Chapter 9: The Trap is Set, the Hunters Close In

First-Person POV – Evelyn

📍 9:30 AM – Outside My Apartment

A red blinking light on my sleeve.

A tracker.

My stomach dropped.

Jason Cross hadn't lost me.

He had just been waiting.

Every single move I made—the escape, the fake-out, even making it home—he had been tracking me this entire time.

And that meant—

My breath caught.

I just led him straight to my apartment.

[Multiverse Chat Group]

👾 Administrator (Me): I'm tagged. I HAVE A TRACKER ON ME.

🕷️ Peter Parker: HOLY CRAP—HOW?!

💀 I'm Not a Bad Slime: Oh, that's bad. That's very bad.

⚔️ The Lone Wolf: Where is it?

👾 Administrator (Me): On my jacket sleeve. Didn't even notice it.

⚔️ The Lone Wolf: Remove it. NOW.

💀 I'm Not a Bad Slime: Throw it somewhere far. Let them chase the wrong location.

👾 Administrator (Me): On it.

First-Person POV – Evelyn

I moved fast, stripping off my jacket and tossing it onto the floor.

The blinking red light mocked me.

A piece of tech smaller than a dime.

I ripped it off, ignoring the chill on my arms, and bolted for the fire escape.

I had minutes—maybe seconds—before Jason's people arrived.

I had to get this tracker as far away from me as possible.

I reached the edge of the building, then hurled it.

It spun through the air, landing perfectly on top of a moving delivery truck.

The vehicle sped down the street, carrying the tracker with it.

That should buy me time.

But as I turned back toward my apartment—

A black SUV rounded the corner.

Shit.

Third-Person POV – Jason Cross

📡 TRACKER SIGNAL LOST

Jason's HUD flashed red, the blinking dot vanishing.

His jaw tightened.

She was smarter than expected.

He adjusted his comms, signalling his team.

"She ditched the tracker," Jason said, stepping out of his SUV. "She's close, but we don't have a pinpoint. Sweep the area."

He didn't need the tracker anymore.

He already knew where she lived.

Now?

It was just a matter of waiting.

First-Person POV – Evelyn

📍 9:45 AM – Fire Escape, Brooklyn

I crouched low, my breath coming in short, steady bursts.

I should have run.

But my apartment—my gear—was still inside.

And Claire.

I couldn't leave her.

I pulled up my Multiverse Chat, fingers moving fast.

[Multiverse Chat Group]

👾 Administrator (Me): Tracker gone. But I think they're still close.

🕷️ Peter Parker: DO YOU HAVE AN EXIT PLAN??

💀 I'm Not a Bad Slime: Stay low. Stay hidden.

⚔️ The Lone Wolf: Assess your surroundings. Any civilians in danger?

👾 Administrator (Me): …Claire's still inside.

🕷️ Peter Parker: Crap.

⚔️ The Lone Wolf: Then your mission has changed. Extract her. Quietly.

👾 Administrator (Me): Got it.

I gritted my teeth.

No more running.

I moved fast, slipping through the window and into my apartment.

Claire was still on the couch, staring at me.

"You're sweating," she noted. "And you just threw your jacket off a roof. Care to explain?"

"No time," I whispered. "We have to go."

Her expression shifted—serious now. "Who's coming?"

I peeked through the blinds.

SUV still parked. No movement.

Yet.

I turned back to Claire.

"Bounty hunters."

Her eyes widened—just for a second.

Then, to my surprise, she nodded.

"Okay," she said. "What's the plan?"

Third-Person POV – Detective Marcus Reed

📍 9:50 AM – NYPD Headquarters

Detective Reed had never worked a case like this.

An unknown girl with a bounty on her head.

A half-million-dollar price tag.

It didn't add up.

He scrolled through his newest intel from a contact in the underground.

📄 Message Attachment: Recent Bounty Listings

His eyes froze on the name.

📌 TARGET: EVELYN REYES – $500,000 (ALIVE)

There it was.

A name. A face.

And now?

Marcus Reed finally had his first real lead.

First-Person POV – Evelyn

📍 9:55 AM – Apartment Hallway

We moved quietly.

Claire didn't argue, didn't slow down.

She followed my lead perfectly.

I had just reached the stairwell—

When the door burst open.

Jason Cross stood in the doorway.

Gun drawn.

Shit.
