Chapter 5: New Mission
When Zane heard that this person was indeed Professor X, he began a frantic inquiry with the system:
"System, system, what's going on? Didn't you say my X-gene had completely disappeared? How come Professor X is still coming for me?"
"Reporting to the Master, indeed, your X-gene has completely disappeared. However, this person might have sensed you before the system was bound to you. At that time, your X-gene still existed."
It was at this moment that Zane recalled the information given by the system during fusion: his soul was protected by the system, making it invulnerable to probing. He shouldn't have been detected by Professor X after acquiring the system. Evidently, Professor X sensed Zane before he entered the Marvel world, while his X-gene was still present.
'Ah..., unlucky.' Zane sighed deeply in his heart.
"Hello, young man. I'm Charles, a Professor at Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. You can also call me Professor. We came for you; you are one of us."
Zane didn't immediately respond to Professor X but invited him and 'Beast' inside. He had been thinking about how to handle the situation, and once he figured it out, he inadvertently glanced at Professor X's thick, curly hair. He hadn't paid much attention to their appearances because Professor X's arrival was too sudden.
'Wait a minute, shouldn't he be bald? How can a bald guy have dense curls?' Zane silently criticized it'.
(TN: Professor X has experienced the reversal of the future plot, communicated across time with his future self.)
'Seeing Charles like this, it should be after the 'Days of Future Past' timeline, and next should be the 'Apocalypse' plot.'
Zane organized his words.
"Cough, Professor, you said I'm a mutant? I've seen mutants on TV, and they all have superpowers, right? Why don't I have any?"
Yes, Zane was lying with his eyes wide open, but he no longer had an X-gene. Who would want to get involved in the messy affairs of mutants now?
"Zane, you are indeed one of us. If you still don't believe it, I have a genetic testing device for the X-gene. You can try it." Professor X explained patiently while handing Zane a small device.
Zane calmly accepted it, feeling no ripples in his heart; in fact, he almost wanted to laugh.
"Professor, how do I use this thing?" Curious, Zane played with the small device while asking Professor X.
"You just need to turn on the switch on the back. If you're a mutant, it will light up green and make a sound. If not, it won't react at all," Professor X explained patiently.
"Okay," Zane said, opening the switch on the back.
But one second passed, two seconds passed, and one minute passed, and the device showed no reaction.
Zane, standing in front of Professor X, clearly saw the calm and composed smile on his face gradually fading with time, turning into a bewildered expression. That expression made Zane want to take a picture for future fun, showing the X-Men.
'Could it be that the device is malfunctioning?"
Professor X's heart was in a state of confusion, but he still calmly said, "It may be a malfunction of the device." While speaking, he takes the device back from Zane's hand.
Then, a more awkward scene occurs: the moment the instrument is handed over to Professor X, it lights up and emits a pleasant beeping sound.
"It seems, Professor, you misunderstood. I'm afraid I'm not one of your compatriots. Now please leave my home." Zane says with a stern face and an expression that says, 'Get out; go far away."
Professor X was now frozen in place, unable to do anything but leave Zane's villa with the same awkwardness.
Zane stands at the doorway, watching Professor X's seemingly composed but actually panicked figure, suppressing the urge to burst into laughter.
But just as Zane is secretly pleased with getting rid of trouble, the system starts to make its presence known.
[Detected key figure Professor X, initiating mission: Save the daughter and wife of Magneto.
Mission reward: B-grade lottery once.
Failure penalty: None.]
Zane: "..."
Zane is a bit confused. He just drove Professor X away, finally pulling himself out of the mess of mutants. Now, this annoying system wants him to get involved voluntarily. Although there is no punishment for not doing the mission, the reward is tempting.
Based on Zane's current B-grade skill, "Thousand Faces," it can be seen that B-grade skills, while not godlike, possess surreal abilities. Zane, with his current strength sufficient for self-defense but lacking offensive skills, might just draw a useful skill from the lottery.
So, Zane was tempted. After weighing the options, he grits his teeth and decides to go for it. After all, the [Death River] now has six resurrection chances. As long as he is careful and avoids unnecessary risks, he won't easily meet his demise.
Now that he has made up his mind, there's only one question left: how to find Magneto? According to the movie plot, Magneto is currently working as a humble steelworker in Poland. Zane doesn't remember the exact location, but since the system has issued this mission, it means Magneto's wife and daughter are likely safe for now. However, it may not be the case if too much time passes.
At this moment, the considerate system appears again. In Zane's mind, it projects a small map, and on the map of Poland, there are two small dots, precisely the locations of Magneto's wife and daughter.
Zane silently praises the system's efficiency and immediately calls the person in charge at the company to arrange a direct flight to Poland.
In the middle of the call, Zane suddenly remembers Anna, the intern he met in the elevator yesterday, and finds her interesting. So, he adds a sentence:
"There's a new intern in the company named Anna. Send her over; I happen to need an assistant."
The CEO, on the other end, hesitates for a moment but eventually agrees.
