Chapter 20: Chapter 19: Invasion of the Vampire Mansion
"Thank you for your help, Michael." After the subway battle, Erik and Michael Covin took Jala'wa and the woman who was injured by stray bullets to a nearby hospital, where Michael worked. As a surgeon at the hospital, he had certain privileges that allowed him to admit Jala'wa, a reincarnator with no identification, as a temporary patient.
To cover for Jala'wa's identity, Erik claimed he was an illegal migrant laborer. After all, there were many South Asians living in the UK illegally, and Jala'wa, arriving here, blended in like a tree hidden in a forest, barely noticeable. Although Michael's superior looked displeased, Erik had his ways. After handing over a thick stack of green bills, Michael's superior reluctantly gave his consent, turning a blind eye and allowing Jala'wa to stay.
"I'm sorry, Erik. I couldn't be of much help. Honestly, the money you paid for the doctor's visit would've been enough. Nicholas really values this," Michael said, feeling guilty for not being able to help the man who saved his life. He didn't know that he would have been fine anyway and assumed Erik had risked his life to save him in the gunfire.
"Sometimes it's better to solve problems simply," Erik replied nonchalantly, noticing that Michael was staring at the injured woman who had been shot and was now unconscious from blood loss after surgery.
"You care about her?" Erik asked.
"...Yes. My wife also died in an accident. She was severely injured, but no one helped her."
Michael replied as he watched the sleeping woman through the hospital window. The young man, around 27 or 28, now had a weariness in his eyes that made him seem older.
Erik understood his feelings and patted his shoulder reassuringly. "At least you saved a family today, didn't you?"
Michael nodded, his expression softening.
Erik admired this young man. Though he was just an ordinary person now, he had the courage to rescue an innocent during a shootout. Unfortunately, he didn't know that soon, due to the bloodline he inherited from the immortal Alexander Covinas, the disguised werewolf king Lucian would target him, intending to transform him into a new species combining both werewolf and vampire bloodlines. Not only would he be forced to abandon his old way of life, but he would lose his human identity, eventually captured and placed in a research lab, immersed in formaldehyde for display.
Thankfully, Michael met Erik. Regardless of whether this world was a playground for the main deity, Erik would give him a chance, offering him a different fate.
On the other side of the city, there was a mansion in the style of a medieval noble palace. The overall layout resembled Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, but it was more extravagant and decaying, with ornate and luxurious decorations that, under the continuous drizzle, appeared both splendid and somewhat ominous.
The mansion was filled with nobles and gentlemen, all gathered to welcome a messenger from across the ocean. He brought news of Elder Emilia of the Vampire Clan. In the near future, this elder would awaken another elder, Marcus, to take her place in leading the vampire world.
Although this was supposed to be a transfer of power, the men and women present had long since gotten used to it. They treated this solemn ritual like a grand feast. The gentlemen wore formal attire and engaged in lively discussions, while the noblewomen, adorned with elegant dress, fan themselves delicately, giggling playfully. No one seemed alert or concerned. Emilia slept, Marcus awoke; Marcus rested, and Viktor took over. Under the rotating rule of these three elders, the vampire world remained unchanged, as certain as the eternal existence of darkness.
In their long lives, such transitions were not uncommon, yet they were unaware that, with the help of internal spies, the werewolves, once thought to be nearly eradicated, had been secretly regrowing underground. They were now preparing for a full assault on the vampire clan. Emilia, who had come from afar, had suppressed her powers and was about to enter hibernation—she would be the first target before the werewolves launched their full-scale attack.
Despite the seemingly peaceful atmosphere, not everyone felt safe. Among the vampire soldiers, Selena, a distinguished Death Walker, was filled with unease. The discovery at the subway station made her keenly aware that the werewolves' power was not as weak as the legends suggested. They had not only regained strength underground but were also plotting something secretive. Unfortunately, everyone had become complacent with their stable lives and completely disregarded her hard-earned information. Almost everyone laughed at her warnings.
Selena was a determined person. She was resolved to prove herself through her own strength. The camera she had found at the subway station provided her with crucial clues.
"You're wasting your time," her friend Erica said dismissively. Erica was a young, voluptuous vampire with seductive looks and a figure that could rival the moon goddess. She was dressed in a revealing low-cut outfit that showed off her fair skin. While her charm was slightly less than Selena's, she was still a captivating sight. Right now, the messenger from Emilia was about to speak downstairs, but Selena, the most beautiful vampire of their generation, was still upstairs, browsing through the footage on her computer. As a noble of the blood, this was quite disrespectful. Erica had been ordered to quickly help Selena change into her evening dress and accompany local vampire leader, Klein, to the ceremony.
"Oh, this one," Erica finally chose a dress. "You absolutely have to wear this, it's perfect."
Selena didn't respond and continued to review the video. When the footage reached the part where the men appeared at the subway station, she suddenly paused. In the middle of the frame were two men walking together. The man in front was an ordinary person who had been drawn to the subway platform by his own appearance, while the one behind him was a man with deep, dark eyes, like the embodiment of darkness.
"They're looking for you," Selena muttered to herself. People with power usually associate with their own kind. With Erik as a comparison, she instinctively dismissed Michael.
Erica, curious, leaned over to look at the picture and smiled. "He's quite charming... for a human."
Before Selena could reply, a man entered the room.
"Who's charming?" he asked. It was Klein, who had come to hurry them along, but hearing such words made him very displeased.
Before the two women could respond, an unexpected voice from the window caught everyone by surprise.
"If I'm not mistaken, I believe the lovely lady is talking about me." Erik had somehow bypassed the vampire guards and sneaked into Selena's room. "Sorry for the intrusion, and thank you for the compliment."
Erik gave a slight bow to Erica, who instinctively curtsied in response.
"Who are you? Why are they looking for you?" Selena asked sharply, drawing her weapon and pointing it at him.
"I'd say it's a misunderstanding, but your friend doesn't seem interested in letting me explain." Erik spread his hands.
Selena turned to see that Klein had already summoned his men. If the intruder were alone, it wouldn't be a problem, but Klein's sharp voice could summon every Death Walker in the building.
This was exactly what Selena despised about Klein—he was a bureaucrat, not a fighter.
"Answer my question, human," Selena pressed, ignoring the noise caused by Klein's orders.
"This is a long story, but I can tell you simply. They're looking for the human descendants of the vampire-werewolf progenitor, the immortal Alexander Covinas, to use his bloodline to transform the werewolves into a new species of mixed blood, making them even stronger. The gentleman next to you knows more about this than I do."
Selena was shocked, but before she could speak, she heard Klein shout.
"I don't know what you're talking about. Death Walkers, eliminate the intruder!" Klein immediately ordered.
The Death Walkers rushed into the room, opening fire on Erik. Many of Klein's men were involved in his betrayal of their kind, and now, to cover their tracks, they didn't care if the downstairs guests were disturbed. They only wanted to eliminate Erik.
Gunfire erupted, bullets flying, but they posed no threat to Erik. With his control, the metal projectiles floated in front of him. At his command, they reversed course and flew back at the attackers.
In this world, vampires didn't possess many extraordinary abilities. They were more like special forces among ordinary humans, relying on superior physical abilities and firearms in combat. Erik's methods were unlike anything they had seen before, and for a moment, the room fell into silence. Even the fallen didn't groan in pain. Hearing the gunshots, the vampires downstairs rushed to help, but when they saw the situation, they dared not intervene, hesitating outside.
Selena hadn't fired, so she wasn't injured during the counterattack, but she was still shaken. She had just watched as bullets seemed to be caught by an invisible hand, retreating and hitting the attackers, heavily injuring them. If it weren't for the vampires' self-healing abilities, the room would have been filled with corpses.
Erik walked past her, moving closer to Klein, and she realized she had no chance of defeating him.
Klein retreated quickly. He was used to holding a pen, not a weapon. Though he had a gun, he lacked the courage to attack. As Erik advanced, Klein kept backing away, eventually stopping when his back hit the door.
"Let me introduce myself. I'm a traveler between worlds. To help my people survive better, I need to bring back some 'specialties' from each world I visit. In this world, you and the werewolves are the 'specialties' I intend to take." Erik said, unconcerned by the vampires surrounding him.
"We are not your property! No one here will go with you!" Selena retorted coldly.
"Not even if your elder Emilia dies soon and the werewolves turn this place into a wasteland?" Erik raised Selena's chin and asked, "Don't show off your pride in front of me. Not every man will seek to please you. If I wanted to, I could make you kneel before me, but I'm not interested. You're just a pitiful creature who considers the murderer of your family as your father."
Ignoring the stunned Selena, Erik turned to Klein.
"And you, you're a dog. Not skilled at defending your home, and you have no awareness of your position as a dog. You think sitting in a chair and putting on a napkin makes you the master? But now, I need a dog with ambition. I plan to take you and your cousin with me to another world where you can thrive."
