After leaving Flourish and Blotts, thanked profusely by the shopkeeper, George and the group continued their stroll through Diagon Alley.
After purchasing some scattered magical study tools, Hermione expressed her desire to buy a pet.
For the past two years, she had spent most of her money on books. But seeing that everyone else had their own pets while she had none, Hermione couldn't help but feel envious. This year, she finally decided to get one for herself.
Her first choice, of course, was an owl. This way, she wouldn't need to visit the Owl Post Office every time she wanted to send a letter.
"It seems some things are simply destined," George murmured to himself as he watched Hermione emerge from the pet shop holding a ginger cat with a face that looked as though it had been smashed flat against a wall.
With the pet shopping done, it was already noon. The group headed to the Leaky Cauldron for lunch.
It was there that George met Arthur Weasley for the first time—a talented alchemist and an enthusiast of combining magic with Muggle technology. He was also Ron's father.
Arthur was sitting at the bar reading the Daily Prophet. On the front page was a picture of a gaunt and feral-looking Sirius Black, snarling menacingly.
"You're back. And who's this?" Arthur asked, setting down the paper and looking at the unfamiliar George.
Ginny quickly stepped forward, eager to introduce him.
"Dad, this is George! The one I've told you about before."
"Oh, George! Of course, I've heard about you—the youngest national Quidditch player and the youngest recipient of the Medal of Bravery. Ginny talks about you constantly, calling you the most outstanding first-year wizard," Arthur said, his eyes full of admiration.
Although it was his first time meeting George, Arthur knew it was thanks to George's persuasion that Ginny had found the courage to reveal the truth about Voldemort's diary.
"Good afternoon, Mr. Weasley. I've heard you're a master in alchemy. I've been teaching myself the subject recently and would love the opportunity to ask you some questions," George said politely.
Arthur Weasley's skill in alchemy was undeniable. His modification of the flying car was evidence enough. Moreover, Fred and George Weasley's magical prank products, which often incorporated alchemical principles, were likely influenced by their father's guidance.
For George, consulting Arthur on alchemy seemed like an excellent opportunity.
"Master? Oh no, not at all! It's just a hobby of mine," Arthur replied, waving his hand modestly.
"But if you're interested, I'd be happy to discuss it with you. Just the other day, I was wondering—what if we enchanted a Muggle refrigerator with an Undetectable Extension Charm? That way, even during the hottest summer, you could enjoy the comforts of winter indoors!"
Once Arthur started talking about his interests, he became unstoppable.
George, recognizing the value of the moment, began bringing up some of the issues he had encountered while studying alchemy.
The conversation continued for hours, and before anyone realized it, evening had arrived.
"In hindsight, I should've set aside some time this summer to visit Ron's house," George thought wistfully as they ate dinner at the Leaky Cauldron that evening.
Arthur's alchemical knowledge was undeniably impressive. In just half a day of discussion, George felt he had made significant progress in his understanding of alchemy.
Unlike the dense and hard-to-grasp language of alchemical textbooks, Arthur explained even the most challenging concepts in simple, easy-to-understand terms.
If Hogwarts ever introduced an alchemy course, George believed Arthur would make an excellent professor.
"Well, I'll have to wait until next summer. In the meantime, I can always discuss things with Fred and George Weasley," George thought.
The Weasley twins' alchemy skills were primarily applied to creating prank items, but those same items could double as effective tools or weapons if used creatively.
For instance:
- *Ton-Tongue Toffee*: Eating it causes the victim's tongue to swell to enormous proportions, making speaking impossible and causing great discomfort.
- *Biting Doorknob*: Grabbing it might result in a nasty bite, capable of injuring a hand.
- *Constipation Caramel*: Consuming it results in prolonged constipation, rendering the victim unable to use the bathroom.
- *Canary Creams*: Eating one temporarily transforms the consumer into a canary before reverting back to their original form after a minute.
The list went on.
The next day, George packed his belongings and, accompanied by his owl, Pigwidgeon, headed to the Leaky Cauldron.
Today was the start of the new school year, and the Ministry of Magic had arranged for two enchanted cars to take the Weasley family to King's Cross Station. George decided to hitch a ride with them.
According to Arthur, this special arrangement was because his flying car was gone, and the Ministry had kindly decided to accommodate him.
But George knew the real reason—it was because Minister of Magic Cornelius Fudge was worried that Sirius Black might attack Harry.
Ever since Sirius had escaped from Azkaban, Fudge had been under immense pressure. If the Boy Who Lived were to be killed in revenge by Sirius, Fudge's position as Minister would be over in an instant.
To secure his position, Fudge had even issued a massive bounty: 10,000 Galleons for anyone who could capture Sirius Black.
Considering the Minister's official monthly salary was only 400 Galleons, 10,000 was an astronomical sum for the average wizard.
"I can't wait to get on the train—at least at Hogwarts, I'll finally be free of Percy," Ron grumbled.
He was wearing a collarless long-sleeve jumper, dragging his luggage behind him as he complained to Harry.
"Just now, he yelled at me for spilling tea on that picture of Penelope Clearwater. You know, his girlfriend. She was so mad, she hid behind the frame—because her nose was covered in stains!"
Ron noticed George standing nearby and immediately raised his hand in greeting.
"Morning, George!"
"Good morning, Harry. Good morning, Ron," George replied, lifting his hand in response.
At that moment, Ginny's frustrated voice echoed from upstairs.
"Mum, I've already checked my things! I didn't forget anything! Stop nagging me!"
However, as soon as she heard Ron and George greeting each other, her tone changed instantly.
"Okay, dearest Mum, I'll go check again," she said sweetly.
"Harry, it looks like you're no longer my sister's favorite idol," Ron remarked with a shrug.
Harry let out a sigh of relief.
"I think that's not a bad thing," he admitted.
Between Ginny's crush last year and first-year Colin Creevey constantly pestering him, Harry felt like losing Ginny's attention was a weight off his shoulders.
"It's okay, Crookshanks. I'll let you out as soon as we're on the train," Hermione said softly, comforting the ginger cat in her wicker basket as she brushed past Ron and descended the stairs.
"Hi, George. You're always so punctual."
"You can't let that monster out! What about poor Scabbers?" Ron protested, standing upright with indignation.
But Hermione completely ignored him, grabbing George by the arm and leading him toward the Leaky Cauldron's front door.
"George, let's wait for the car outside."
"Did you have a fight with Ron?" George asked with a knowing smile.
Watching kids squabble was, at times, a rather amusing pastime.
