Chapter 99: Underlying Turbulence Among the Upper Echelons
"Prin!"
Audrey, while running, flipped her body to dodge the micro rocket whizzing past her. The side of her body transformed into a misty haze, swallowing the incoming bullets, as she flipped again and approached the firing Autonomous Unit from one side.
"Got it."
Behind her, due to the time frame Audrey managed to create, Prin aimed the hefty launcher at the distant, towering Autonomous Unit. After a tense three seconds of lock and fire, a rocket shot out from the launcher, blazing a trail toward the heavily-armored Autonomous Unit and explosively detonating.
Amidst a burst of flames, the six-meter-tall large Autonomous Unit, engulfed in fire that burnt through its internal structure, gradually collapsed. With the defense line broken, the two swiftly charged into the building, continually firing and clearing the smaller Autonomous Units within, gradually approaching the tiny dot on the 3D map.
"We're almost at the main control center, 2 minutes and 54 seconds remain. We must cut the power before the High Rank AI activates the self-destruct program."
"OK."
With their backs against each other, they kept clearing the approaching smaller Autonomous Units, then flipped through a shattered window, under the cover of mist, demolishing small defensive machine guns along the path.
Two minutes later, with a sudden clatter, the lights in the entire building dimmed, and all defense equipment powered down instantly. The Autonomous Units that had been pursuing them became headless flies, without the main control AI's command, aimlessly wandering or patrolling in place.
"Not bad, Audrey and Prin passed the exam." Yarnasha applauded gently in the observation hall, then turned around to look at four teenage girls seated in the audience.
Since this Iron Blood Faction Songstress senior took over the training of the six, two months had passed. Throughout these two months of special training, although these girls might not be the military's benchmark elite soldiers, they at least became competent and skilled fighters, gaining insights into the use of various weapons, common assassination ambush tactics, and dangerous traps.
"Later, Ores and Shui Yianqing will pair up, Hexia and Blanchi another group, for their assessment."
"Understood." Although there was a bit of annoyance between Ores and Shui Yianqing, there were no protests or squabbles this time.
Then, the two left the observation hall, heading to the assessment location, leaving Hexia and Blanchi to continue watching.
Soon, the projection screen displayed the fight between Ores and Shui Yianqing.
Upon infiltrating the enemy Autonomous Units' base, Shui Yianqing waved her hand, causing streams of water to gather like a concave lens, bending light while deflecting aiming bullets in their sight.
This condition only lasted for two seconds. Soon, chips embedded in the Autonomous Units adjusted the projectiles based on light refraction, again targeting the duo.
At this moment, Ores took over. Her eyes flashed silver, turning the circulating water concave lens into Ice Crystals, blocking the incoming bullets, buying a few more seconds for the pair to rush through the hazardous open terrain.
Upon nearing the building, utilizing various covers, the two commenced pinpoint elimination of defensive machine guns along the way, splitting into two directions to find their target.
Even though they sustained minor injuries during the fight, their experience helped them treat the wound with emergency healing spray, and after simple bandaging, quickly returned to the battlefield.
About ten minutes later, an explosion ripped open the top of the building, while amidst flying debris and flames, the two leapt from the top, avoiding falling objects, and finally hit the ground.
"Phew—" Ores spat the inhaled smoke dust from her mouth and wiped her cheeks with the relatively clean part of her arm.
"That was reckless."
She initially intended to end the exam gracefully and cleanly but was thwarted by Shui Yianqing abruptly blowing the target up at the last moment.
"That was the only way to complete it before the time ran out, I was left with no choice." Shui Yianqing walked over and laughed at the soot-covered face of Ores.
"You actually laughed." Ores was somewhat irritated, especially considering her perfect image now looked like an embarrassingly dirty chicken in a mud pond, making her a bit ashamed and angry.
"Alright, alright, I'm not laughing at you anymore. Look, I didn't fare any better." Shui Yianqing showcased her mud-splattered and singed hair, the long, beautiful sea-blue hair having a scorched trace at one end, which was somewhat regrettable.
"Hmph." Seeing this, Ores was slightly pacified.
Subsequently, the two slowly stood up, deciding to bathe first, lest they were unwilling to face anyone.
After these two completed their assessment, Hexia and Blanchi took their turn. They stood up, proceeding to the prepping room nearby to change into combat attire, carrying matching weapons, and entered the designated location.
"Do you really want me to use this, Tilan?" Blanchi glanced at her sturdy bulletproof armor and the accompanying exoskeleton with twin heavy cylindrical machine guns.
"That's right, just support me from the back." Blanchi had the lowest Transcendent power among them. If she were to join the front-line raid, it would likely detract her attention, so having her wear thick armor for backline support was more convenient.
"Alright." Blanchi obediently complied without much fuss.
Then the two arrived at the assessment building front. As soon as they approached, machine guns mounted outside the building opened fire, causing Blanchi to panic and try to escape, but Hexia reassured her.
"Don't worry, this firepower can't penetrate your exoskeleton armor."
