vol. 1 chapter 23 - Keep Enduring
Two days later, Catherine stepped into the main hall once again. A shallow smile tugged at her lips as she beheld the scene inside the barrier—
Degrienne was curled up on the ground, her once-delicate face now carrying a trace of feral wildness.
Her fangs had grown longer than before, nearly pressing against her lower lip—a typical sign of a bloodkin who had been deprived of blood for too long.
Catherine crouched down and pinched her nose.
“Mm—!”
Degrienne jolted awake. Her crimson eyes were laced with bloodshot veins, and there wasn’t a shred of reason left in them.
She lunged at Catherine purely on instinct, her sharp fangs aimed straight for her throat!
Catherine let out a soft chuckle and sidestepped with elegance, settling gracefully into a nearby chair.
From her sleeve, she pulled out a cat-teasing rod, the tip adorned with a blood-red gem.
“Come here, little wildcat.” She flicked the rod, the gemstone drawing an enticing arc through the air.
Degrienne’s gaze was instantly snared. A low snarl rumbled from her throat as she lunged at the gem without hesitation.
With a slight flick of her wrist, Catherine pointed the rod to the left—Degrienne pounced left.
To the right—Degrienne swerved right just as fast.
“How amusing~” Catherine rested her chin on her hand, watching her beast-like reactions with pleasure.
But after missing the target several times, Degrienne’s movements suddenly stalled.
She stared at the now-motionless gem, tilting her head slightly—as if something had clicked.
The next moment, her gaze slowly turned.
Her blood-red eyes locked onto Catherine—unyielding.
The toy was inanimate. The true “prey” was the woman in front of her.
She bared her fangs and let out a threatening growl from deep in her throat, step by step closing in on Catherine.
Catherine raised an eyebrow, a hint of surprise flashing through her eyes. “Oh? Regained a bit of clarity?”
Rather than retreating, she calmly extended a hand and pressed a fingertip to Degrienne’s forehead—
“But still far from enough.”
The moment Catherine touched her, Degrienne’s reason came crashing back like a tidal wave.
She stared blankly at her dirt-covered hands, then lowered her gaze to the claw marks she’d gouged into the floor. A suffocating shame flooded through her, unlike anything she had ever felt.
“Uhh… uhh…”
Tears spilled uncontrollably, striking the ground in wet splashes. She curled in on herself, silver hair cascading forward to hide her face.
To be toyed with like a pet—this humiliation cut deeper than having her legs broken.
“Starve me to death, if you dare…” Her voice was hoarse, choked with the last dregs of defiance.
Catherine laughed softly and clapped her hands with poise.
Veronica stepped forward immediately, holding a silver platter. On it was a steaming roast venison steak, its rich aroma spreading through the hall.
“How could I bear to?” Catherine set the platter down before her personally. “Come on. Eat a little.”
Degrienne turned her face away, but her stomach betrayed her, growling in protest.
In the end, seduced by the scent, she grabbed the venison and tore into it ravenously.
One piece. Two.
By the fifth plate, the gnawing hunger still hadn't subsided. If anything, her head was growing more and more muddled.
“It’s not enough, is it?”
Catherine swirled the liquid in her wine glass, the crimson fluid casting a seductive sheen. “What you need… is this.”
Degrienne bit down hard on her lip, fingernails digging deep into her palms.
She didn’t want to admit it. That she had become… a monster that could only survive by sucking blood.
But the craving tearing at her from deep within… that was more devastating than any shame.
“No…” she whispered, shaking her head, “I won’t…”
Suddenly, Catherine raised the glass and drained it in one motion, letting a single red drop ~Nоvеl𝕚ght~ trail down from the corner of her lips.
At that moment, Isabella emerged from the shadows, a chain in her hand leading a trembling human girl.
She looked around sixteen or seventeen, long black hair disheveled across her shoulders, tears clinging to her lashes.
Silver chains bound her wrists. Her skin was pale, soft, and unmarked.
Degrienne’s pupils contracted to pinpoints—
Fragrant.
The scent wafting from the girl ignited every drop of blood in her body.
It was the fragrance of life. The sweetness of a virgin.
Her fangs ached as they surged longer. Her mind, battered by desire, wavered at the edge of collapse.
“No… I can’t…”
Degrienne clenched her fists so tight they trembled, trying to use pain to hold onto sanity.
But the girl’s scent seeped through every breath she took. Each inhale eroded her control further.
Isabella, expressionless, shoved the girl forward.
“P-please, I’m begging you…”
The girl stumbled and fell, tears spilling down her cheeks. “My little sister… she’s only ten… if I die, she…”
Degrienne could endure no longer. She lunged!
She slammed the girl to the floor, hands on either side of her face. Silver hair draped down, veiling the two of them in intermingled breaths.
A teardrop slid off the girl’s cheek and landed on Degrienne’s hand—hot enough to burn.
“Don’t… please…” the girl whimpered, eyes shut tight, awaiting death.
And in that instant—Degrienne saw her little sister’s face.
If she truly fell… if she became a monster…
What kind of expression would her sister wear?
“Get away…!”
She shoved the girl with all her might, leaving scratch marks across her arm with her claws.
Then scrambled backward, hands bracing against the floor, until her spine slammed into the edge of the barrier.
Catherine let out a hum and clapped slowly. “What a surprise. You actually resisted.”
Degrienne panted hard, the crimson fading from her eyes.
She looked down at her hands—still warm from the girl’s body.
She had almost… killed another innocent.
Catherine’s smile curled subtly upward. She grabbed the still-shivering girl beside her and roughly shoved her toward Degrienne.
“Let’s see…”
She grabbed the girl’s nape and forced her neck to tilt, exposing her slender throat. “How long can you last?”
Degrienne’s teeth chattered. A strangled whimper broke from her throat.
The scent of fresh blood was right in front of her. Her saliva poured forth, uncontainable.
She wanted—she needed—to pounce, to drain her dry, to tear her apart!
But in the next moment, she slammed her hand down, driving her claws deep into the wound on her thigh!
“Ugh—!” The pain sent her entire body into spasms—but it managed to dull the bloodthirst for now.
Catherine raised an eyebrow, a flicker of astonishment in her gaze.
Even now? Even like this… she was using self-harm to suppress her instincts?
The girl’s tears fell onto Degrienne’s face. The warmth only deepened the torment.
Her breathing turned ragged. Her claws had embedded into her own flesh.
But the hunger surged again—wave after wave, relentless and crushing.
Just as she reached her breaking point, Catherine let go, flinging the girl to the side.
Isabella immediately stepped in, silently cradling the fainted girl and carrying her away.
Catherine bent down, reaching to lift Degrienne’s quivering body—
“That’s enough. We’ll stop for toni—”
Before she could finish, Degrienne suddenly erupted, lunging and tackling her to the floor!
Catherine’s back slammed against the ground, stunned.
Degrienne straddled her waist, eyes blazing with crimson madness.
Her sharp fangs pressed against Catherine’s carotid artery. Hot, erratic breaths brushed against her skin.
“Heh…”
Instead of anger, Catherine laughed, brushing a blood-streaked lock of hair from Degrienne’s cheek. “You really couldn’t hold back after all?”
Chomp—!
A sharp sting tore through her throat.
Degrienne bit down—hard.
