Chapter 59: Chapter 58: Peter’s Backup Plan
Peter had gone to great lengths, even sacrificing his own interests, not to see the Avengers fight as fragmented factions.
From the original storyline, it was clear that a divided Avengers team was nothing more than a disaster.
Captain America's group lost Vision and the Mind Stone, while Iron Man and Doctor Strange failed to protect the Time Stone. The result was utter defeat.
Noticing Captain America's face darken suddenly, Peter guessed what might have happened.
Either Captain America was too proud to contact Stark, or Stark refused to believe him.
But that wasn't Peter's concern.
His responsibility was to gather everyone together as much as possible.
Still, he wasn't going to humble himself for anyone.
Peter spoke firmly: "Forgive me for being blunt, but unless we unite all our forces, we stand no chance of winning. Otherwise, we might as well surrender now."
"Let me tell you how this battle originally ended," Peter said, coldly surveying their expressions before continuing.
"First of all, Vision, you were killed by Thanos, who ripped the Mind Stone from your forehead with his own hands!" Peter's gaze landed squarely on Vision.
This was a death that couldn't be undone.
Even though the TV series later introduced White Vision, the Ship of Theseus paradox raised doubts about whether that version was truly Vision.
Vision's complexion made it hard to discern his emotions, but Wanda, standing beside him, turned pale.
The Mind Stone was essential to Vision's existence—its removal would mean his death.
Peter continued, listing names one by one:
"Winter Soldier, Falcon, Wanda, Doctor Strange, Black Panther, Spider-Man, Maria Hill, Nick Fury, Dr. Pym, the original Wasp, the second-generation Wasp, Star-Lord, Drax, Groot, Mantis…"
With every name Peter uttered, Captain America and the others grew visibly paler.
Even Ant-Man and the second-generation Wasp, who were watching from a distance, turned ashen.
This was a death list.
And among those present, aside from Peter himself, Captain America, Ghost, and Ant-Man, everyone else's name was on it.
Some of the names struck close to home.
The Winter Soldier was Captain America's closest friend, a bond forged over decades.
Black Panther had been a secret supporter of the Underground Avengers, forging a deep connection with them.
Nick Fury and Maria Hill, as the former Director and Deputy Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., also shared close ties with the group.
"We're heading to the Avengers Compound. We leave immediately!" Captain America cut Peter off, fearing his own heart couldn't take hearing another name.
The others had no objections.
However, when Ant-Man and the second-generation Wasp prepared to join them, Peter stopped them.
They would be part of his backup plan.
This time, Peter insisted that the second-generation Wasp, Ant-Man, the original Wasp, and Dr. Pym all enter the Quantum Realm together.
This was because, in the original Avengers: Endgame, the scarcity of Pym Particles severely limited their margin for error.
With Dr. Pym present, such a critical shortage was unlikely to happen again.
As for how they would return?
That part was simple.
All they needed was an automated mechanism—a timer set to release the team from the Quantum Realm at the right moment.
To avoid the risk of them returning too early, coinciding with the Snap, Peter suggested setting the timer for at least two days.
Based on various factors, the timeline of Avengers: Infinity War spanned roughly two days.
But Peter recommended extending the duration to a month.
With his involvement, Earth's forces would likely be more consolidated, and the battle might stretch longer. Even so, a month would be more than enough time to resolve everything.
If they won, great. If they lost, Ant-Man and the others could act as the "reset button" to try again.
Ant-Man, understanding the gravity of his responsibility, dropped his usual playful demeanor and solemnly agreed alongside the second-generation Wasp.
Peter finally felt a small sense of relief.
With this contingency plan in place, even in the worst-case scenario, there was still a chance to reset the timeline.
However, he didn't share this plan with Captain America and the others.
The idea of burning all bridges often brings out the strongest fighting spirit.
Besides, as an outsider lending a hand, Peter figured he had the right to approach things with a lighter mindset.
Peter then turned to Ghost.
Before he could speak, Ghost interrupted, "Wherever you go, I'll follow."
Peter was pleased by her loyalty but tried to dissuade her: "We're heading into a galactic war—bullets and explosions everywhere—"
Ghost gave him a strange look. "I used to be an operative for S.H.I.E.L.D., trained for this. I'm not some fragile, helpless girl. Since I've chosen to follow you, I'll see it through."
"Alright then, let's go," Peter said, giving up on persuading her. He led Ghost outside.
From Ant-Man's home in San Francisco to the Avengers headquarters in New York, the distance was nearly 5,000 kilometers.
Fortunately, Captain America's team had arrived in a Quinjet.
Designed by Wakanda's engineering team, the Quinjet was a turbojet aircraft with vertical takeoff and landing capabilities. While its speed wasn't extraordinary, its ability to take off and land without a runway made it incredibly versatile.
Still, as a supersonic jet, it could reach speeds of up to Mach 2.1, or 2,573 kilometers per hour. Traveling to New York would take less than two hours.
Aboard the Quinjet
Black Widow piloted the aircraft with Falcon assisting from the co-pilot seat.
Captain America approached Peter once more, taking a seat beside him. "Can you tell me how you ended up in our world?"
"Sure," Peter replied, recognizing this as another attempt to probe his identity.
Since they hadn't resorted to using Wanda to control him, Peter was willing to share parts of his story to earn their trust and lay a foundation for cooperation.
However, he didn't intend to reveal the truth about the "real world."
Instead, he presented himself as someone from the Ultimate Universe. He explained that after Spider-Man from his world sacrificed himself, Peter took up the mantle.
Kingpin's particle collider accidentally opened a dimensional portal, summoning Gwen-Spider, Shadow Spider, and several other Spider-Men from parallel universes.
When the collider was being shut down, Peter claimed he was caught in the particle stream, which activated his abilities and caused him to fall into the Quantum Realm. There, he was saved by the Quantum Tunnel created by Dr. Pym and his team, which brought him to this world.
As for his knowledge of Thanos and the events of the Infinity War, Peter attributed it to visions he experienced while transitioning through the Quantum Realm.
This mix of truth and fabricated details painted a convincing picture: a hero's origin, his unique abilities, the reason for his perceived "weakness," and his knowledge of future events.
It was a story both believable and inspiring.
