Master of the game

Chapter 2: My new family

Still enjoying the feeling of the ball on his feet, Leon was interrupted by a light knock on his door. The knock on the door was gentle, followed by a familiar yet new voice.

"Leon, sweetie, are you okay? I heard some noise coming from your room." Leon's eyes darted towards the door, and he felt a mix of emotions. He didn't know what to expect, but he knew he had to play along. He had to pretend to be this new person, Leon Blake.

"Yeah, Mom, I'm fine," Leon replied, trying to sound as natural as possible. "Just...just getting some exercise." He continued to dribble the ball, trying to appear nonchalant.

The door creaked open, and a woman with a warm smile peeked inside. "Okay, sweetie, but be careful. You know you've been through a tough time lately." She looked at him with concern, and Leon felt a pang of guilt.

"Yeah, Mom, I will," Leon replied, trying to reassure her. "Don't worry about me." He smiled, hoping it looked genuine.

His mother nodded and smiled back. "I love you, Leon. I'll be downstairs if you need anything." She closed the door, and Leon let out a sigh of relief.

He looked at himself in the mirror again, this time with a more determined gaze. He would make the most of this second chance. He would learn about this new life, about Leon Blake, and about the people around him. And he would do it all with a newfound appreciation for life and a burning desire to succeed. With renewed determination, Leon continued to dribble the ball, feeling more confident with each passing moment. He was ready to take on this new chapter of his life, and he was ready to make the most of it.

A few moments ts later he headed downstairs and walked into the kitchen, he was greeted by the warm atmosphere of his family playing Monopoly together. His father, a tall and imposing figure with a rugged charm, sat at the head of the table. He had black hair that was flecked with hints of gray, and a large beard that framed his face. His bright blue eyes sparkled with amusement as he rolled the dice, his deep laughter filling the room.

Across from him, Leon's mother sat with a gentle smile on her face. She was a beautiful black African woman with a radiant complexion and a hint of African beads around her neck, a subtle nod to her Setswana heritage. Her dark eyes shone with warmth as she watched her family play, her hair styled in a neat afro that framed her face.

To the side of the table, Leon's little sister sat with a look of intense concentration on her face. She was a miniature version of Leon, with a mix of their parents' features that made her look like a unique blend of both. Her light brown skin glowed with a warm tone, and her short dreadlocks were tied up in a ponytail. Her bright eyes sparkled with excitement as she counted her money, her small hands moving quickly as she calculated her next move.

As Leon watched his family, he felt a sense of belonging that he couldn't quite explain. He didn't know much about this new life, but he knew that he was grateful to be a part of this loving family. He cleared his throat to announce his presence, and his family turned to him with warm smiles.

"Hey, Leon!" his mother said, beckoning him over. "Come join us! We're just getting started." Leon's father nodded in agreement, his eyes twinkling with amusement. "Yeah, kiddo, come on in. We're just about to start the game."

Leon's sister looked up at him with a grin, her eyes sparkling with excitement. "Yeah, Buti (Big brother in setswana) Leon, come play with us! I'm going to win!" Leon smiled, feeling a sense of joy that he hadn't felt in a long time. He walked over to the table, feeling like he was finally starting to find his place in this new life.

A hour later

Thapelo, Leon's little sister, gazed up at him with a curious expression. "Leon, you look different today," she said, her voice filled with wonder. "Your eyes are full of life again." Mmathepelo, their mother, nodded in agreement, a gentle smile on her face. "Now that Thapelo speaks of it, I did find you playing with the ball earlier in your room when I went to check."

(Thepelo is a South African name meaning Prayer. Mmathapelo is a Name meaning Mother of Prayer, usually when the mothers name starts with a "Mma" it is custome for their child to inherit the other part of the name like with Leon's mother and Sister."

Jake, Leon's father, looked shocked, his eyes widening in surprise. "Leon hasn't touched a ball since..." He hesitated, his voice trailing off.

Mmathapelo hearing where he was heading quickly tried to change the subject, remembering that talking about the injury was a trigger for Leon's anger and frustration.

"Let's not focus on the past, Jake. Let's just enjoy the game and spend quality time together as a family."

But Leon took a deep and heavy sigh, his eyes locked on his family. He seemed to be gathering his courage, preparing to share something important. "I have something to tell you all," he said, his voice barely above a whisper. He sighed again, the sound heavy with emotion.

Finally, he spoke the words that had been on his mind. "I think I'm ready to play soccer again. I want to give it another try."

The room fell silent, with his family exchanging surprised glances. Thapelo's eyes lit up with excitement, while Jake and Mmathepelo looked at each other, unsure of how to react. Jake's expression was a mix of surprise and concern as he looked at Leon. "Are you sure, son?" he asked, his voice hesitant. "You've been through a lot after that injury. Are you sure you're ready to get back into soccer?" He leaned forward, his eyes locked on Leon's face, searching for any sign of uncertainty.

Mmathapelo placed a gentle hand on Jake's arm, as if cautioning him to be careful with his words. Thapelo, on the other hand, looked at Leon with wide eyes, her face filled with excitement and anticipation.

Leon took another deep breath, his eyes meeting his father's. "Yes." His Dad looked at him with a mixture of uncertainty and hope. "I've been thinking about it a lot, Dad. I feel like...I don't know, like I'm stuck in a rut. I need to get back to doing what I love."

Jake's expression softened slightly, but his voice still held a note of caution. "Okay, son. Let's talk about this. What makes you think you're ready to play soccer again?" He leaned back in his chair, his eyes never leaving Leon's face, waiting for his response.

"Meet me outside in 10 minutes," Leon said, a determined glint in his eye. "I'll show you." With that, he turned and headed upstairs to his room.

Exactly 10 minutes later, Leon emerged from the house, dressed in a short and cleats, the ball from his room clutched in his hand. His family watched in surprise as he walked out into the backyard, his eyes shining with excitement.

Without a word, Leon began to dribble the ball, his feet moving swiftly and precisely as he juggled the ball with ease. He showed off his skills, performing intricate footwork and ball control maneuvers that left his family in awe.

Mmathepelo gasped in amazement as Leon executed a perfect step-over, his feet moving so quickly that the ball seemed to be glued to his feet. Jake's eyes widened in surprise, a proud smile spreading across his face. Thapelo clapped her hands in delight, cheering Leon on as he continued to show off his skills.

As Leon danced with the ball, his family watched in stunned silence, mesmerized by his talent and technique. It was clear that Leon had a natural gift for soccer, and his passion for the game was evident in every move he made.

When Leon finally stopped playing and walked back to his family, grinning from ear to ear, they were all beaming with pride. "I think I'm ready," Leon said, his chest heaving with exertion. "I think I can do this."

Jake's eyes narrowed slightly as he looked at Leon, a hint of surprise still etched on his face. "I don't remember you being this good, son," he said, his voice tinged with a mix of amazement and skepticism.

Mmathapelo quickly pinched Jake's arm, shooting him a warning glance. "Jake, don't say things like that," she whispered, her voice low and cautionary.

Thapelo, on the other hand, was completely enthralled by her brother's talent. She stared at Leon with wide eyes, her face alight with excitement. "Wow, Leon, you're amazing!" she exclaimed, clapping her hands together in delight. "I've never seen anyone play soccer like that before!"

Leon grinned, feeling a surge of pride and confidence. He knew he still had a lot to prove, but he was determined to show his family - and himself - that he was capable of overcoming his doubts and fears.

"I told you I'm ready," Leon said, his chest still heaving with exertion. "I want to start training again and see where it takes me."

Jake looked at Leon, his expression softening slightly. "Okay, son," he said finally. "Let's support you on this journey. But promise me one thing - you have to be careful and listen to your body. We don't want you getting hurt again."

Leon nodded eagerly, feeling a sense of relief and gratitude towards his family. He knew he had their support, and that gave him the courage to take the next step towards pursuing his passion for soccer.
