Chapter 78: Chapter 78: [Bonus]Hitting a snake wasn't enough, You have to cut off every last head.
"You should be aware of your current situation. You say you want to work for me, but the truth is, you're too weak right now. You don't have the strength to be of any use to me."
Kurogai looked at Wanda and Pietro as he spoke. It was the reality of the situation. Although they'd pledged themselves to him, both of them were still young, and their powers were barely developed. As things stood, they weren't much use.
"We'll work hard, we promise," Wanda said quickly, nervous at Kurogai's words. "We'll definitely become useful to you in the future. Please don't abandon us!"
Both siblings looked anxious, clearly fearing he was about to discard them.
"Relax. I didn't say I was going to give up on you," Kurogai replied, a calm edge in his voice. "You're weak now, but you have potential. That means you'll need to train, learn, and grow stronger. Only then will you be of value."
That was his plan. While the siblings might be weak now, their potential was undeniable. There was no way Kurogai intended to throw that away — in fact, he planned to personally oversee their development.
As for how to train them, Kurogai already had ideas.
With Wanda, the path was clear: magic. She was naturally suited for it, and her future ability would even evolve into chaos magic. Since Kurogai had also studied the mystic arts, it made sense for him to guide her onto that path early.
He remembered how, in the future, Wanda's sudden acquisition of chaos magic had left her control unstable, sometimes endangering innocents. It had been evident during the events of Captain America: Civil War. But if she could start learning magic now, then when her powers awakened fully, she would have the knowledge and control to handle it — and perhaps even surpass what she was destined for.
For Pietro, however, Kurogai was less certain.
Quicksilver's abilities revolved around super speed. It would be a waste of time to have him study magic. Instead, what Pietro needed was training tailored to his power.
Maybe turn him into an agent, Kurogai considered. That would help Pietro refine his abilities and tactics. But it might not be the optimal route. If someone like Professor X could help train Pietro to properly develop his mutant abilities, there could be greater potential there. The issue was, Kurogai wasn't entirely sure whether Pietro's speed came from mutant genetics.
Marvel's timeline was, admittedly, a mess. In Avengers: Age of Ultron, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch had been enhanced by Baron Strucker's experiments using the Mind Stone, but there were other possibilities — ancient magic, latent mutant genes, or even connections to beings like Chthon. And of course, in other timelines, the two were known as Magneto's children.
"Tell me about your family," Kurogai said suddenly, wanting to settle the uncertainty. "Your father, for example."
If their powers were of mutant origin, it might change his plans for their development.
"We… we only had a mother," Wanda replied quietly. "But those bad men killed her when we were taken last time. We don't know anything about our father… only that Mom once said he was an incredible person."
They were still too young to have many answers, and the mention of their mother left both siblings visibly saddened.
"I see," Kurogai murmured.
Their words gave him reason to suspect that their father could be Magneto, but it wasn't a certainty. Still, it narrowed down the possible sources of their abilities. If mutant genes were involved, then it made more sense to cultivate those powers instead of chasing down the Mind Stone for enhancements.
In fact, Kurogai had briefly considered waiting for Loki to arrive on Earth and seizing the scepter for its power. But now, there might be a better, cleaner way forward.
"Alright. Finish your food, get some rest. We'll be leaving soon."
A short while later, once the siblings had eaten their fill, Kurogai took them out of the area and transported them back to New York. But he didn't take them to Mary's Orphanage.
While leaving them at the orphanage might have been a safe choice, it risked exposure to S.H.I.E.L.D. Kurogai didn't want that. So instead, he casually tracked down a wealthy property owner, used a little subtle magic to take control, and claimed one of the man's unremarkable properties for himself.
After making the arrangements, Kurogai brought Wanda and Pietro to the property, leaving them there for now. Once they were settled, he headed back to the orphanage alone.
"Little Asta, are you alright? Why did you disappear for so many days?"
As soon as he arrived, Dean Mary hurried over, visibly anxious. It was understandable. Kurogai might not have been gone long by his standards, but with Skye being kidnapped shortly before he left, Mary's worry had only grown.
"I'm fine, Dean Mary. How's Skye?"
"She's okay. Go see her," Mary said, relief softening her face.
Kurogai nodded and made his way to Skye's room.
"Brother Kurogai, you're finally back! I was so worried about you!"
Skye rushed to him the moment he entered, throwing her arms around him. Though she had recovered, she'd remained anxious about his safety. Now, seeing him again, she could finally breathe easy.
"I'm here," Kurogai said softly, holding her for a moment.
After a while, he gently left Skye's room, said goodbye to Dean Mary, and slipped out of the orphanage again.
He still had unfinished business.
He'd vowed to tear Hydra out by the roots — and that wasn't an empty threat. While several high-ranking leaders had already fallen, others still skulked in the shadows. He would find them. And he would wipe them out.
Hitting a snake wasn't enough. You had to cut off every last head. Kurogai would make sure Hydra wouldn't grow another.
