Chapter 55: Chapter 64: Bounty Hunter vs War Machine - Part 4
Ahsoka paced anxiously in front of Gunray's detention cell, her agitation clearly visible to anyone observing her restless movements. Barriss watched her fellow Padawan with understanding, feeling the same overwhelming concern and frustration.
"Luminara is an exceptional Jedi Master, but she has no idea how much chaos that bald witch Ventress can create," Ahsoka said with obvious worry.
Barriss calmly reminded her: "Colonel Rhodes is currently facing the bounty hunter alone. Although he has demonstrated considerable combat skills, he is fighting single-handedly against what appears to be a monster-like being."
Ahsoka's anxiety was making it difficult for her to think clearly, and she said with growing frustration: "We cannot simply stand here doing nothing while they risk their lives against these two extremely dangerous adversaries."
Barriss hesitated, torn between duty and conscience: "But our direct orders were—"
She couldn't complete her thought, as conflicting emotions and responsibilities filled her mind. Her genuine concern for their two comrades battled constantly against her sense of duty to their assigned mission.
Observing this internal struggle, Captain Argyus of the Senate Commandos approached the two young Jedi and offered his perspective on their dilemma: "Sometimes, being a truly good soldier means doing what you believe is morally right, regardless of orders. This capacity for independent moral judgment is what makes us superior to droids."
These words seemed to resolve some of the conflict that Barriss was experiencing, and Ahsoka nodded emphatically in agreement.
Barriss still showed hesitation: "But we cannot simply abandon our assigned duties, can we?" However, her tone was obviously less firm than before.
Argyus proposed what appeared to be an ideal solution to their predicament: "You two go assist the General and the Colonel. Commander Gree and I will remain here to maintain security around Gunray."
Barriss and Ahsoka exchanged meaningful glances for several moments before Barriss asked with uncertainty: "Are you absolutely certain about this arrangement?"
Argyus smiled reassuringly: "Of course. The sooner you two provide assistance, the sooner this battle will conclude, and we can successfully complete our mission objectives."
Both Padawans nodded with determination and departed quickly toward the sounds of combat.
It didn't take long for Luminara and War Machine to locate Durge, as their path was marked by the corpses of clone troopers who had been systematically slaughtered. Following this grim trail, they quickly arrived at the site of the ongoing battle.
Durge stood waiting in the center of the main hangar bay where the fighting had originally begun, holding a struggling clone trooper by the throat while grinning with sadistic pleasure. When he noticed his two primary enemies approaching, he laughed maniacally, then deliberately broke the clone's neck directly in front of them.
Durge carelessly tossed the lifeless body aside and spoke with mocking sarcasm: "I trust neither of you wants to continue fighting in such a confined space."
When Rhodes witnessed this cold-blooded execution, limitless murderous intent flashed in his eyes. Since arriving in this galaxy, he had never felt such an overwhelming desire to kill another being. He stared at Durge with pure hatred, while the bounty hunter smiled with apparent unconcern about the massacre he had committed.
Luminara also fixed the bounty hunter with an intense stare, her eyes focused with deadly intent: "Bounty hunter, you will pay a severe price for every life you have taken today."
Durge taunted back: "I'm certain I'll pay some price eventually, but I'm afraid neither of you possesses the capability to collect it."
Rhodes had no interest in further verbal exchanges and immediately fired incendiary rounds, determined to completely destroy this inhuman creature.
Durge's body was engulfed by flames from the incendiary weapons, but he continued standing as if unaffected by the intense heat.
Luminara rushed forward while War Machine flew directly over her head, both coordinating their assault.
In a rather bizarre display, Durge brought both hands to his chest as if preparing to flex his muscular development.
As the two combatants closed distance, Durge suddenly released his grip, and two massive fists shot forward toward them like launched projectiles.
"Shit!" Rhodes yelled as he attempted to alter his flight trajectory, but it was too late—Durge's fist struck him with devastating force.
Luminara ducked and rolled to avoid impact, then quickly slashed at Durge's extended arm with her lightsaber, severing nerve tissue and muscle fibers. She stepped back defensively and saw War Machine trapped within Durge's other massive hand, prompting her to rush to his assistance.
Suddenly, she sensed a warning through the Force and turned to see additional appendages extending toward her position. She dodged quickly while swinging her lightsaber to sever the limbs reaching for her.
Rhodes had been struggling desperately to break free from Durge's crushing grip when he suddenly felt the hand holding him loosen and release him to the ground. Looking up, he was shocked to see that the severed hand holding him had fallen to the deck, while the detached appendage actually called out for help from its owner.
Standing before him were none other than Barriss Offee and Ahsoka Tano, both with lightsabers ignited and ready for combat against Durge.
"Barriss! Ahsoka!" Luminara exclaimed with surprise and concern.
The two young Jedi couldn't bring themselves to look directly at Luminara, like children who had disobeyed clear instructions.
Finally, Ahsoka gathered the courage to meet her gaze and said: "I know, I know you ordered us to stay at our posts, but—" she began somewhat defensively.
Luminara sighed deeply and nodded to show her understanding, then said with resignation: "Well, since you are both here now, let's deal with this threat together and attempt to end this battle quickly."
Durge's damaged body had already fully regenerated. The distributed nervous system and incredible regenerative capabilities of the Gen'Dai species were simply too powerful. He smiled with malicious anticipation: "You know, the last time I killed a Jedi Knight was more than a century ago. Now I can resume that pleasant activity, beginning with you three Jedi."
Rhodes warned the two young women: "You both need to stay extremely alert. This creature is incredibly powerful, and his abilities exceed anything you could imagine."
Both young Jedi nodded solemnly and raised their lightsabers in defensive positions.
The hangar fell silent except for the distant sounds of fires and emergency alarms indicating the ferocity of the ongoing battle throughout the ship. Then, in an explosive instant, both sides charged forward simultaneously.
Durge's body expanded dramatically, and numerous appendages extended outward, reaching toward all four attacking opponents.
All combatants dodged the strikes expertly—Luminara and Barriss slashing away the reaching limbs while War Machine took to the air, firing his wrist-mounted assault weapons.
Several rounds struck Durge, but with limited visible effect, and the bounty hunter grabbed the wreckage of a nearby destroyed starfighter and hurled it at War Machine.
Rhodes deftly avoided the incoming debris and flew directly toward Durge, who kept retreating while preparing to launch another devastating attack.
At the critical moment, War Machine pulled up sharply and threw a flashbang grenade at Durge while shouting to the others: "Close your eyes!"
The flashbang exploded with blinding intensity, temporarily incapacitating Durge, who roared in fury. His healing factor quickly addressed the temporary blindness, but when his vision cleared, he suddenly convulsed as he noticed the azure lightsaber blade protruding from his chest. He slowly looked behind him to see Barriss Offee gripping her weapon tightly, having pierced completely through his torso.
What the young Jedi didn't anticipate was that the bounty hunter began laughing softly: "Haha... clever little one." Then he spun around and struck Barriss with tremendous force, sending her flying across the hangar.
Barriss tumbled to the deck, clenched her teeth against the pain, and asked in complete bewilderment: "Why are you still standing? My blade clearly severed your spinal column—"
Durge sneered with contempt: "Sweet child, I possess virtually no skeletal structure, let alone a centralized nervous system. Are you truly naive enough to believe that a lightsaber through my chest would be fatal?"
Then, with incredible speed that defied his massive size, Durge reached the young Jedi in an instant and seized her by the hair. Barriss cried out in pain and desperately tried to use her hands to break free from Durge's control, but her efforts were completely futile against his overwhelming strength.
