Chapter 17: Chapter 17: A Surprised Gwen

"Pfft!" A strand of web shot from Peter's hand, connecting to a streetlight as they swung away from home.

"I could just drop you off, save myself some hassle," Peter teased.

"Then you'd spend the rest of your life in prison, leaving poor Aunt May all alone," Big White retorted.

"...You mentioned introducing me to a girlfriend? With your taste, I'm not hopeful."

"Then let's not bother," Big White replied.

---

Guided by Big White, Peter navigated through Queens, dodging helicopter searches, and arrived at the Wall Apartments on Roosevelt Road, No. 2016.

Reporters crowded the apartment's entrance, hoping to catch Sheriff George for an interview. Meanwhile, the Smithsonian Zoo staff had gone to the New York Administration Building to meet the mayor.

Carrying Big White, Peter discreetly climbed the fire escape to the twentieth floor.

It was around ten o'clock, and with nightlife just beginning, few had settled down, including young people like Gwen.

"She's not here!" Peter peered through the window, not spotting the person Big White had mentioned.

"Let me down," Big White said, slipping off Peter's back and avoiding his hand that tried to reach his head. He approached the window.

"She's usually here. We'll wait for her to return and let us in."

"Alright. I'll wait with you," Peter said, squatting beside the window. His attention soon shifted to a row of photo frames on the opposite wall.

"...Is the person you're talking about Gwen?" Peter asked, recognizing a familiar face in the photos.

"Yes, how do you know her? Is she famous?" Big White asked, surprised.

"No, she's... my classmate," Peter admitted, sounding nervous.

"A secret crush?"

"Yes, she's beautiful and different. I've imagined things with her," Peter confessed, feeling comfortable sharing with a panda.

"Oh, but you said my taste was bad?"

Peter: "..."

He realized he might have been too quick to judge.

Before he could respond, Gwen entered the room, wearing a blue sweater and holding her phone, seemingly searching for something.

"Knock, knock!" The noise caught Gwen's attention as she searched for news about Big White.

Seeing Big White outside the window, her eyes widened in surprise.

"Oh my God, when did you come back? This is the 20th floor! Did anyone see you?" She exclaimed, opening the window and bringing Big White inside.

"Are you hungry?"

Big White nodded.

After Gwen brought him in, Peter left a note not to reveal his identity and quietly slipped away.

Once inside, Gwen closed the window and pulled the curtains.

"The whole of Queens is looking for you. My dad isn't home; he's out searching too."

"I didn't expect you back so soon. How did you manage it?" She asked, playfully squeezing Big White's cheeks.

"A mysterious friend helped me hide and brought me back," Big White explained.

"Ah!" Gwen shrieked, startled by Big White speaking, and took a step back.

Big White folded his arms, ready for the familiar reaction.

Gwen recovered from the shock, eyeing Big White suspiciously.

"Did you just talk?"

Big White tilted his head innocently.

Gwen scrutinized him, then began inspecting his fur, looking for a device.

But as she moved toward a sensitive area, Big White intervened.

"Hey! You can't touch there! I'll get shy," he protested, pushing her hand away with his paw.

Gwen's eyes widened.

"Oh shoot! You really are talking..."

Her reaction mirrored Peter's shock, though more pronounced.

---

After some time, Gwen accepted that the panda could indeed talk.

"So, you can really talk?"

"Of course. If your ears are bad, pretend you misheard," Big White shrugged, lying down. The day's activity rivaled months of exercise at the zoo.

Why not sit? He'd wait for Peter's coat to be ready.

"When did you start talking? Just today?" Gwen asked, cautiously reaching to touch him.

"Yeah, a little stroll and I could talk," Big White replied, yawning.

"It's incredible. I've only heard parrots talk, never pandas," Gwen remarked, searching her phone for talking panda records, finding none.

"Well..." Big White murmured.

"Maybe you're unique. I wonder if there are records in Eastern Land," Gwen mused, noticing Big White had dozed off.

"Asleep?" She poked him gently, getting no reaction.

The room fell silent. Gwen watched Big White until a knock on the door brought her back to reality.

"Gwen, it's a snack. Your dad won't make it home tonight, so let's not wait."

"Okay, I'll be there," Gwen replied, shaking off her disbelief.

Looking at Big White, she grabbed her phone.

"Hey, Dad, you can come back. We've found Big White."

"...Really, I'll send a picture."

"Okay, I'll keep an eye on him."
