Chapter 41: Chapter 41: The Green-Eyed Flame
"Tony Stark!" Betty Ross rushed forward and caught Aetheris as he stumbled.
He looked utterly wrecked—his armor in pieces, sparking like dying fireworks.
"Paul, disengage," Aetheris commanded.
The shattered Mark II Hellfire Armor dropped to the ground like a heap of twisted metal.
Exhausted, Aetheris leaned into Betty's chest, finding momentary comfort in her embrace.
"You okay, Stark?" Betty asked, voice full of concern.
"If you hold me any tighter, I might just pass out," he muttered, inhaling deeply, overwhelmed by the softness and scent of her skin.
"I'm going to check on that Ivan guy!" Aetheris suddenly sprang up with a swift kip-up, reluctantly pulling himself out of Betty's... comfort zone.
"...Wait, where did he go?"
He stared blankly at the now-empty spectator stands.
"I didn't see," Betty said, flustered. "I was focused on you."
"This isn't how it went down in the movie," Aetheris muttered. In the original plot, Ivan's arc reactor never exploded. But now? That blast could've wiped out a city block.
"Did I mess up the timeline that badly? Has everything already spiraled out of control?"
He couldn't shake the unease. His edge in this world came from knowing what came next—and sure, the system had helped here and there but ultimately, it was his foresight and skill that carried him.
Now though… Spiderling, Ethan, Victor, Norman Osborn, Ivan… all had deviated from their original paths.
What kind of butterfly effect would this bring to the final showdown?
Maybe it'll be fine… right?
"Whatever. It's early days still. Let's just live in the moment. Whether it's Thanos or Dormammu—none of it matters if I keep getting stronger."
"Tony, are you really okay?" Betty pressed.
"Of course. Want to head up to Wushan right now? I guarantee your love will overflow like the Mississippi in spring." Aetheris flashed a devilish grin.
"You rascal… now's really not the time." She bit her lip. "And after all that noise, the entire campus and probably the cops too—are heading this way."
"Oh, Betty! Thank God you're safe!" A man in a neatly-pressed sweater hurried over, looking scholarly and refined.
"Ahem. This is my boyfriend—Tim Blake," Betty said with a nervous smile.
"Oh, hey! Nice to meet you. I'm..."
"I know who you are. Mr. Tony Stark," Blake said, shaking his hand with both of his. "It's an honor. Truly."
"You know me?"
"Who doesn't? The great Iron Man. The entire country knows your name."
Aetheris smirked. Being this famous wasn't bad. Not bad at all.
"Thank you for protecting my beloved. Without her, I'm not sure I'd have had the will to live." Blake's words carried sincere gratitude.
"Oh, it was nothing. Just lending a hand." Aetheris suddenly recalled how just minutes ago, he'd been clinging to this man's girlfriend. He felt... a little guilty.
But mostly thrilled.
Ah, now I understand the kind of joy that tempted even emperors.
"Well, if there's nothing else, I'll be on my way."
He waved and turned to go, but Betty slyly made a phone-call gesture behind Blake's back, throwing in a cheeky wink.
Prim and proper on the outside but burning with fire underneath.
His "golden staff" twitched. The thrill of playing with fire right in front of someone else's boyfriend? It was exhilarating.
Aetheris glanced at Blake with a mix of sympathy and amusement. The man practically had a neon-green aura glowing from his head.
Then came the crisp clack of heels behind him.
Natasha approached, cool and commanding.
"Mr. Stark, why does chaos follow you like a lost puppy?"
"This wasn't my fault! That guy with the lightning whips ambushed me!" Aetheris felt wronged beyond belief.
All he wanted was to console a traumatized professor. How could he have known this mess would unfold?
If he'd known, he would've just booked a hotel room.
Clearly, outdoor adventures in America were riskier than expected.
"Now I've got to clean up your mess again," Natasha said, annoyed. "What is it with you rich types sneaking into college campuses in the middle of the night?"
She eyed Betty in the distance, her expression unreadable.
"Wait a minute… don't tell me you've got something going on with her too?"
Women and their intuition. It was terrifying. And almost always right when it came to love.
To all the cheating men out there—don't assume your woman doesn't know. She's just waiting for you to hand her the rope.
She doesn't say anything, but she knows.
"Of course not! I just had a long day and decided to go for a jog around campus to unwind," Aetheris offered weakly.
"Jog? Really? This campus is thirty minutes from your company and an hour from your home!"
Natasha looked at him like he must think she was born yesterday.
"Maybe I like exercising in far-off places? Tony Leung flies to London just to feed pigeons!"
"Who's Tony Leung?"
"...Ah. Right. Doesn't exist in this universe." Aetheris sighed.
"Need a lift? You look like you just walked out of a war zone." Natasha surveyed the destruction around them.
"Nah, I'm good. Just a Soviet martial arts expert. Nothing I can't handle." He waved her off.
Meanwhile, outside Calf University, an armored vehicle raced through the night.
Inside lay a severely injured Ivan, strapped to a stretcher. Two masked medics administered glucose and oxygen.
"How's he doing? He's not gonna die, is he?" a bespectacled man asked coldly.
"He'll live, boss. Tough guy. Just a few broken ribs. Give him some rest and he'll bounce back," one of the medics answered.
"Good. We can't afford to lose talent like him. The future of Hans Industries depends on it."
The bespectacled man smiled in satisfaction.
Who would've thought watching a random livestream would uncover a hidden gem? Those few donations and super-chats were worth every penny.
Poor Ivan, dazed and battered, felt like he was falling endlessly into darkness.
"Faster. Step on it. Get back to Hans Group immediately!" the man barked.
"Yes, boss!"
