Chapter 31: Chapter 31: No Choice...
"Kate, if you had to infiltrate an enemy base, how would you do it without being spotted?"
"I know! I'd wait until they weren't paying attention and crawl underneath a truck to get in!"
"Nope. You'd end up battered and bloody halfway there from all the bumps in the road. Don't believe what you see in the movies—the director who came up with that must be an idiot!"
"But…but I heard Captain America once got into a HYDRA base that way and saved all the Allied soldiers? Are you saying Captain America was lying?"
"…"
Disguised as "Adeline," Barbara could only rub her forehead in exasperation.
Come on, that was ages ago, and you're quoting Captain America of all people? He's basically been an ice cube for how many years now!
"I've got it! If I kill everyone inside, there'll be nobody left to notice me!"
A sudden idea lit up Kate's eyes.
Barbara was alarmed. "Where'd that insane thought come from? Kate, how did you think of that?"
Kate lifted her chin proudly. "Aaron told me that's the highest level of infiltration!"
Barbara rolled her eyes hard. Highest level, my foot. If you can slaughter everyone, why bother sneaking in at all? Just flatten the entire base with one slap!
"I'm definitely going to have a chat with Aaron. Good grief, what's he been teaching you? We're not Terminators."
"Oh good, we do need to have a nice talk!"
A booming voice came from above. Barbara looked up in astonishment, seeing Aaron and Felicia descend from the sky.
"Aaron!!"
Kate squealed with excitement, immediately abandoning Barbara and rushing to Aaron's side. Seeing Felicia in Aaron's arms, she pouted—she was here first, after all!
"When I grow up, I'm gonna be your secretary too!"
Kate announced, clearly envious. She couldn't wait to be an adult.
Barbara stared at Aaron for a moment before marching over, looking dead serious. "Mr. Aaron, I realize you're Oscorp's chairman, but I have to ask you not to fill Kate's head with nonsense."
"She's just a normal human. What she needs is the strength to protect herself, not weird, far-fetched ideas only a superhero could pull off!"
But before Aaron could respond, Kate jumped in: "I am going to be a superhero someday! I think Aaron's right—if you kill all your enemies, there won't be any left to fight you."
Barbara's mouth twitched. I spent so much time building rapport, and the second Aaron shows up, you switch sides. I'm your teacher here—helping you with homework, teaching you combat and espionage knowledge you can't buy outside except at the cost of blood or even death… And yet…grr, so frustrating!
Aaron chuckled, ruffling Kate's hair. "Kate, can you give me and Miss Adeline some privacy for a moment? I have a few things to discuss with her. Felicia, why don't you take Kate out for some fun?"
Felicia walked over. Kate glanced at Aaron and then at "Adeline," somewhat puzzled, but she was obedient—at least to Aaron. Letting Felicia lead her away, Kate left the room.
Now alone, Barbara felt unaccountably tense. She tried to steady herself. "Mr. Aaron…what exactly do you need to discuss privately? Maybe we can exchange contact info and talk later?"
"No need, Miss Adeline—or should I say…Barbara?"
Barbara's face changed instantly. Her first thought: Someone inside S.H.I.E.L.D. must have sold me out!
She feigned ignorance. "Mr. Aaron, what are you talking about? Who's Barbara? That name does sound pretty decent, though."
Aaron's eyes glinted faintly. "Barbara Morse, callsign Mockingbird, age 24, height 178 centimeters, weight 61 kilograms, bust-waist-hip measurement of XXX—quite an impressive figure, you know."
"You graduated from Georgia Tech two years ago with top grades, especially excelling in biology. We do have a bit in common."
"In high school, you won a gymnastics championship. Because you stood out, you were headhunted by S.H.I.E.L.D., training part-time while finishing your studies."
"And right now, in your inner suit pocket, you're carrying several sets of IDs for the Strategic Homeland Intervention Enforcement and Logistics Division, the FBI, the CIA—and the IRS too?! So bold—aren't you worried the other agencies might unite to blacklist you?"
"There's a baton tucked in your back pocket. Heard you like staves—maybe you'll show me your moves sometime. And that tiny Lady Glock you've got has no safety on. Aren't you afraid of an accidental misfire? What a dangerous woman."
He rattled off her secrets like it was nothing, leaving Barbara too stunned to keep her composure. A dozen possibilities flashed through her mind, and she ended up suspecting Nick Fury had betrayed her. He'd claimed her personal file existed solely in his own possession. Yet Aaron was reciting every detail, so how could she not think Fury was the mole?
Barbara's hand slid behind her, stepping backward warily. "Who on earth are you, and how do you know all this?"
"If I told you Nick Fury spilled the beans, would you believe me?" Aaron replied seriously.
Sure enough, Barbara thought. This might be the last time I ever call him "Director." Next time we meet, it'll be in a prison cell…
"I should remind you," Aaron continued calmly, "if I know all that about you, why do you think I'd be scared of your little gun? Maybe you've never seen real 'big guns' in action."
He strode forward, completely untroubled by Barbara's defensive posture.
"Stop there! What do you think you're doing?" She snapped.
"What do you think?" Aaron smirked. "Fury already sold you to me. So I can do whatever I want!"
Barbara's face went pale. Could it be…that kind of scenario? He's hinting I was literally "sold off"?
She didn't want to believe it but, if it meant getting closer to Aaron…some things might be worth it. And for some reason, she felt her body heating up, her heart racing. Just being near him stirred something inside. She hadn't drunk anything; how was this happening? Is…is this turning into some R-rated plot?!
As her gaze lingered on him, she found Aaron unexpectedly appealing. She liked that scent—like waves of pheromones driving her wild.
Her initial hesitance melted away. Whatever. Let's just do it!
Noticing her dazed expression, Aaron was surprised. It must be because I've smelted so many creatures; not only can I sense pheromones, I can release them too—like controlling ants, or sending ultrasonic signals to bats. Even sexual hormones can be released this way? This is the first time I've tried it, but the results are…shockingly good. Wait, am I in some erotic version of Marvel?
He recalled the villain Purple Man, who could control others by releasing pheromones, using it to do vile things to women with powers, like Jessica Jones. So, he too had the potential to be "Purple Man," apparently.
But now Barbara had stepped closer, eyes hazy. Aaron was momentarily torn: he'd come to warn her and plan for infiltration of S.H.I.E.L.D., yet one small experiment with his power had sent events spinning in this direction. So what now—act like a beast, or worse than a beast? No choice, huh…
