury's wave of shadows crashed over Wraith's remaining copies. A blinding black explosion forced a long gasp. Kai didn't pause his offensive assault, launching further attacks before the wraith can regain his composure.

"Each strike... a reminder of your brutality", the Wraith wheezed, each word a tortured echo in the chamber. "Every drop of life force stolen... Every life cruelly extinguished… they call to you, Kai!"

This last remark struck at Kai, an unsettling echo from deep within. Was he fueled by ruthlessness, or something deeper, something darker still? A chill ran down his spine for only the fraction of a second before he banished all hesitation; such sentimentalities were weaknesses.

"Soul Rend!" Kai unleashed a focused strike of shadow energy to pierce one more illusory form, and with this final assault, Wraith's power dissipated, its structure failing as his power diminished. As this final barrier broke, his body faltered slightly, he channeled Shadow Fury again, but his reserves diminished too greatly.

With a roar that threatened to tear through dimensions he launched his ultimate attack at Wraith's heart – a strike. He used the full extent of his dark core's power. It unleashed a surge of darkness; not a cut, but a consuming force, drawing power from the very soul of the wraith.

He stood victorious, but the price was high. The darkness subsided, revealing Kai in a much weakened state. His clothes tattered, he held the severely injured Wraith; its ethereal energy completely severed and fractured.

His dark core pulsed weakly and with deep exhaustion, a thin sheen of sweat glazed across his entire face and the air grew chilly with his waning presence. His body trembled slightly; most of his Qi reserves spent. The victory was brutal; he had torn apart his own mirror, only surviving from an unimaginable effort of force and will.
