Chapter 98: Chapter 98: Fury's Trap
Nick Fury adjusted his eye patch and leaned forward. "Let's focus on the real issue – The Savior Jason! His unchecked power and authority spell disaster. Can't you see the connection between him and President Freeman? Their backroom dealings rob the American people blind while threatening national security!"
Taking a breath, Fury continued his tirade. "Take these last two days for example. That incompetent fool Freeman lost three aircraft carriers in one battle! Do you understand what that means? Without our naval protection, global chaos erupts! Allies lose faith, enemies smell blood, pirates run riot on shipping lanes..."
Steve Rogers crossed his arms, offering a cold smile. "After this conversation, I could swear you're some Washington career politician! Your words carry the stink of corruption and propaganda - reminds me of the Soviet officers we interrogated back in '45."
The Captain's voice hardened. "I've seen your type before, Fury. Heroes bleed on the front lines while bureaucrats hide behind desks, criticizing their 'failure to follow proper protocols'!"
Fury's bloodshot eye narrowed as he fixed Rogers with an icy stare. "Judge me however you want, soldier. I prioritize global security above all else. What about you? I'm offering you a chance to liberate the world from a dangerous charlatan. What's your excuse for hesitating?"
"Why should I trust you?" Steve asked bluntly, testing boundaries.
"Damn it!" Fury exploded, drawing his sidearm and pointing it directly at the supersoldier's head. "You forget I can end you right here, Rogers?"
The Captain remained perfectly still, confidence radiating from every pore. "After you pull that trigger, you'll be dead within seconds. Try it."
Fury's eye flickered with something unreadable before he burst into harsh laughter. "There's the Captain America I expected! Course you wouldn't crack easy!"
He slammed a business card on the table. "Want to see the world with your own eyes? Here's Howard's boy, Tony Stark - he'll bring you up to speed. Maybe witnessing the Avengers' true nature will change your mind about joining us."
Steve glanced at the card. "No guarantees. Some people stay blind to their own mistakes, no matter how obvious."
Cold fury flashed in Fury's expression. "I'm not wrong here, Captain. Hope you won't be either."
Hours after Rogers departed, Fury stood silently observing his exit.
Agent Hill materialized behind him. "Director, certain he'll return?"
"Doesn't matter."
"Sir?"
"I planted seeds of doubt. They'll grow." Fury turned to face her. "Hill, you didn't have to follow me into this. Prison with Coulson and Natasha would've been safer."
"Why's that?"
"Because what I'm planning exceeds all acceptable risk tiers. The deeper I investigate Jason, the more... inhuman aspects I uncover. He's not what he claims."
"If he's that dangerous, why not evacuate Earth? You have that shuttle clearance..."
Hill glanced skyward.
"I don't abandon my post! I'll use every resource to expose the truth about him. Even if I fail, at least he'll know some people never surrender to tyranny!"
He straightened with new determination. "Is the Injustice League operational?"
Hill exhaled slowly. "Last chance to reconsider. Innocent casualties are guaranteed."
"No choice remains. Calculate acceptable losses."
Nick Fury strode out without looking back.
...
Alcatraz waited in midnight darkness.
A stealth aircraft approached silently through heavy fog. One precise beam disabled Worthington Base's power grid, plunging the facility into blackness.
Alarms blared as emergency lighting activated too late. The invisible craft touched down like a ghost, releasing several black-clad figures. Nick Fury led the assault team.
"Multiple-Man, you're up," Fury commanded the leather-jacketed man beside him.
The operative nicknamed Multiple-Man grinned wickedly. His body rippled like mercury, birthing two perfect duplicates. These copies jogged toward nearby buildings, emerging with military-grade weapons.
"I am my own army," Clone boasted as dozens of identical copies materialized from his body, each grabbing assault rifles from stockpiles.
Within moments, a small battalion of armed clones stood ready.
"That's just the beginning. Bring more firepower!" Clone laughed maniacally.
"Sufficient!" Fury cut him off. "Clear our path. Move out!"
...
Inside the facility, Jason waited patiently with his team. Government-sanctioned superheroes needed no stealth to access research laboratories. His assembled mutants - Professor X, Storm, Phoenix, Cyclops, and Colossus - surrounded a bald child sitting cross-legged.
Wolverine remained absent by design. The ten-year-old boy they studied, nicknamed Leech, possessed a unique ability: proximity to him neutralized mutant powers entirely. Logan's adamantium skeleton would transform from asset to agonizing liability near the child.
Jimmy - real name revealed in medical documents - studied them with innocent curiosity while everyone gawked.
Charles Xavier asked softly, "What happens to him now?"
"He comes to Avengers Base," Jason replied.
"And then?"
"Housing, education, protection - everything a child needs."
The Professor's silence spoke volumes.
Jason's eyebrows shot up. "Professor, you can't seriously be considering eliminating him?"
"No!" Charles protested, then added slowly, "...but he represents existential danger to our species."
Xavier had glimpsed the Director's mind earlier, discovering files on "mutant cure" derived from Jimmy's blood. Parents worldwide would queue to "normalize" their powered children.
Jason's grin turned calculating. "Professor, interested in establishing a Mutant Treatment Center?"
"What?" Xavier looked confused.
"Expand Xavier Institute's reputation globally. Advertise having a method to revert mutations. Those wanting normalcy receive treatment. Others continue using powers freely. Real choice, real freedom."
"NO!" Storm burst out. "Mutation isn't a disease requiring cures! It's divine blessing, evolutionary advancement!"
"Sure it's blessed," Jason countered, "for the lucky few. Beautiful people with impressive powers naturally celebrate being 'evolved.' But what about the silent majority?"
He gestured broadly. "They don't get weather control or telepathy. They get blue fur, extra limbs, facial deformities. Just look at Jimmy - hairless at ten, confined to labs. Is he celebrating his 'gift'? Would he choose mutation over normality?
"They're society's rejects - too mutant for humans, too ordinary for X-Men standards. Living isolated, miserable lives while you elite mutants praise evolution!"
Storm stumbled for words. Everyone shifted uncomfortably.
"Whether Professor X or Magneto, you're mutant royalty making decisions for the powerless. Why deny desperate people choices? If transformation removes their scales or tails, why forbid it?"
Jean touched her temples. "Professor, why hide this from us?"
Xavier stammered, "Because our resources... we couldn't help everyone..."
"Exactly!" Jason nodded. "Xavier's School protects dozens while thousands suffer in shadows. Experimented on, hunted, executed. Your powers can't save them all."
Distant sounds of combat echoed through corridors.
Jason activated his Absolute Zero field, gesturing to Jimmy. "Come on, let's get you safe. You're free now."
He turned to Xavier. "Professor, make yourself useful. Disable these mutant terrorists."
Charles concentrated, then frowned deeply. "Something's wrong. My telepathy isn't connecting!"
Suspicion flickered across Jason's face moments before figures emerged from darkness.
Nick Fury stepped forward, displaying custom earpieces. "Suddenly doubting yourself, Charles? This tech blocks telepathy - alien design, centuries beyond Earth's capabilities. Wish I had enough for everyone."
Cyclops stepped forward aggressively. "Think some gear makes you invincible? You're surrounded!"
Fury's smile widened. "Who said only professors are compromised? Pulse, your turn!"
Blue energy rippled outward. Cyclops instinctively checked for injuries, finding none. But his signature ruby visor energy began fading!
"Your powers... dissipating!" Scott realized with horror.
Behind him, Storm's weather manipulation, Colossus's metal form - all were weakening rapidly.
"Surprised?" Fury sneered. "Jimmy's not unique. My colleague Pulse temporarily neutralizes powers. Brief window, but sufficient for eliminating you all!"
Panic clearly registered on the X-Men's faces while Jason remained calm.
"Clever ambush," Jason admitted. "Your target was never the boy - just bait for us. Someone leaked our presence here, didn't they?"
