Chapter 15: Chapter 15: Doctor: I Saw You as My Successor, and You Want to
After leaving Steve's dormitory, Dr. Erskine began walking back to his quarters.
A drizzle was falling from the sky, and a cool breeze carried a slight chill through the air.
Under the lamplight not far from his room, the doctor saw Wang Ye standing there, clearly waiting for him. He already knew exactly why Wang Ye had come.
"Come, let's talk inside—it's raining out here."
Wang Ye nodded and followed him into the room.
Inside, the two sat down facing each other.
"You're here so late—this must be about tomorrow's experiment.
Are you worried about Steve?"
Dr. Erskine coughed lightly; his voice was slightly hoarse.
"I have full confidence in Steve.
But I came here tonight for something else.
Doctor, I remember you once told me about Schmidt of Hydra.
These past few days, I've been thinking… Could something go wrong during tomorrow's experiment?"
Wang Ye's tone was cautious, his expression serious as he looked at Dr. Erskine.
The doctor's face shifted slightly.
"Nothing should go wrong. The lab is well hidden. You don't think Hydra could—"
He suddenly stopped mid-sentence, unwilling to believe what he was starting to suspect.
Wang Ye nodded.
"With Hydra's terrifying intelligence network, it's entirely possible that your movements have already been exposed.
Worse yet—they might already know our entire experiment plan and schedule.
Maybe they're just waiting for the moment we succeed so they can seize your research."
Dr. Erskine nodded in agreement.
Wang Ye's reasoning was sound. Knowing Schmidt's character, there was no way he would just sit back and allow the Allies to create a super-soldier army that could stop his world conquest.
Seeing the sweat start to bead on the doctor's forehead, Wang Ye continued:
"Once the experiment succeeds tomorrow, the core formula of the super serum will be handed over.
But what happens after that? What if the formula falls into the hands of people driven by greed and ambition?
That's a danger.
The serum amplifies what's already inside—a good person becomes better, but a bad person becomes worse. In essence, the super serum is a double-edged sword. Used properly, it can defeat enemies; used improperly, it can destroy its wielder."
Wang Ye said all this without the slightest change in tone or expression—cool and calm as if none of it had anything to do with him.
Dr. Erskine had always been focused solely on the research itself and had never given much thought to what would happen after the experiment succeeded.
Now, hearing Wang Ye's analysis, the wine he'd just enjoyed turned to cold sweat running down his back.
"So… what about tomorrow's experiment?"
The doctor felt everything spiraling out of his control and didn't know what to do.
"I think, while there's still time, we should go find Colonel Phillips and Agent Carter to discuss a countermeasure."
Wang Ye furrowed his brow as well, looking visibly conflicted.
Dr. Erskine nodded quickly. This kind of issue needed to be handled by professionals.
Late at night
Four people gathered in a small, secret emergency meeting.
"Our lab is extremely well-hidden. Only high-ranking officials even know about it. No matter how capable Schmidt's agents are, there's no way they know. Your concern is unnecessary."
Colonel Phillips sat at the head of the table, rhythmically tapping his fingers as he weighed the situation.
"But we can't rule out the possibility of spies close to the top. The outcome of this serum is too critical to the direction of the war—we can't afford to be careless."
Agent Carter frowned slightly, still feeling uneasy. She turned to look at Wang Ye.
"She's right, Colonel.
Hydra has always lurked in the shadows. We have no real idea how deep their influence goes. We must be fully prepared for any possibility regarding the serum."
Wang Ye voiced his agreement.
"And once the serum succeeds, the higher-ups will undoubtedly confiscate the formula and begin mass-producing super-soldiers.
If those soldiers, after becoming more powerful, go out of control—then this force might become even more terrifying than Hydra itself."
Dr. Erskine had gone pale. The joy he'd felt earlier had completely vanished, replaced with dread and regret.
Colonel Phillips and Agent Carter didn't look much better.
This was something they had considered before—but had chosen to ignore.
Now that Wang Ye had brought it up so directly, they could no longer avoid the issue. A solution had to be found.
Seeing the group deep in troubled thought, Wang Ye continued:
"There's a very simple way to resolve this.
Because right now, only Dr. Erskine knows the core formula of the super serum.
So, if the doctor were to 'die,' then the formula would be lost forever.
And we wouldn't have to worry about it being abused by others ever again."
"No way!" x2
Colonel Phillips and Agent Carter rejected the idea almost in unison.
Dr. Erskine stared at Wang Ye in shock, unable to believe he'd just suggested that.
Wang Ye smiled calmly.
"Colonel, Carter, no need to be so worked up—put the guns down. Maybe I didn't explain it clearly.
What I mean is, let the doctor fake his death to fool the politicians and Hydra's spies.
That way, we ensure the serum doesn't fall into the wrong hands, and at the same time, we eliminate Hydra's obsession with it.
The doctor can go into hiding and never again have to worry about his life being in danger."
At this, Dr. Erskine's expression finally relaxed—he'd truly feared Phillips and Carter might decide to sacrifice him "for the greater good."
Colonel Phillips and Agent Carter exchanged a glance, seeing the same understanding in each other's eyes.
"I think this plan could work. We'll just need to come up with a detailed arrangement."
Colonel Phillips slapped the table and stood up.
Everyone nodded and launched into a deep discussion on how to make the doctor's death appear real, natural, and flawless.
The meeting went on intensely until dawn began to break.
The Next Day
Inside the lab, the team was busy making final preparations.
Steve, led by Agent Carter, entered and immediately spotted Wang Ye working nearby. Overjoyed, he ran over.
"Master! I didn't know you'd be here!"
"Hahaha, of course!
This is a big day—of course I had to be here!"
Wang Ye patted Steve on the shoulder and added, "Now take off your shirt and lie down on this platform."
Steve nodded and removed his top, revealing a lean, well-trained physique, then lay down on the large enhancement chamber platform—oversized for his still-slender frame.
"How does it feel?"
Wang Ye walked over and gave Steve a shot of penicillin.
"Not bad. Just... this bed feels a little big."
Having his teacher nearby helped Steve feel a lot more relaxed.
"Trust me—it won't feel big for long."
