Chapter 43: Disdain
Naro did not know what to think.
As they entered the building, he was taken aback by how spacious it was. The interior was a vast open area that branched off into several different halls. The high ceilings gave the place an airy quality, allowing the chatter of voices to echo softly.
In the open area, small clusters of people were gathered, their expressions animated as they engaged in rapid conversation. From the lively energy, they appeared to have just finished their work.
At the far end of the open area, his gaze was drawn to an attractive woman who sat poised behind a polished wooden desk. She exuded an air of confidence, occasionally glancing up to engage with those who approached her.
The sounds of conversation filled the air. Naro still did not understand the language being used, but he did not get the impression that they were villains. Certain, he would not guess that any of them would go out of their way to harm a baby.
He cautiously looked from one face to another.
It just seemed like a normal workplace.
His fears eased slightly, as he continued to squirm in his cradle. Was there a chance that he was overreacting?
"It is against the Mo interest, he said those words to her plainly."
"You have to look past the words. The reason for the rejection is because they are afraid of Goldmoon Hall. The first girl came from a military household, you know."
"Goldmoon is one matter, but the military is the real beast behind them. Even though the army is not around, who would dare stick their hand in for fear of having it bitten off."
"That's right, it is not Goldmoon Hall, but the Dynasty itself that intimidates the families. Any trouble that is stirred up could inevitably draw scrutiny. It is important to be on the right side of such issues."
"Another case of bullying the weak and flattering the strong."
Mo Seris sneered. He knew exactly what was being talked about. It was an unsavory event involving a different assistant steward from the Sixth House.
Even though it was an assistant steward that he did not think much of, it was still an assistant steward they were talking about. All unrelated people should look in the mirror before they discuss the matters of a superior.
And these servants did not seem like they were anything good. All they did was rumormonger when they weren't being looked after.
As Mo Seris drew closer to the group, they grew quiet.
"Master Seris." "Master." "Master Seris."
They all addressed him respectfully, before looking to the side.
He glanced over them once without saying anything. They were the lowest people in the Sixth House, the menial workers. At that moment, all he could think was that their station was perhaps even a bit too high.
He disdained to speak in their presence, even if it was just to chastise them.
Instead, he continued to the front.
The assistant who was sitting at the desk was someone who he had never seen in the Sixth House. This was not surprising, as the assistants were changed frequently, always moving through the Mo Estate until someone took a liking to them, in one way or another.
The assistant had dark eyes and an unblemished, ovular face. Her long hair hung straight down behind her.
To Mo Seris's eyes, she was average in appearance. Perhaps it would have been a different matter if she possessed a quality that made her stand out, for instance if she had stepped on the path of cultivation or if she was high-born, but otherwise he had no interest in such women.
The assistant saw the baby in his hands, and guessed the reason he had approached her.
"It is Master Yiren in the storeroom, Master Seris," she said, her voice gentle as a breeze. She flashed a smile. Before taking a position in the Sixth House, she memorized all important locations, as well as the names and faces of the higher-ups.
"I saw him when I left," Mo Seris said bluntly.
At the same time, he amended his assessment of her. She was not merely average in appearance, but also dull-witted.
