Chapter 18: Chapter 16: The Gateway to the Magical World
The other end of the earpiece was silent for several seconds before responding: "Agent Romanoff, you're on the scene and can judge more accurately than I can. How do you think we should approach her? Is she a threat that requires forced apprehension?"
Natasha didn't hesitate: "Absolutely not. We should maintain a good relationship with her and gradually win her over."
The voice on the other end asked, "Why?"
"First, she's the only wizard we currently have access to, and our only way to understand the mysterious wizarding world."
"Second, her magical abilities are intriguing and could potentially be combined with our technology for unexpected benefits."
"Third, despite her eccentric personality, she's fundamentally righteous. There's no need to push her away, and her background might be significant. Alienating her isn't worth the risk."
"And..." Natasha hesitated, "She's just a child."
"It seems you have a good impression of her."
Natasha nodded, not bothering to hide it: "That's right."
Though interacting with Hermione was a bit exhausting, Natasha genuinely liked the young girl and didn't want to do anything drastic.
The voice on the other end sounded again, this time more affirmatively: "Then proceed as you see fit. Maintain a good relationship, take advantage of the fact that she's a child, subtly influence her, and guide her thinking in line with our goals."
"I'd like to invite her to headquarters later. I'd like to meet her personally and learn more about the wizarding world."
"Yes, sir."
Natasha was about to turn around when she remembered something.
"By the way, Nick, there's one more thing," she paused, "The 'Homeland Strategic Defense Attack and Logistics Support Agency' is quite a mouthful. What Hermione called 'S.H.I.E.L.D.' sounds much better. Would you consider it?"
The other end was silent for a long time before replying, "Alright, let's go with that."
A smile crept up on Natasha's lips.
Unexpectedly, Hermione's first favor to them was giving them a fitting name.
Back inside the café, Natasha took a step.
Where's Hermione?
She quickly looked around, realizing the entire hall was empty.
Rushing to the table, she found a piece of paper lying there with some new handwriting.
"Sister Natasha, I have classes at school tomorrow morning. I'm heading back to rest. See you another day~"
Grabbing the note, Natasha quickly pressed the button on her earpiece.
"Hermione left just now; why wasn't I informed?"
Soon, voices came through the earpiece, summarizing: We didn't see her.
"Pull up the surrounding camera footage now!"
Natasha ordered, and soon a man in a black suit and sunglasses handed her a tablet.
The screen displayed footage from inside and outside the café.
While Natasha had been talking outside, Hermione rose from the table, opened the door, and left casually.
Strangely, the agents stationed nearby seemed to ignore her.
Even more unsettling, before leaving, Hermione waved goodbye to Natasha, who returned the gesture as if in a trance.
In his office, Nick Fury watched the bizarre scene unfold, a chill running down his spine.
...
Back in her dormitory, Hermione lay in bed.
She hadn't expected S.H.I.E.L.D. to discover her so soon.
Though she was prepared, it happened too fast.
She had underestimated them. There's a reason they are the strongest intelligence agency in the Marvel Universe, teeming with monsters.
But she was as cunning as always.
The bait was set; now she just had to wait for the big fish.
She was certain that during her conversation with Natasha, Nick Fury was eavesdropping.
The information she dropped in her parting words was enough to ignite their imaginations. The door to the mysterious magical world was slowly opening for them.
This power would surely attract many.
Especially when the key to that door was in her hands, her value as the only accessible (and indeed the only) wizard in the world was infinitely magnified.
Not to mention, the character Hermione crafted for herself—a child with a deep background, little scheming, a hint of justice—didn't pose a threat. It was a perfect cooperative... opportunity.
Coincidentally, Hermione thought so too.
But who would end up benefiting more wasn't certain.
Thankfully, her magic had successfully advanced to the second level. While her absolute power might not rival the Hulk, her diverse skills meant she could handle most situations in the early Marvel timeline, as long as she avoided provoking hidden monsters.
As for Dark Harvest, having just encountered S.H.I.E.L.D., she planned to pause for a bit.
If all went well, she'd soon make a significant move.
In the following days, Hermione focused on practicing spells at Hogwarts, honing her proficiency. She also practiced Quidditch with Wood and others, improving her flying skills daily.
Two weeks passed in the blink of an eye.
In the Great Hall, a group of young wizards enjoyed lunch at the long tables.
"The rabbit's eyes are slippery, and the harp is silent, turning this clear water into fine wine!"
Next to Hermione, a Gryffindor student waved his wand, chanting a spell while circling his cup.
It didn't look like spellcasting, more like a ritual, as if expecting a magical bonus.
What are you doing?
Hermione frowned, inching her chair away, wary of his wand poking her eye.
At that moment, Neville stood up nearby and approached Hermione. After hesitating, he gathered the courage to speak.
"Um... Hermione, thank you for what you did last time. If it weren't for the deceleration spell you cast at the crucial moment, I'd still be lying in the hospital."
Hermione glanced up, made a faint "um" sound, and continued eating.
Neville didn't mind. Everyone knew Hermione's character by now. She was usually reserved and didn't talk much, except with Harry and Ron.
Her clear disinterest in being disturbed meant even though she was beautiful, any boys interested would retreat under her aura.
Neville had also personally thanked Harry for standing up to Malfoy for him.
"Then I'll head back. Hermione, if you ever need anything, just ask, and I'll do it!" Neville said firmly.
As he turned to leave, Hermione suddenly called out, "Wait!"
Neville paused.
"I remembered there's something I need your help with."
"What?"
Glancing at Seamus Finnigan next to her, Hermione said slowly, "If you don't mind, could we switch seats?"
