Chapter 11: What's Special?
The Very Next Day
I glanced at the clock, it was 7:30, I still had 30 minutes to go. I thought about the quirk All Might gave me, and to be honest, it is the best addition to my power. I can control time, to a margin, but I have no real offensive power.
Even though I could manipulate time, slowing things down or stopping them entirely, it wasn't the same as raw strength. Before, I had to rely on precision and strategy. Now, with One For All, I had power. Real, tangible power.
I flexed my fingers, feeling the faint hum of energy coursing through my veins. Even at just 20%, my body felt stronger than ever. I could punch through steel, leap over buildings, and move faster than the eye could track. I feel suffocated, about when I should reveal myself. I should not hide this... power for long, maybe when the time comes.
I shook my head, pushing away the lingering thoughts. There was no point in stressing over it now. I had time—ironically enough.
Standing up, I stretched, feeling the faint resistance of my muscles adjusting to the enhanced strength One For All provided. My body had adapted well, more than I expected, well, it is All Might's quirk.
I changed into my U.A. uniform and grabbed my school bag, making sure my notebooks were packed. Even with everything else going on, I wasn't about to slack off on my studies.
Walking into the kitchen, I was greeted by the scent of freshly made miso soup and rice. Mom was already up, humming softly as she set the table.
"Good morning, Izuku!" she said cheerfully, turning to face me with a warm smile.
"Morning, Mom," I replied, sitting down.
"What's special today?" She asked me.
"Uh, nothing. We had a battle trial yesterday, kind of a drill. They have yet to announce anything. But I did hear some rumors about USJ."
Mom paused for a moment, her chopsticks hovering just above her bowl. "USJ? What's that?"
I swallowed a bite of rice before answering. "Unforeseen Simulation Joint. It's a massive training facility designed for disaster and rescue training. I heard some of the students talking about it yesterday, but we haven't gotten any official word yet."
She nodded slowly. "That sounds... intense. Are you sure it's safe?"
I smiled reassuringly. "Of course, Mom. U.A. has some of the best security measures in the world. Plus, all the teachers will be there to supervise. It'll be fine."
"Plus, we have All Might."
Mom's expression softened slightly at the mention of All Might. "That's true… If he's there, then I guess I don't have to worry as much."
I nodded, taking another bite of rice. "Yeah. He's been really involved with our training. I think he wants to make sure we're all as prepared as possible."
She smiled gently. "He really is a symbol of peace, isn't he?"
I paused for a moment, my chopsticks hovering over my plate. All Might—the greatest hero, the man who entrusted me with his power. To the world, he was invincible. But I knew the truth. The toll his injuries had taken. How much he was pushing himself to keep up the act.
"He is," I said softly. "And I'll make sure that doesn't change."
Mom looked at me curiously, but before she could ask anything, I quickly changed the subject. "Anyway, I should get going. Don't wanna be late!"
She sighed, shaking her head. "Alright, alright. Just make sure to stay safe, Izuku."
"I will, Mom. Promise!" I grabbed my bag, slipping on my shoes before stepping outside.
Now, USJ, huh? Wonder what's gonna happen? Hopefully nothing stressful.
USJ… I had no reason to believe it would be anything other than a standard training session, but something about it made my instincts tingle. Maybe I was overthinking things. Maybe it was just nerves.
I arrived at U.A. shortly after, locking up my bike before heading inside. As I walked into the classroom, the usual energy was already in full swing.
"Yo, Midoriya!" Kirishima waved me over with his signature grin. "You ready for today? I heard we're finally doing some real hero training!"
I smiled back. "Yeah, I heard some rumors about USJ. If it's true, then today should be interesting."
"Interesting? Try awesome!" He threw an arm around my shoulder. "Man, I hope we get to do some heavy-duty rescue work. I wanna see how my quirk holds up in real situations!"
"Just don't go breaking yourself before the actual missions start," Kaminari chuckled from his desk. "That'd be pretty unmanly, huh?"
Kirishima scoffed. "Nah, that'd just mean I pushed myself to the limit!"
I laughed, shaking my head. Before I could say anything else, the classroom door slammed open.
"Move it, extras!" Bakugo barked around as he opened the door.
I glanced around the room, realizing someone was missing. Ochaco wasn't here yet.
That was unusual. She was always on time, usually even early. My mind raced with possibilities—maybe she overslept? Got caught up with something on the way?
"Hey, where's Uraraka?" I asked, looking at Kirishima.
"Huh, good question," he replied, rubbing the back of his head. "She's usually one of the first people here."
"Maybe she got lost on the way?" Kaminari suggested.
"She's not a kid, idiot," Jiro said, rolling her eyes.
"Jiro, are you friends with Ochaco?"
Jiro blinked at my question, then shrugged. "I mean, yeah, kinda. We talk sometimes."
Kirishima leaned in. "Wait, you guys hang out?"
Jiro sighed. "We're in the same class. Of course we talk. But I wouldn't say we're best friends or anything."
I nodded, still thinking. It wasn't like Ochaco to be late, and the fact that even Jiro—who usually played things cool—seemed a bit curious made it stand out even more.
Before I could dwell on it further, the classroom door slid open again.
"Sorry, sorry! I'm here!" Ochaco rushed in, 'slightly' out of breath.
She paused in the doorway, hands on her knees, trying to catch her breath. Her hair was slightly messy, and she looked like she had been sprinting.
Kirishima grinned. "Whoa, did you run all the way here?"
Ochaco stood up straight, laughing sheepishly. "Yeah… kinda! I, uh, overslept a little."
"You? Oversleep?" I asked, surprised.
"I know, right? That never happens!" she sighed, taking her seat. "I stayed up late reading about hero rescue strategies, and, well… I might've lost track of time."
As we thought of him, Aizawa sir, just walked right in, his dreadful eyes appearing more dreadful than usual.
"Alright, settle down," he muttered, rubbing his temples like he was already regretting dealing with us this early in the morning. "Today, we'll be heading to the Unforeseen Simulation Joint for rescue training. Get your hero costumes and meet at the bus. You've got ten minutes."
A murmur of excitement rippled through the class. Even though most of us had heard rumors, having it confirmed made it real.
"USJ, huh?" Kirishima grinned, cracking his knuckles. "This is gonna be sick!"
"Rescue training… huh." Bakugo scoffed, kicking back in his chair. "Tch. Sounds like a waste of time. Heroes should be fighting, not playing lifeguard."
"You're missing the point," Iida cut in, adjusting his glasses. "A hero's duty isn't just combat, but also aiding civilians in times of crisis!"
"Whatever, four-eyes," Bakugo muttered.
I ignored their bickering, my mind focused elsewhere. USJ. For some reason, a strange sense of unease curled in my stomach. I couldn't shake the feeling that something was… off.
'You should be careful, Architect.' I heard Chronos. He rarely speaks, what happened now?
My breath hitched slightly at the sudden intrusion of Chronos's voice in my mind. He rarely spoke unless it was something important.
"You should be careful, Architect."
The words echoed, heavy with meaning.
"Why? What do you know?" I asked internally, keeping my expression neutral as I stood up with the rest of the class.
There was silence at first, like he was considering whether to answer me. Then, his voice returned, steady and ancient as always.
"Time is shifting in unnatural ways. There are ripples—distortions I have not foreseen. The closer you get to this place, the stronger they become. This is no ordinary training exercise, Izuku." [Unclear version to say 'Canon Event Approaching']
I clenched my fist slightly, my mind racing. A distortion in time? That was serious. I'd felt subtle shifts before, minor deviations from the natural flow, but if Chronos was warning me… then this wasn't something small.
"Is it something I can stop?" I asked.
"Not yet. Be vigilant. Observe."
And with that, the presence of Chronos faded, leaving me alone with my thoughts.
Something was wrong with USJ. Very wrong, and I don't think it is going to be easy.
My fingers twitched slightly as I processed Chronos's words.
Distortions in time? Unforeseen ripples?
This wasn't just a bad feeling. It was a certainty.
I had no idea what was coming, but I knew one thing for sure—USJ wouldn't be just another training exercise.
I exhaled slowly, forcing myself to relax. There was no point in looking tense now. The others were too excited about the trip to notice anything off. If I started acting strangely, I'd only raise suspicions.
No. I had to stay calm.
Observe.
Chronos's words echoed in my mind.
Not yet. Be vigilant. Observe.
I grabbed my costume from my locker and suited up.
With a final breath, I adjusted my respirator mask and stepped out.
Kirishima was already waiting by the bus, grinning ear to ear.
"Man, I'm pumped! You ready for this, Midoriya?"
I forced a smile. "Yeah. Should be… interesting."
I sat near the window, my eyes scanning the passing cityscape, but my mind was elsewhere.
Chronos had never given me a direct warning before, never.
What exactly was I supposed to be looking for?
Was it a villain attack? A structural failure? Something… worse?
Kirishima nudged me with his elbow. "Yo, you okay? You're quieter than usual."
I blinked and turned to him, schooling my features into something more relaxed. "Yeah, just thinking about the training."
Kaminari, who was leaning over his seat, smirked. "Thinking? Dude, it's rescue training, not a math test."
"Oi, dunce face, rescue work isn't just about flexing," Jiro scoffed. "You need to be able to think under pressure."
"Y-Yeah, I get that! But still, Midoriya looks like he's planning a five-step strategy just for getting off the bus!"
That got a laugh out of a few of them, but I just shook my head.
They have no idea what's coming… and I have no idea how to stop it.
Aizawa, who was sitting up front, finally spoke. "Quiet down. We'll be there in a few minutes."
The chatter died down, but I could still hear Bakugo muttering something about how rescue training was pointless. He was itching for combat, as usual.
I let my gaze drift outside again, watching as the city faded into rocky landscapes.
Then, in the distance, I saw it—the Unforeseen Simulation Joint.
A massive dome-like facility with various disaster zones designed to simulate real emergencies. Floods, landslides, collapsed buildings—this was the ultimate test of our ability to save lives.
But as we pulled up to the entrance, that strange, uneasy feeling twisted in my gut again.
The distortion Chronos warned me about…
It was already here. Or near by.
What am I supposed to do? What should I tell them?
"Kiri! Ochaco!"
I didn't even realize I'd called out to them until I saw the two of them turn toward me. The bus had just come to a stop, and everyone was getting ready to step out, but my gut was screaming at me—something was wrong.
I wasn't sure what it was yet, but the distortion was here. The moment we arrived, I felt it settle over everything, like an unseen ripple in time, warping events before they could even unfold.
"Not yet. Be vigilant. Observe."
Chronos's words echoed in my mind.
But I couldn't just stand around. If there was a distortion, I needed to find it.
"You good, Midoriya?" Kirishima asked, frowning. He must've noticed the tension in my body.
I forced a smile. "Yeah, just… stay close, alright?"
Kirishima raised a brow but grinned, slamming a fist against his palm. "Of course, man! You worried about me? That's pretty manly of you!"
Ochaco tilted her head. "Midoriya? What's up? You look a little pale."
Before I could answer, Aizawa spoke up.
"Alright, we're heading in. Don't lag behind."
That snapped everyone's focus back to the training session. The bus doors opened, and we stepped out onto the platform in front of the Unforeseen Simulation Joint.
And the moment I did—
—the world glitched.
It was only for an instant. A flicker. Barely noticeable to anyone else.
But I saw it.
