Chapter 19: Chapter 19
It was the day of the Sports Festival.
When we reached the stadium, it felt like the whole city had come to watch. Around the outside, there were food stalls, merchandise stands, people packed in like it was some kind of carnival. Everyone looked excited. No one seemed tense about villains showing up again—they clearly trusted U.A.'s security.
Inside the Class 1-A locker room.
Everyone was already buzzing. Some were stretching. A few looked disappointed they couldn't wear their full hero costumes. The room was loud with chatter and excitement.
I was near the back, sitting down, thinking about my speech. The whole country was going to be watching. Maybe even people outside Japan. I wasn't nervous, just... focused. Trying to figure out what kind of message I wanted to send.
That's when I heard Todoroki speak up.
"I don't know how you got All Might's attention," he said, calm as ever. "But I'm objectively stronger than you. And I'm going to prove it to everyone. Including him."
Eijiro stepped in before it got worse. "Hey man, it's just a competition. No need to get worked up."
Todoroki didn't even look at him. His eyes stayed locked on Midoriya. "We're not here to make friends."
Midoriya looked shaken for a second, then answered in a low, steady voice.
"You are stronger than me. But I'm not giving up."
While they were talking, Bakugo came up to me.
"Hey, Reiji. I'm gonna show everyone here I'm the strongest in class. So give everything you got so when I beat you, they'll know I earned it."
I stood up to meet his eyes.
"We'll see about that. Just don't come whining later, saying you didn't go all out."
Kaminari leaned over, muttering, "Man… what's with everyone? It's just the Sports Festival. Why are they declaring war on each other?"
No one answered. Everyone had something to prove, and their focus was locked in for the Sports Festival
Then time came. We heard our names getting announced.
We walked out through the tunnel. The sound of the crowd hit fast, growing louder with every step. They were ready.
"Here they come!" Present Mic's voice echoed over the speakers. "The first-year Hero Course—Class 1-A!"
The crowd exploded as we stepped into the sunlight.
"The new stars of U.A. High the ones who survived the villain attack and repelled them successfully! Are you guys ready to see what they're capable of?!" present mic announce
We lined up in formation as the other classes were introduced Class 1-B, the Support Course, Business Course. Audience reactions were quieter. Not the same energy as when we walked out.
"And now," Midnight announced from the center of the field, "the class representative of this year's Class 1-A… Kogane Reiji!"
Cameras turned toward me as I walked toward the podium.
I gave a pretty simple speech. Didn't try to impress anyone.
Then I stepped back and rejoined the group.
"Now that everyone's here," Present Mic said, "let the U.A. Sports Festival begin!"
"For the first round," Midnight said, holding up a remote, "we're doing a randomized activity. Let's see what you'll be competing in!"
The giant screen above the stadium cycled through the list.
It landed on:
Obstacle Course.
"Alright, everyone!" Midnight shouted. "We've got our first event Obstacle Course! Head to your positions!"
We all took our positions.
"3... 2... 1... GO!"
I shot forward the second the signal dropped, sprinting straight into the tunnel and leaving most of the others behind. I already figured how this would go.
When I glanced back, I saw Todoroki freezing the ground behind him cutting off everyone else. Bakugo was right behind him, flying low. Iida followed next, charging fast.
I picked up speed as the first obstacle came into view giant robots. The same kind they used during the entrance exam.
"Harder. Better. Faster. Stronger."
Daft Punk slid out from behind me. I gave the command.
"DRIVE! DRIVE! DRIVE!"
He tore into the robot ahead, fists slamming in rhythm. One strike after another until the whole thing collapsed, blocking the path for everyone else behind me.
"REIJI!!" Present Mic's voice blared through the speakers. "His Quirk—'Stand'—lets a separate entity fight for him! And what a move! Reiji's cleared the first obstacle without even breaking a sweat! What style!"
Todoroki was next, freezing a path and skating forward while locking down more robots in ice. They stalled a moment—then started breaking free and attacking anyone nearby.
Bakugo wasn't just charging in blindly. He must've realized destroying the robots would help everyone behind him, so instead, he blasted over the whole line of them. Smart. The rest of the class looked like they were starting to coordinate using teamwork to get past the machines.
I kept moving. I'd reached the second obstacle—the canyon zone.
Pillars and rope bridges strung across a drop.
I stopped for a moment and tried to channel Hamon to my legs, like when I'd practiced running on trees.
Focused on sticking my footing to the rope. Then picked up speed, step by step, pushing to increase my pace as I ran through the obstacle.
After crossing, I looked back and spotted Todoroki just reaching the second obstacle.
He hadn't even started crossing yet. The rest of them weren't even in view.
then I kept moving forward.
Next came the third obstacle—a minefield.
I sent Daft Punk ahead and had him hurl a heavy chunk of rock across the field.
BOOM.
Mines detonated in the distance.
I Watched how it blew. from explosion they were non lethal it Just throw you off balance or send you flying. That made sense. U.A. wasn't trying to kill anyone out here.
I could've run straight through. I could take the hit.
But I had a better idea. One that wouldn't mess up my clothes.
I pointed forward. "Daft Punk. Run in a path where there's no mines."
As Daft Punk ran ahead, I followed his trail—step by step. Not one mine went off. Within a minute, I'd cleared the minefield.
"WHAT is Reiji doing?!" Present Mic shouted. "He hasn't triggered a single mine! His spatial awareness and foot coordination are off the charts!"
Aizawa's voice cut in flatly. "He's using his Stand. Look closely. You'll see footprints in the sand ahead of him. He's reading them and following step by step."
"Man, Reiji is walking through this obstacle like it's nothing! Like it's a damn park stroll! Hasn't slowed down once!" Present Mic yelled. "This kid's showing us why he's Class 1-A's rep!"
Todoroki thought, 'Reiji already reached the finish line? How did he cross the minefield that fast? I had the advantage through all the obstacles… so how did he get ahead?'
As Todoroki tried to cross the minefield carefully, it slowed him down. Now everyone was catching up to him.
I glanced up at the screen.
Todoroki was halfway through. Most of the others had started crossing the minefield too. Except Midoriya.
He hadn't moved. What was he waiting for?
I didn't get long to wonder. A loud explosion rocked the field.
Midoriya came flying into view launched by a mine blast. He'd cleared half the field in one shot and landed hard, right next to Todoroki and Bakugo.
Now all three of them were neck and neck, trying to outpace each other.
Todoroki tried the same trick as before ice slicking under Midoriya's feet. Bakugo stayed in the air, dodging past the frozen patches. Midoriya got caught for a second, stuck halfway.
But he forced his way out. Broke through the ice, stumbled forward.
Todoroki hit the finish line first.
Bakugo was right behind him.
Then Midoriya.
Then the rest.
