Monday, Clear Sky
Erik and Charles yawned as they walked down the stairs.
It was Monday, and after having a "carefully prepared" breakfast from Clark, they were ready to head off to school "full of energy."
Suddenly, a familiar, delightful aroma wafted into their noses.
Both of them instantly snapped awake and exchanged a surprised glance.
"This is..."
Erik was visibly excited.
Charles nodded and shouted, "Dad!" before dashing toward the kitchen.
When they saw Mike holding a plate of food, they were so overwhelmed with emotion that they almost burst into tears.
"Dad!"
They called out as they rushed to hug Mike.
Mike raised the plate in his hand and smiled. "It's only been two days, was it really necessary to get this excited?"
"Dad, you don't understand!"
"The past two days, Clark... he..."
"Ahem!"
A soft cough interrupted them from behind. Both froze and forced a smile, saying, "Clark has lost weight taking care of us."
"Really?"
Mike glanced at Clark.
Clark took the plate from Mike's hands and said to Erik and Charles, "Get your breakfast and hurry up. Eat quickly, and we'll head to school together. Dad just got back, and he's already tired from making breakfast for you. He needs rest."
Both nodded, gazing at the breakfast in their plates, and tears of happiness welled up at the corners of their eyes.
This was amazing—they wouldn't have to eat Clark's cooking anymore.
They even felt the urge to high-five each other in celebration.
At that moment, they noticed Clark turning to look at them. His blue eyes briefly flashed with a dangerous red glow.
Both of them froze, quickly balancing the plates and rushing out.
Mike smiled and shook his head, removing his apron and setting it aside. He had a breakfast with the kids, and once they left for school, he disposed of the viral bomb from his dimensional pocket before heading upstairs to rest.
The Black Emperor incident had stirred up a lot of trouble, and once again, mutants were implicated, increasing public fear and unease toward them.
However, Mike had no concerns about it. His life had returned to normal.
Managing the farm, taking care of the kids, occasionally driving them to school, or heading to the bar for some fun, meeting new people whom he could get to know without their lives interfering with each other—his days were peaceful and enjoyable.
Time flew by, and another year had passed.
Clark was now fourteen, while Charles and Erik were both ten.
"I'm heading to the supermarket. Who wants to come with me?"
Mike stood at the doorway of the living room, looking at Erik and Charles who were sitting on the sofa. He asked, "Are you two coming?"
The two of them were glued to the TV, not even turning their heads. "We're watching TV. Not going."
Seeing how engrossed they were, Mike shook his head and smiled before leaving the house.
"Haha, that guy is so stupid!"
Erik laughed mockingly at the person on the screen.
Charles shot a sideways glance at Erik and said, "Stupid, and you're still watching?"
"Hmph," Erik grumbled, clearly displeased. "I'm changing the channel, not watching this anymore!"
With that, he stomped toward the TV box.
"No way! I want to watch this!" Charles protested, rushing to stop him.
The two of them began to fight over the remote.
"Tap, tap, tap!" The TV channel kept changing back and forth.
Suddenly, an inappropriate scene flashed on the screen.
"Stop!" Erik shouted in alarm, causing Charles to freeze, as if he had turned into a puppet.
"What, what's going on?" Charles stammered, looking confused.
"You—look!" Erik's voice was trembling, as if he had been shocked by something.
Charles turned to the screen, his face turning bright red instantly.
"Encrypted channel? What's happening?"
He was completely baffled.
Erik, excited, said, "Maybe we accidentally pressed the right buttons."
They exchanged a glance, their faces flushed, then, without a word, both turned back to stare at the TV.
Meanwhile, Clark, wearing his headphones and holding his walkman, was coming down the stairs. He was about to head outside for some sun when he suddenly turned around and his eyes widened in shock.
There, standing like frozen puppets, were Erik and Charles, holding the TV box and staring motionlessly at the screen. What startled him wasn't their posture, but the program playing on the TV.
"Encrypted channel!" he whispered under his breath.
In a flash, he slipped onto the couch without disturbing them, using his super vision to scan the room. Once he confirmed Mike wasn't around, he relaxed and continued to watch in secret.
For a moment, the only sound filling the room was the rapid beating of their hearts.
Over half an hour later, Clark's expression changed. He suddenly spoke, "Hurry! Dad's here!"
As soon as the words left his mouth, Charles and Erik whipped around. Charles instinctively shoved the TV box into Erik's hands.
"Ahh!" They both screamed when they saw Clark sitting on the couch behind them.
"When—when did you get here?" Erik stammered, looking at Clark with a mix of embarrassment and frustration.
Clark, slightly embarrassed, scratched his cheek and said, "Probably when you guys were watching earlier."
He glanced at the TV, relieved to see that the screen had gone black due to their frantic movements. He felt lucky that he hadn't been caught earlier.
"Why didn't you say anything?" Charles pressed his hand to his chest, feeling like his heart was in his throat.
Clark, unfazed, replied, "I just wanted to gather some evidence on you two."
Erik's face turned mournful. "Please don't tell Dad!"
Clark let out a dry chuckle.
Charles, giving Clark a suspicious look, asked, "You just wanted to watch, didn't you?"
"Me? How could that be?" Clark responded, feigning innocence.
"I can tell when you're lying!" Charles narrowed his eyes, with Erik quickly following suit.
Feeling the weight of their gaze, Clark cleared his throat and said, "Don't worry, I won't tell Dad."
With that, the three shared a knowing look.
In the next instant, Clark rushed upstairs, while Erik and Charles returned to the couch.
Everything was back to the way it was before Mike had left.
Mike walked in, carrying some groceries, and glanced around. Seeing Charles and Erik sitting on the couch, still watching TV quietly, he felt a bit strange.
Since when were they so obedient? No fighting today?
"What's for dinner?" he asked.
"Anything's fine!" they both said with smiles on their faces.
They were this easygoing? Mike raised an eyebrow, suspicion creeping in. "Did you two get into some kind of trouble?"
They shook their heads and gave him innocent smiles.
Mike eyed them with suspicion but eventually shrugged and went into the kitchen.
At dinner, the three kids ate quickly and behaved perfectly. There were no arguments, no food fights—nothing. They even served each other food, which made Mike feel a chill down his spine.
After finishing their meal, they quickly dashed upstairs to wash up and get ready for bed.
Mike was left stunned.
These three were way too well-behaved today. Had something happened?
He stared worriedly at their bedroom doors.
