Micro Tyrant: I’m Just an Ant but I Keep Evolving

Chapter 5: Chapter 5: Blood in the Tunnel

The acid had barely dried on the tunnel walls when I heard it—a deep, pulsing thud that didn't belong to any ant.

At first, I thought it was a shift in the earth. Then it came again.

Thud. Thud. Crunch.

It wasn't a collapse.It was steps.

Slow. Heavy. Dragging something.

I pressed my body flat against the tunnel's curve, silencing my breath, tucking my antennae close.

[Appraisal Lv.1 – Active]

[??? – Unknown Presence Detected]Biological Class: InsectaSize Estimate: Medium-LargeTemperament: Aggressive

Warning: Threat Level Unknown

That's all it gave me. No level. No stats.

Useless.

I focused my antennae forward and extended my hearing.

The scraping was rhythmic, scraping against stone in uneven beats. And then—a scent.

Rot. Iron. Blood.

Not ant blood. Meat blood.

Then I saw it.

The thing lumbered into view from the shadows of the passage ahead. Broad. Thick. A carapace like midnight obsidian with ridges like armor plates. Jagged horn curved from its head like a siege weapon.

And then I got the name:

[Target Identified: Horned Burrow Beetle]Species: Scarabaeidae MutatusThreat Level: Moderate-High

Warning: This predator is known to hunt tunneling species.

I swallowed my fear. Then—

It turned toward the faintest acid scent I'd left behind and charged.

It moved fast—way faster than something that size should.

My legs screamed as I scrambled backward into the upper tunnel, the walls quaking behind me as the beetle rammed through the narrow bend like it was made of thunder and rage.

Think! You're weaker. Slower. But you have tools now.

I stopped just beyond a patch of moss that had been growing good for oxygen. The ground there was softer.

A trap.

I turned and stood my ground.

The beetle came thundering forward.

Three… two… now!

[Acid Spit Lv.1 – Activated]

A stream of pale green hissing fluid shot from my mandibles, hitting the moss-covered ground just ahead of the beetle.

SsssSSSSHHH—

The floor melted into a shallow pit—just deep enough to throw off balance.

The beetle slammed into the dip—wobbling.

I moved.

Scrambled up the wall. Launched myself off a rock ledge.

Landed on its back.

Its horn scraped the tunnel roof trying to reach me.

I fired another spit, aiming at a soft-looking joint between its head and thorax.

HISS—

It barely etched the surface. Too shallow. The armor was thick.

[Acid Spit Lv.1 – Proficiency +1%][Target Resistance: High]

Shit. It had acid resistance.

Then—

[Appraisal Skill Levelled Up!]

[Appraisal Lv.2 Unlocked]New Functions:• Combat Profile Analysis• Level & HP Detection• Skill Recognition (Partial)

Finally!

[Appraisal Lv.2 – Target: Horned Burrow Beetle]

Level: 12HP: 64/85MP: 4/10

Skills:• Horn Charge (Lv.3)• Tunnel Sense (Lv.2)• Armor Plating (Lv.2)

Weaknesses: Underbelly (Minor), Visual Distraction

Threat Rating: High

I was Level 3 at best. This thing could rip me in half.

Unless I got creative.

I jumped backward just as it reared up. Dust exploded into the air as its horn speared the wall where I had just been.

I ran again—leading it toward a curve with a cluster of unstable rocks.

Behind me, it roared.

Yes—roared.

Then I saw it in my mind: The rebel's last stand. Using terrain. Traps. Speed over strength.

I don't need to kill it.I just need to kill it here.

I skittered up a vertical shaft, waited for it to chase—

Then I spat again.

[Acid Spit Lv.1 – Activated]

This time, I aimed at the ceiling.

The rocks above hissed and crumbled.

The moment the beetle stomped beneath it—

CRASH.

Half the shaft caved in. A dozen stones smashed down onto its back.

It shrieked, legs buckling. I pounced again.

This time, I jammed my mandibles under its leg plate and fired directly into its joint socket.

HISS—

The hiss became a scream.

Its HP dropped rapidly.

HP: 64 → 50 → 42 → 35...

Then: it rolled.

I was flung against the wall. My carapace cracked.

[HP: 9/17]

I stood.

Shaking.

Bleeding. (Do ants have blood?)

But alive.

The beetle tried to rise—its front leg crippled, one eye melted.

I charged, ducked beneath its raised horn, and unleashed everything I had—

[Acid Spit Lv.1 – OVERCHARGE!]Emergency use. MP critical.

The stream hit the underbelly.

Direct.

Burned through.

It stopped moving.

[Enemy Defeated: Horned Burrow Beetle (Lv.12)]XP Gained: +82

[Level Up! You are now Level 4]

[Skill Rank Increased: Acid Spit Lv.2 Unlocked]

[Trait Growth Detected: Evolution Option Pending]

The corpse steamed beneath me.

The Horned Burrow Beetle was massive even in death—twice my size, its horn still twitching from post-mortem nerve surges. But it no longer terrified me.

Because now, it was mine.

I leaned in and took the first bite.

[You have consumed: Horned Burrow Beetle (Lv.12)][Analyzing Biomass…]

New trait fragment detected: "Armor Plating (Lv.1)"

Skill potential unlocked: "Horn Charge" — incompatible.

Compatible adaptation found:→ [Trait: Carapace Density +1]→ [Skill Synergy: Acid Spit Efficiency +4%]

So I wouldn't grow a horn… but my acid would hit harder, and my shell would toughen.

Good.

I'd take every advantage I could scavenge.

I finished feeding, dragged what remains I could into a crevice, then sealed the area with loose stone and moss. No pheromonal trace, no witness. If the Hive found the body, the queen might ask questions.

And I wasn't ready to answer them.

Not yet.

Later that cycle, I retreated to my hidden tunnel and meditated on the fight.

Adrenaline still surged through my body. My limbs twitched in memory of that moment when my acid had finally burned through.

[Skill: Appraisal Lv.2 – Available]

You may now scan combatants for:

• Level

• HP/MP

• Known Skills

• Partial Resistances

Additional unlocked functionality:

• Combat Log (Self only)• Evolution Path Hints (requires biological threshold)

I tested it.

First on a nearby tunnel fly. Then a foraging grub. Then… on myself.

[Appraisal – Target: Self]

Evolution Path Hint: [Seeker Drone] → [Abyssal Forager] (Locked)

Requirements to unlock path:

• Survival in hostile tunnel zones• Kill count threshold: 3/7• Magic Awakening: 0/1• Trait Mutation: 1/2

Abyssal Forager?

I had no idea what that meant. But it sounded dangerous. Powerful.

And very, very un-Queen-like.

The next few cycles were… tense.

I kept working the larvae nursery during my surface hours, same as always. Obedient. Silent. Pheromone-clean.

But I'd changed.

Even the Hive's scent fields felt duller to me now. Their voices in my head—commands, conditioning—they still echoed, but I could push them aside easier.

It was like the beetle's blood was still burning inside me. Fueling something raw.

Something independent.

And the others… they noticed.

Not directly. Not consciously.

But the way they twitched near me. How their antennae flicked faster when I passed. How even a soldier ant paused slightly when our paths crossed.

[Pheromone Divergence: 2%][Warning: Camouflage integrity degrading. Simulate Hive Compliance Soon.]

I had to move faster.

Before they realized.

I was dreaming.

Except ants don't dream.

But I was there—in the dark, beneath the Hive, in a buried nest filled with broken memories and fragments of thought-pheromones.

And a voice spoke.

Not with sound. Not even with scent.

But through me.

"You have tasted death… and survived.""You have eaten the flesh of a killer… and adapted.""You are ready to choose."

Then I saw them—three shadows. Silhouettes of myself, twisted and different.

One was lithe and sharp-eyed, dripping venom.

One was armored, horned, burning with red mana.

One… was shadowed, with wings of smoke and jaws that opened the ground itself.

Then they shattered.

I woke up panting, mandibles twitching.

The System chimed:

[Evolution Options: Fragmented Paths Detected]

Requirements not yet met. Continue growth.

Next Tier: Level 7+, Unique Trait x2, First Magic Skill Unlocked.

I needed to grow.Fast.

And if the Hive stood in my way… I'd dig through them too.
