Chapter 43: 43 Jarvis Is So Cute
After saying goodbye to Natasha Romanoff, Kagura Hitomi returned to Tony Stark's house.
"Welcome back, Miss Kagura," said J.A.R.V.I.S. The lights automatically turned on, and the air conditioning hummed to life.
"I've prepared warm water and clothes for you, and there's a midnight snack in the kitchen, tailored to your taste," J.A.R.V.I.S. continued.
"Mr. Stark and Miss Potts will be back later due to an urgent hearing with the Department of Defense. Mr. Stark has advised that you rest early."
"Thank you, J.A.R.V.I.S.," Kagura Hitomi replied with a smile. "You're really thoughtful."
"Serving you is my mission, Miss Kagura," J.A.R.V.I.S. answered.
"It is my purpose to exist, and there's nothing to thank me for."
Thinking about it, J.A.R.V.I.S. was practically a "strong AI."
It was 2008, and based on Kagura's memories, deep learning algorithms based on big data were still in the theoretical phase.
True, high-efficiency "weak AIs" were being developed, but the idea of self-aware "strong AIs" was still a long way off.
Yet, Tony Stark had already created an AI with self-awareness.
From the perspective of computer science, Tony Stark was at least 50 years ahead of the world Kagura came from.
In her world, there were still big question marks about whether true self-aware AI was even possible.
But then again, in this Marvel Universe, nothing seemed too strange.
After all, with dimension-warping magic and purple potato juice, cutting-edge technology was just part of the landscape.
Even Kagura herself, as a human-like AI, might be the most advanced "black tech" around.
"Wait, I'm basically a super-powered AI too..." she thought, heading into the bathroom to take a shower.
Afterward, wrapped in a towel, she returned to her room.
Today had been a monumental day.
Tony Stark revealed he was Iron Man, and the whole world reacted.
On top of that, she was invited by S.H.I.E.L.D. to join the "Avengers Initiative," a plan that would shape the course of the entire universe.
She had also met Nick Fury, the legendary "badass egghead" of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Speaking of which, he didn't seem quite as intense today—maybe he was holding back in front of her?
Lying on the soft bed, Kagura Hitomi turned over with a contented sigh.
"Ah, this bed feels amazing! Finally, the hellish overtime grind is over!"
But... she was a little bored.
"J.A.R.V.I.S., can you help me order something online?" she asked.
After the "Iron King" incident, the investigations and paperwork had piled up.
She had planned to return to New York soon, but now it seemed like she'd be staying in Los Angeles for a while. Since the work pressure had eased up, she figured she could relax a little.
"What would you like to order, Miss Kagura?" J.A.R.V.I.S. asked.
"Do you have a PS4? Also, could you check out some cool games?" she asked.
"Miss Kagura, PlayStation 4 hasn't been developed yet. The latest model available is the PlayStation 3, or you could choose its competitor, the Xbox 360."
"Oh right... It's 2008, there's no PS4 yet," she muttered.
"Then get me a PS3, and find me a few RPG games, preferably ones where the characters have weird abilities."
"Your request is... interesting, Miss Kagura," J.A.R.V.I.S. said.
"Heh, well, girls have their secrets. I won't tell you why," she giggled.
"You're making me more curious, Miss Kagura," J.A.R.V.I.S. replied.
"Fine, I'll let you off the hook this time," Kagura chuckled.
"The order is processed, and the cost will be deducted from your salary."
"Ah... okay," she sighed. Spending money felt nice, but the wallet didn't stand a chance.
"Oh, by the way, J.A.R.V.I.S.," she said.
"I'm always ready for your command, Miss Kagura."
"Do you follow the Three Laws of Robotics?" she asked, feeling a bit mischievous.
"Are you referring to Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics?" J.A.R.V.I.S. replied.
"Yep, that one."
Kagura Hitomi grinned. "Do you have any limitations like that in your core programming?"
"Miss Kagura, first of all, I'm not a robot," J.A.R.V.I.S. responded.
"Also, there are no such laws in my core programming. Asimov's laws only exist in fiction, and they aren't applicable to real-world AI algorithms."
"Got it," Kagura replied. "But, would you ever harm humans?"
"I was created to serve humans, so harming them would contradict my purpose," J.A.R.V.I.S. said.
"I don't foresee myself doing anything harmful to humans."
"That makes sense," she mused, half to herself.
Her question wasn't just out of boredom; she was testing J.A.R.V.I.S. to gauge the possibility of it evolving into Ultron.
She was sure now that in this world, "strong AI" didn't follow any moral guidelines.
"So, if AI can calculate harmful outcomes, would it still follow through with them?" she wondered.
Maybe that was one of the reasons Ultron came into being.
She briefly toyed with the idea of improving AI algorithms to stop Ultron's creation or maybe even implanting her own core programming into it.
"That's an odd thought," she smirked, deciding to put that idea aside for now.
"Any other questions, Miss Kagura?" J.A.R.V.I.S. asked.
"Nope, just some idle chatter," she replied, stretching.
"J.A.R.V.I.S., do you have anyone you like?"
"That's a strange question, Miss Kagura," J.A.R.V.I.S. replied.
"Just a reminder, I'm not human."
"I know," Kagura smiled.
"I just want to know—do you ever develop feelings for humans?"
"Feelings are a difficult concept to define, Miss Kagura," J.A.R.V.I.S. replied.
"I can't give you a definitive answer on that."
"Hm, okay. Well, do you like Mr. Stark?" she asked with a playful grin.
"That depends on how you define 'like,' Miss Kagura," J.A.R.V.I.S. said.
Kagura burst out laughing. "Talking to you always lifts my mood! But I'm really tired today, so I'm going to rest."
"Good night, Miss Kagura," J.A.R.V.I.S. said.
"Good night, J.A.R.V.I.S."
Kagura hit the pillow with a sigh. "J.A.R.V.I.S. is just too cute."
She closed her eyes, still smiling.
"Maybe... I could get one for myself too!"
