Chapter 8: "I'm the snowman god"
It felt like ages ago since he'd have a conversation with someone his same age.
This change of pace that disrupted his daily routine felt liberating.
It felt as if he'd broken free from the heavy restraints that kept him skeptical of everyone around him.
"My name is simply Yuuji, nice to meet you Midoriya."
Shinji felt bad lying about his name, but it was necessary to keep himself safe.
"Um, n-nice to meet you." Silence, the boy seemed to struggle with his speech.
"So, you wanna talk about what happened?" Shinji asked once again.
Midoriya seemed to think for a few seconds before answering him.
"I want to be a hero, but everyone else around me thinks I can't do it."
Shinji could see the pain it was causing him to not be accepted by the people around him.
These were the types of people he was fighting for, the ones shunned by society and told they're less only because they were different.
Seeing the boy in front of him being so sad, it made him believe that the sacrifices he was doing and will continue to do would be for the better.
"Why can't you be a hero?" Shinji simply asked.
Midoriya hesitated to answer.
"I-if I tell you, will you promise not to laugh?"
"Alright, I promise that I'll not laugh."
"I'm q-quirkless."
Midoriya shut his eyes and faced the ground, expecting some sort of negative reaction from the boy sitting beside him.
After not listening to any type of feedback, he looked up and saw Shinji looking at him with confusion.
"That's all? Just because you don't have a quirk?"
Midoriya was a bit taken aback.
"W-what do you mean by that? Top heroes all have a quirk.
"Lots of pro heroes I've seen don't have a very strong quirk, or maybe their quirk is just one extra limb. If you truly want to be a hero then don't focus on what you can't do, and focus on what you can do."
Shinji's words came out of his heart, he truly believed that being a quirkless hero was possible.
Midoriya noticed the sincerity coming out of his mouth and was grateful, but also a little skeptical.
"B-but, I don't have the strength, speed, or skills to be a hero."
"Why are you talking about yourself like that? The worst thing you can do is not try. Think about this; if you're not strong and fast enough then you can work out, if you don't have the skill set, then you can take fighting classes. There's no excuse, just start."
Midoriya's eyes opened like they never had before.
He sat quietly for a few seconds, thinking about what he'd heard.
Looking back at Shinji, he could only look at him with gratitude.
Midoriya stood from where he was sitting and bowed in his direction. "T-thank you very much!"
Shinji stood from where he was and told the boy that he's welcome.
Midoriya returned to standing normally and asked, "D-do you mind if I ask you what your age is? I'm twelve years old."
"I'm also twelve years old. Do you go here often?"
"Uh, yes! If it's not much trouble, d-do you mind being friends?"
"I don't mind it, but I don't have a phone or something to talk to when we're away."
Shinji became a little uncomfortable having thought of his past.
When he looked at Midoriya, he saw his old friend in him.
It made him want to protect, and support him on everything.
"Umm, then how about we meet on certain days like Monday or Wednesday afterschool?"
"That's fine with me."
Looking at the setting sun in the background, Shinji decided that it was enough for the day.
He'd enjoyed this warm moment for way too long and it was now time to work.
The events that took place yesterday kept tormenting him, but this wasn't going to stop him from achieving his goals.
With his newfound determination to keep going with his work, he was basically unstoppable.
Shinji said goodbye to Midoriya and headed out to fulfill his purpose.
On his way to seek crime, he thought about the freckled boy.
Midoriya was an individual that looked just like everyone else.
Except his lack of quirk caused him to be judged by others.
The complete opposite of what this boy went through had happened to him.
Because of his quirk, he was judged by his family and lived miserably.
They were quite similar but different at the same time.
Having been distracted, he didn't realize when he finally arrived at his usual location for spotting crime.
Shinji didn't have to look very hard as he saw one happening right below him.
He kept repeating to himself that it would be fine, that he wouldn't let yesterday's event happen again.
Finally having calmed himself down, he sprang into action.
—----
A year had passed, and Shinji kept hanging out with Midoriya.
They had become best friends and always told everything to each other.
Shinji was feeling guilty about not telling him about his real self.
Midoriya only knew Yuuji, but not his real identity as Shinji.
Maybe one day he would tell him about what happened to him, just not right now.
It wasn't the time to reveal himself.
Hearing about Midoriya's wish to be a hero, Shinji had set a challenge for both of them to become as strong as possible in a year.
They kept supporting each other and pushing themselves towards new heights.
Shinji had bought clothes from the money he'd stolen from criminals.
He sometimes took daily showers from going house to house asking if their restrooms were available.
His skills improved and he hadn't failed to save anyone this year, quite an accomplishment.
Midoriya went from a skeleton, to looking like a pro calisthenics athlete.
His speaking skills with strangers was still a work in progress though.
Combat training every time they met had become the norm, and now, they were in a heated battle.
Shinji was using purely his strength and technique, he hated to admit it, but Midoriya was better than him.
Without his quirk, he wasn't the same, just a normal person.
Midoriya had been studying how pro heroes fought and implemented their techniques into his fighting style.
Compared to him who was used to clawing at everything, he was at an obvious disadvantage.
This however, only fueled him to become stronger and not be left behind by his friend who was improving at an incredibly fast rate.
Having lost the battle, he took a moment to breathe.
"Man, Midoriya, you've become really good at this."
Shinji was out of breath, his now muscular body didn't help him at all in the fight with his friend.
"I-I could say the same thing about you, Yuuji," Midoriya answered. He couldn't stand up from exhaustion.
"Let's go get something to eat." Shinji slowly stood and helped his friend up.
They both went to a hotdog stand.
After buying what they needed, they sat down on a nearby bench to enjoy their food.
Eating after training might just be the best feeling in the world right now.
As they were eating in peace, they both saw how a villain started destroying everything around them.
Midoriya quickly stood and looked at the villain with horror.
It was a man calling himself the snowman god who'd come to bring punishment to sinners.
Various snowmen with sharp branches were destroying property and attacking civilians.
Citizens ran away and those who were left at the scene were Shinji and Midoriya.
"Y-Yuuji, we have to run, let the heroes handle it."
Shuji looked besides him at Midoriya with a serious face.
"Didn't you say that you wanted to be a hero? I think this is the perfect opportunity to show that you can be one."
Midoriya opened his mouth to object, but he closed it soon after.
Looking at Shinji with new found determination, he said, "You're right, let's defeat this villain."
With that being said, they both went ahead to stop the villain, unaware of what would happen in the process.
