Chapter 344: Chapter 344
Sokovia, remote wilderness.
On the ground, a mass of Hydra soldiers clad in dark combat uniforms and clutching submachine guns spread across the terrain, forming a shrinking circle around their target. High above, three helicopters floated, positioned to complete the trap with the soldiers below, hemming in the mission's objective.
At the center of this deadly enclosure, a red flame-colored doorway stood, and from it stepped a blond man draped in a dark green robe.
"Coulson, it seems you've found yourself in quite a predicament!"
Wanda, seeing this impossible scene, felt light-headed, her mouth falling open in speechless shock.
"Professor Lockhart… Thank you for coming." Coulson's voice held a hint of relief as he spoke.
Lockhart's eyes fell on Wanda and Pietro, and with a knowing smile, he replied, "No trouble at all. It seems S.H.I.E.L.D. has finally located the individuals I was seeking."
Coulson's smile turned rueful. Both he and the director had considered this possibility; hence, the emergency crystal for help.
Apparently, S.H.I.E.L.D.'s movements hadn't escaped Lockhart's expectations.
Meanwhile, Lockhart's sudden arrival seemed to jolt the Hydra forces from their surprise.
"Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., you are surrounded. If you surrender, you may yet live."
"Our commander has said that—"
"Silence!" Lockhart interrupted, his voice cold.
With a swift wave of his wand—
Diffindo!
A translucent blade of energy streaked from Lockhart's wand, cutting through the air toward a nearby helicopter.
Snap! Snap! Snap!
Like a laser slicing metal, the chopper split in half under his spell, its frame crumbling mid-air. It fell to the earth with a tremendous crash!
Boom!
Fire erupted from the impact, dust and debris exploding into the air, sending a fierce wave toward the group.
Calmly, Lockhart raised his wand again, and thick, pale golden walls rose up around him and his allies. The walls angled inward at the top, forming a protective dome.
Through the shimmering shield, they watched dirt and metal fragments bounce harmlessly off the walls.
"Are you a…wizard?" Wanda asked in awe, gathering her courage.
After seeing Coulson's invisibility cloak, she'd suspected as much. Yet witnessing it in real life left her stunned.
"Yes, Wanda." Lockhart gave her a gentle nod. "You're safe now. I won't let anything happen to you."
He shared a look with Coulson, who nodded in silent agreement.
Understanding the cue, Coulson introduced, "Wanda, this is Professor Lockhart, a skilled wizard. S.H.I.E.L.D. came to Sokovia on his behalf—to find you and your brother."
Wanda and Pietro exchanged glances, their faces lighting up with disbelief and relief. Pietro's voice trembled with anticipation. "Professor Lockhart… you were looking for us?"
"Indeed."
But before Lockhart could continue—
Clatter! Clatter! Clatter!
The downing of the helicopter triggered a furious counterattack from Hydra. A storm of bullets rained down on the golden barrier, making it shudder with the repeated impacts. Lockhart could feel the defensive wall's energy draining as it absorbed each hit; the shield would not hold indefinitely.
With a nod to Coulson, Lockhart tightened his grip on the wand, reinforcing the barrier's magical resilience.
Then, he stepped forward, his figure bathed in golden light as he moved through the protective shield onto the open battlefield.
Wanda's eyes widened, but Coulson moved to reassure her, his voice low yet firm, underscoring Lockhart's formidable abilities.
Lockhart glanced over the bullets streaking toward him and murmured an incantation.
In an instant, a transparent ripple enveloped him, and every bullet seemed to phase through his body, dissipating as if he were a mere apparition.
Feeling the effects of Chaos Magic flow through him, Lockhart allowed himself a slight smile.
Chaos magic was a fascinating force, one he'd been studying intently. Though he'd only scratched the surface, his research had yielded some effective results.
By channeling his intentions verbally, he could manipulate reality in subtle ways, redirecting basic attacks with minimal effort.
As the Hydra soldiers realized their attacks were useless, Lockhart's smile deepened, his gaze sweeping over their ranks.
"Flame."
With a single word, an inferno sprang up, searing the soldiers caught within. The flames obeyed his will, shifting as his eyes moved, engulfing Hydra soldiers in an unrelenting blaze.
Whoosh! Whoosh!
Agonized cries filled the air as many of the soldiers succumbed to the flames, their voices twisted with pain.
Wanda watched, eyes wide with fascination.
"Mr. Coulson, why do you think Professor Lockhart wants us? Could he… teach us magic?" Pietro whispered, still in awe of the display.
Wanda looked at Pietro, sharing his curiosity.
"Don't worry. Professor Lockhart certainly has good intentions." Coulson nodded, his tone carrying a hint of envy. "And who knows? Maybe he will teach you magic."
Wanda and Pietro's eyes sparkled with hope, and they watched Lockhart's battle with even greater interest.
Natasha and Rumlow kept their distance, observing the scene with barely concealed excitement; the rapid rise and fall of their chests betrayed their inner turmoil.
Lockhart approached a Hydra soldier who lay half-burned, but still alive.
"Where is your base?" Lockhart's voice was smooth but unyielding.
Legilimens!
Before the soldier could respond, Lockhart pierced into his mind, pulling information straight from his thoughts.
In seconds, Lockhart learned everything he needed about the Hydra base's layout.
With a flick of his wand—
Diffindo! Diffindo!
He dispatched two more aircraft hovering nearby, the blades of magic slicing through their frames. The choppers exploded into fireballs as they plummeted to the ground, their debris scattering across the field.
"Breeze."
"Suppression."
With each word, Lockhart's magic took effect. The heat waves shifted into a gentle wind, while the metal shards and dirt were pressed down to the ground, contained by an unseen force.
Within moments, the helicopters and soldiers had either been neutralized or forced to retreat.
"All clear."
Lockhart lowered the shield, turning back to Coulson, Wanda, and the others. His voice held a calm reassurance.
"Professor Lockhart, we can't thank you enough." Coulson nodded in gratitude. "We wouldn't have made it without you."
"It's nothing," Lockhart replied with a wave. "Besides, you helped me locate Wanda and Pietro."
Lockhart glanced at Coulson. "Are you staying in Sokovia or heading back to the U.S.? I can transport you directly if you prefer."
Coulson hesitated briefly. "The U.S. would be best."
With a nod, Lockhart swirled his wand, conjuring a portal that shimmered with the familiar sights of New York.
Coulson, Natasha, and Rumlow exchanged glances before stepping through, offering Lockhart a final wave of gratitude.
Wanda hesitated, as if ready to follow, but Lockhart held up a hand.
"Wanda, Pietro, do you have any loose ends in Sokovia?"
The siblings shared a glance before shaking their heads. There was nothing left for them here.
"Good. You can rest at my place; there are matters we need to discuss."
Sokovia, Hydra underground base.
In the command room, Baron Strucker watched the screen with an intense gaze, transfixed by the footage of Lockhart's effortless destruction of Hydra's forces.
"Space, fire, an unseen strike…"
Strucker murmured to himself, his eyes alight with an almost feverish determination.
"Pierce truly keeps his secrets well. I must get my hands on this… Professor Lockhart."
He dialed an untraceable number, his voice edged with urgency.
"Pierce, I need details."
New York, Pierce's residence.
Pierce's expression darkened as he placed the phone down. The demand had been more than curt, even from someone of Strucker's standing.
Yet as the corners of his mouth lifted in a cold smirk, Pierce's mind whirred. Testing the strength of this Professor Lockhart was a priority now.
Sokovia, Hydra's hidden base.
Sunlight bathed the remote grassland as Lockhart hovered mid-air, gazing down at the camouflaged landscape below.
The base's disguise was near perfect, almost impossible for the untrained eye to detect. Had he not gleaned memories from captured soldiers, he might have overlooked it entirely.
Facing the unassuming plain, Lockhart whispered, "Sink."
A surge of magic pulsed through him, and the earth trembled, fissures spreading in all directions, gradually revealing glimmers of silver-steel beneath the soil.
As the base's structure came into view, the skies darkened with a swarm of unmanned drones, strategically encircling him.
Without warning, they unleashed a hail of gunfire.
"Reverse."
Lockhart's voice rang out, and in an instant—
Boom! Boom! Boom!
The bullets warped and vanished three meters before him, as if pulled into another dimension. They reappeared moments later, flying back in their original trajectories.
As the bullets reversed, drones exploded and crashed down, and Lockhart remained unharmed.
Floating down, he took measured steps forward, each one causing larger cracks to open up in the earth, exposing more of the steel framework.
He could see Hydra researchers and experimental subjects staring up in shock from within the widening crevices.
"Float."
With his command, scientists, soldiers, and subjects lifted from the underground base, hovering as fear twisted their faces.
Their panicked voices created a cacophony of noise.
Too loud.
"Silence."
Instantly, all sound died away, leaving only the terror on their faces.
Lockhart moved through the Hydra crowd, using Legilimency to confirm each person's identity and role—scientists, guards, commanders, superiors.
Finally, he halted in front of a man in black leather, whose mind remained disturbingly blank.
Strucker.
He couldn't read anything from this one's thoughts. Narrowing his gaze, Lockhart reached forward, pressing a hand to the man's forehead.
A robot double, he realized, inwardly scoffing at Hydra's cowardice.
It didn't matter. The personnel he'd captured were more than sufficient to help S.H.I.E.L.D. dismantle Hydra's operations in Sokovia.
Suddenly—
Crackle!
Electric energy surged across the area. Lockhart's senses prickled, the spatial magic around him wavering.
He felt a shiver run down his spine.
Peering into the distance, a black speck caught his eye.
His gaze sharpened, magnifying the view with a simple spell.
A faint flash appeared on the horizon.
Nuclear bomb.
