Chapter 7: Chapter 7: Norman Osborn
"Wow! That was amazing!"
"I saw my mom's company building, and I even waved to her!"
"That's my school over there. They'll be so jealous when they see this!"
"Faster! This is awesome—I'm flying!"
Carrying Kate as they swung through the heart of New York, Aaron realized that since Spider-Man wasn't around yet, they might be the first to achieve the feat of "swinging all over New York."
When Aaron finally brought Kate back down, landing on a rooftop, Kate was still on an adrenaline high.
"That was incredible!"
"I've never experienced anything like it—flying freely, more free than any bird!"
"It would've been even better if you hadn't tied me up with that stuff!"
Kate's cheeks were flushed with excitement as she loudly rattled off all her feelings. She'd never exactly been a quiet, obedient girl; this adventure had tapped into her deep desire for thrills. Now she was pestering Aaron to go again.
Aaron noticed that her legs were still shaking, even though she didn't realize it. Pointing to the sun, which was almost setting in the west, he shook his head helplessly.
"I'm sure your parents have told you that kids shouldn't stay out too late—especially little girls."
"Come on, let's get you home."
Amid Kate's surprised yelp, Aaron scooped her up and took off again, swinging swiftly across the New York skyline. Even though it was his first time web-swinging, his physical coordination—rivaling Spider-Man's—let him handle this form of travel effortlessly.
After all, when people first see Spider-Man, who doesn't dream of freely "flying" among city skyscrapers?
Not just Kate—Aaron himself found it exhilarating.
He dropped Kate off at her house. Waving at Eleanor and the others waiting outside, Aaron lightly pushed off the ground and shot into the sky. As he fell, he fired off a long strand of web that latched onto a tall building, swinging away again.
"Hey! I'll come find you tomorrow—I still want to play some more!" Kate called after him. Without turning back, Aaron just gave an "okay" gesture and soon vanished among the high-rises.
"K-Kate!!"
Finally snapping out of it, Eleanor hurried over to her daughter.
"Mom, today was incredible! Aaron is practically an all-powerful superhero—he can do anything!"
Kate chattered excitedly. Seeing how thrilled she was, Eleanor just watched her fondly and listened to her stories. Yet the more she heard, the more envious she became. She wished she could trade places with Kate, feeling ever more shocked by Aaron's display of power.
That handsome man from the East was clearly far more mysterious and powerful than she'd imagined.
At that thought, Eleanor leaned down and said softly, "Kate, whatever happened today, make sure you don't tell anyone else. It might cause trouble for Mr. Aaron. Understand?"
Kate lifted her chin and answered earnestly, "Don't worry. Superheroes shouldn't reveal their identities, right? I know that! I won't tell anyone but you!"
Eleanor nodded. Kate might be energetic and curious about everything, but if she said she'd keep a secret, she would keep it.
"Then let's pinky-swear, all right? Not even your dad can know. Promise?"
"Mm-hmm!!"
Meanwhile, in Manhattan, a young teen was riding a school bus and gazing boredly out the window.
"Oh my gosh—someone's flying out there!"
"Where? Holy cow, there really is someone flying!"
"Maybe he's a superhero? That's so cool!"
"… …"
Hearing the excited chatter, Peter Parker followed everyone's gaze and looked out the window. He saw a figure moving between buildings like a bird, soaring from one skyscraper to another with incredible agility, disappearing in seconds.
"That's amazing… If only I had powers like that!" Peter Parker thought, envy burning inside him. Listening to his classmates' animated discussions, he realized how they'd admire him if he were that strong. A superhero—that would be so awesome!
But a moment later, he remembered his own reality as a loser. Peter's face fell into a wry smile. Something like that would never happen to him…would it?
Aaron, unaware that he'd become an object of envy for the real future Spider-Man, arrived at the top of what had once been New York's tallest building: the Empire State Building. Gazing down on the city from such a height, his heart welled up with emotion. Less than a full day had passed since he'd arrived in the Marvel universe, and he already possessed extraordinary power.
So what about the future?
Could he gradually climb to the pinnacle, becoming the ultimate omnipotent being?
Shaking his head, Aaron decided not to dwell on such distant ambitions just yet.
"I'm still too weak right now. Lifting a few dozen tons is no big deal. In the MCU, that's basically the level of a minor side character. Looking at the entire infinite universe, I'm barely stronger than an ant. I have to become even stronger!"
He took a deep breath, letting his eyes drift until they settled on a familiar yet distant logo.
"That's…Oscorp Industries!"
He stared at the Oscorp tower for a long while. His eyes flickered, and a small smile curled at his lips. Where no one could see, his brain released an unknown signal. Seamlessly, he logged into the nearest network and roamed rapidly through cyberspace, making his way into Oscorp's security systems.
In just a few seconds of mental processing, he found his target:
The Green Goblin—Norman Osborn!
Right now, in Oscorp Tower's research building…
Inside a lab brimming with high-tech equipment, Norman Osborn stood behind bulletproof glass, dressed in a white coat and wearing glasses. He was writing data onto a report while observing a white lab mouse—bigger and more aggressive than usual—with unblinking intensity. There was a flicker of excitement on his face.
But the next moment, boom, the enhanced mouse exploded into dust.
Norman's expression instantly darkened. Forcing back his anger, he jotted down a few more lines:
"After reducing the vapor-inhalation dosage by seventy percent, Subject #759 showed an eightfold boost in physical ability, lasting one minute—an improvement. Side effects are still violent tendencies and aggression…"
"Recommend continuing future experiments starting with the same dosage…"
Once he'd finished writing the dense report, Norman placed the folder in a safe. He dropped into a chair, rubbing his temples in exhaustion.
"Damn it, why is this still failing? Where is the flaw? Do I need to roll everything back to the formula stage? No, I can't do that! That must not be the problem. Maybe the rats are just too weak?"
Norman muttered to himself for a while, glanced at his Rolex, and sighed. "Harry must be out of school by now… All right, that's it for today."
He stood, putting his lab coat into a sterilization chamber. Just as he turned to leave, the lab door suddenly slid open.
"Who is it? Didn't I say no one was to disturb me during my experiments?"
Frowning, Norman prepared to rebuke whoever it was, but when he saw the unfamiliar man of asian descent standing there, he froze.
Aaron strolled in casually, his gaze sweeping around to take in every detail of the lab—positions of equipment, labels on test tubes, strange codes and symbols.
"And who are you?" Norman Osborn searched his memory but couldn't place Aaron's face. Being the head of a big company, he certainly didn't know every single low-level employee.
"It doesn't matter who I am," Aaron replied calmly. "What matters is—do you want to live?"
